Thursday Night Music - The Movies - 12/14/06
Download a rather haunting version of “Silent Night” from Brandon Curtis of the Secret Machines
The Movies / Happy Hollows @ the Mountain Bar ($8) – I’m not the biggest fan of hanging in Chinatown, but The Movies might make me reconsider. They’re one of the best local bands and Timothy James always puts on a performance. I gave a friend some advice the other day, “You need to put the rock in the slingshot.” It pretty much works in any context. Download “Rock in the Slingshot” and “Timothy James” I respect any non-rapper who writes an anthem about himself. A lot of your favorite local musicians are really into Happy Hollows right now, but I still haven’t seen them.
Peter and the Wolf @ the Echo ($5) – For people who like to get rocked to sleep. Pitchfork and that Gorilla vs. Bear blog are huge supporters of this guy. The Rock Insider ranked it #13 on her top 25 list. The song “Lightness” is apparently homage to one of my favorite novels, Kundera’s Unbearable Lightness of Being. These tracks sound pretty good, but a bit depressing? No? Download “Safe Travels” and “Lightness” If you can’t make it out tonight, see them at the Silverlake Lounge on January 10th.
The Submarines / Great Northern @ Pershing Square (Free but you have to pay to skate) – It’s a very cool idea, go ice skating downtown and listen to some quality local music.
The Bronx / Riverboat Gamblers @ the Key Club (Sold Out) – Quality loud punk-ish rock ‘n’ roll.
Drakkar Suana @ Silverlake Lounge ($8) – They’re from my college town of Lawrence, KS but I first encountered them out here. They played my friend Travis Millard’s art opening at the Jeff Electric Gallery in Silver Lake. The Pitch (Kansas City’s weekly) called them Seals & Croft on airplane glue. I can just read their song titles and start laughing. I think my favorite is, “There’s Not Enough Tits on a Wolf.” Download “There Is No Boon For Which We Do Not Render Service” and “Very Much Alone, Pt. 4 – O, Fuck, I’m Fucked. Fuck” If you can’t see them tonight, join me at Sea Level in Echo Park at 4:00PM on Saturday.
Bodies of Water / Kind Hearts & Coronets @ Spaceland
