We're getting to that weird pre-Christmas, slow release schedule. Mostly reissues and major pop releases this time of the year. While the music snobs are most interested in the new Love Is All record, I will once again recommend The Henry Clay People (which came out nationally last week). I'm pretty afraifd of The Flaming Lips' Christmas On Mars....
New Music Releases 11/11/08:

The Henry Clay People: For Cheap or For Free (Autumn Tone) – Read my review of this record from 10/3/08. I totally slept on the fact that it came out last week. It’s one of my most listened to records of the year. Recommended.

New Music Releases - 11/4/08
Records I’ve Heard:
Lou Reed: Berlin – Live at St. Ann’s (Matador) – This is from the 2006 string of concerts that were filmed by Julian Schnabel and released on DVD. The DVD is still sitting on top of my DVD waiting to be watched. Berlin was the follow-up to Reed’s excellent album, Transformer. Apparently it flopped both commercially and with the critics. Some of these songs have been performed over the years, but this was the first time they were performed in their entirety. Both the studio and live document are pretty depressing records, but they’re definitely worth a listen for the fans. Antony from Antony and the Johnsons makes a guest appearance on “Candy Says.”
Local Releases:
Crystal Antlers: EP (Touch & Go) – Vinyl version
Eulogies: Tempted to Do Nothing EP (Dangerbird) – Vinyl version. Featuring a duet with Nikki from SSPU
Little Joy: Little Joy (Rough Trade) – This is the much blogged about new album from Strokes’ drummer Fab Morretti, girlfriend/singer Binki Shapiro and singer/guitarist Rodrigo Amarante (from Brazilian band, Los Hermanos). I might not go as far as calling it essential listening, but it’s pretty good. The more upbeat tunes sound like the Strokes on vacation in Brazil in the early 1960s. While the tracks with Binki singing don’t sound like that at all. They’re named after the dive bar in Echo Park. Live at the Troubadour on 12/7/08
Megapuss: Surfing (Vapor) – The joke-y side project from Devendra Banhart and Gregory Rogove from Priestbird. The only track I’ve listened to “Adam and Steve” steals a guitar lick from Wham and mentions a “tropical taint.”
Other Noteworthy Releases:

New Music Releases - 10/28/08

Of what I’ve heard, the School of Seven Bells is my favorite. But the music snobs are loving the new Deerhunter. I haven’t listened to the whole thing yet, but what I