New Music Releases: February 22, 2011

Unfortunately I haven't gotten too deep into any of these releases yet. A few of them sound promising though...

Releases That Got My Attention:
Adele: 21 (Columbia) – The winner of 2009’s Grammy for best new artist releases her second album. At the Palladium on 6/9/11. Listen HERE
Julianna Barwick: The Magic Place (Asthmatic Kitty) – For fans of pretty, ethereal, vocal records.
Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy & Cairo Gang: Island Brothers (Drag City) – Latest 10” single.
The Caribbean: Discontinued Perfume (Hometapes) – Sixth album from the indie rockers.
Johnny Cash: Bootleg Volume 2 – From Memphis to Hollywood (Sony Legacy) – 57-track collection with 16 never issued recordings, 11 singles, 11 outtakes. Listen HERE
The Cave Singers: No Witch (Jagjaguwar) – Third record from the “rustic” “backwoods” bluesy band with the singer with the love it or hate it voice. At the Autry on 3/13/11. Listen HERE
Danielson: Best of Gloucester County (Sounds Familyre) – It’s been five years since Ships. This one features guest appearances from Jens Lekman and Sufjan Stevens. At the Satellite on 4/9/11.
David Dondero: A Pre-Existing Condition (Ghostmeat) – Some originals and lots of covers (including Little Feat, Charlie Pride, Neil Young, Doug Sahm, Dylan and Jawbreaker).
Eagle and Talon: In Manila (Bi/Akka) – Local band alert
Earth: Angels of Darkness Demons of Light 1 (Southern Lord) – One of the more critically adored heavy bands. Getting good reviews.
The Flying Burrito Brothers: Authorized Bootleg – Fillmore East 11/7/70 (Hip-O) – I haven’t listened to this yet, but this is post Gram Parsons.  It’s still a prime band and they play all the songs you’d want to hear.
Gil-Scott Heron & Jamie xx: We’re New Here (XL Recordings) – Jamie from the xx reworks Gil-Scott Heron’s I’m New Here record. Interesting idea to put these two artists together.
Light Asylum: In Tension (self-released) – New York critical darlings. Cold, steely, Depeche Mode meets Ian Curtis (P.S. that’s a woman singing).
MP3: Dark Allies (via Pitchfork)
Loch Lomond: Little Me Will Start A Storm (Tender Loving) – Folk influenced indie music from Portland.
The Low Anthem: Smart Flesh (Nonesuch) – Americana fans take note. At the Autry on 5/9/11.
The Luyas: Too Beautiful To Work (Dead Oceans) – I try to listen to everything on the Dead Oceans label (but haven’t gotten around to this yet). Tied in with the Montreal scene (Owen Pallett, Sarah Neufeld and Bell Orchestre help out).  At the Autry on 3/23/11.
Malachai: Return To the Ugly Side (Domino) – Eclectic Bristol duo touches on pretty much ever genre. Geoff Barrow Listen HERE
Medication: Judgment Day EP (Sacred Bones) – Lo-fi indie rock mang.
Brad Mehldau: Live In Marciac (Nonesuch) – Local jazz pianist does original material and covers Nick Drake, Radiohead, Nirvana and The Beatles.  At Largo on 4/14/11.
Dustin O’Halloran: Lumiere (Fat Cat) – You like Devics?
The Psychic Paramount: II (No Quarter) – Experimental New York band with the drummer from one of my favorite college bands, Panel Donor. Haven’t heard it yet.
Puro Instinct: Headbangers In Ecstasy (Mexican Summer) – Local sisters. Gorilla vs. Bear loves this. The cover is like the American Apparel of album covers.
Sister Crayon: Bellow (Manimal) – Female fronted group with a Portishead meets CocoRosie vibe.
Six Organs of Admittance: Asleep On the Floodplain (Drag City) – Some groovy acoustic guitar playing (as usual).
Slug Guts: Howling Gang (Sacred Bones) – Aussies with a bit of a Birthday/Mudhoney vibe.
Toro Y Moi: Underneath the Pine (Carpark) – Best new music on Pitchfork (if that sorta thing impress ye). Expands on his chillwave sound, but still not my bag baby. At the Troubadour on 3/23/11.

Ticket Giveaway: Sebadoh and Quasi at the Echoplex

The gifts keep on coming.. I've got a couple of pairs of tickets to give away for the Sebadoh and Quasi show that's going down this Friday (February 25, 2011) at the Echoplex in Echo Park. Sebadoh's calling their tour "The Bakesale/Harmacy Remembering Time Tour" which is pretty incredible since those are my two favorite Sebadoh records. Not coincidentally, both of those records will be reissued/expanded later this year on Sub Pop. The band for this tour consists of Lou Barlow, Jason Loewenstein and Bob D'Amico.

Opening the show will be Quasi. I haven't seen Quasi for a really long time (maybe not since they toured as Elliott Smith's backing band). They've been a trio for the last five years and feature: Sam Coomes, Janet Weiss and Joanna Bolme. Janet and Joanna are also in Stephen Malkmus' backing band, the Jicks.

To win these tickets, email me [dukeufo at gmail] with the name of your favorite character from The Wire. Please put "Sebadoh Contest" in the subject line. The contest closes Friday at Noon.

Ticket Giveaway: Telekinesis & The Love Language

I've got a couple of pairs of tickets to give away to see Telekinesis and The Love Language show this Thursday at the Echo. Opening the show will be One Trick Pony. As I mentioned last week, I'm really enjoying the new Telekinesis record.

To win these tickets, email me [dukeufo at gmail] with the name of your pick for Best Picture at this Sunday's Academy Awards ceremony. Please put "Telekinesis Contest" in the subject line of the email. The contest closes Thursday at Noon.

New Music Releases: February 15, 2011

So much music to try to keep up with this week. I'm starting to remember why I stopped doing these posts....

Pick of the Week:
Telekinesis: 12 Desperate Straight Lines (Merge) – With this record, Telekinesis should cross over to snag Death Cab For Cutie’s audience. Produced by DCFC’s Chris Walla, it’s very well done breakup indie rock with a bit of punch. While I did like their first album, I’m surprised how much I like this new one. At the Echo on 2/24/11. Aquarium Drunkard has a free download HERE.
Other Recommended Releases:
Arbouretum: Gathering (Thrill Jockey) – You’ve got to be open to stoner rock to appreciate this one. Slow, dense riffs with an almost pastoral quality. Cool shit in my book. At the Satellite on 3/1/11.
PJ Harvey: Let England Shake (Vagrant) – This record’s full of anti-war songs, complex arrangements and dramatic singing. Some of it’s pretty accessible and a lot of it’s challenging.  Harvey’s releases are always interesting listens. This one should please her fans. At Coachella on 4/17/11. Listen HERE
Mogwai: Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will (Sub Pop) – They brought back the vocals. Plenty for heavy post-rock fans to be happy about. At the Mayan on 5/10/11. Listen HERE
Yuck: Yuck (Fat Possum) – I saw them live before listening to the record, which made me give them the benefit of the doubt. Really good live show, pretty good album (maybe too many ballads?). Live, they’re sort of like a young, British version of Dinosaur Jr. (circa 1991). At the Echo on 4/13/11 and The Satellite on 4/14/11. Listen HERE
Other Releases That Got My Attention:
Asobi Seksu: Flourescence (Polyvinyl) – Dream poppers; The vinyl is pink. At the Troubadour on 3/9/11. Listen HERE
The Babies: The Babies (Shrimper) – Kevin Morby (bass player in Woods) and Cassie Ramone (guitar in Vivian Girls) play damaged pop. The vinyl doesn’t come out until late March.
Beans: End It All (Anticon) – Ex-Anti Pop Consortium
Bright Eyes: The People’s Key (Saddle Creek) – I’ve never gotten into Connor Oberst or Bright Eyes, so I don’t have much to say. At the Fox in Pomona on 4/13/11 and Coachella on 4/16/11 Listen HERE
Hayes Carll: KMAG YOYO (Lost Highway) – The first time I saw Carll was back to back with Ryan Bingham, and I just preferred Bingham. But I haven’t heard this record yet.
The Dears: Degeneration Street (Dangerbird) – The Montreal collective’s second album for local label, Dangerbird. At the Troubadour on 3/10/11. Listen HERE

Peaking Lights: 936 (Not Not Fun) – Weirdo guitar synth psych dub music.
The Skull Defekts: Peer Amid (Thrill Jockey) – Daniel Higgs from Lungfish joined these Swedes. It’s a weird, experimental rock record. Still digesting this one..
Sonic Youth: Simon Werner a Disparu (SYR) – Instrumental album that grew out of recording the soundtrack to a French film Simon Werner a Disparu (known as Lights Out in the US). I haven’t heard it, but it’s getting good reviews (critics are saying it’s atmospheric and experimental).

Ticket Giveaway: Lucero at the Echoplex on Thursday

I've got a couple of pairs of tickets to give away to see Lucero and Olin and the Moon this Thursday (February 17th) at the Echoplex. Lucero's got one of the most intensely dedicated fanbases. For the uninitiated (I guess some people still hadn't heard of Arcade Fire before last night) think gruff, slightly twangy heavy drinking rock'n'roll.

To win these tickets email me [dukeufo at gmail] with the name of your favorite Lucero record. The contest closes at 6:00 PM on Wednesday. Winners will be notified by Noon on Thursday. Please put "Lucero Tickets" in the subject line.

Live Music Options: 2/14/11 - 2/20/11
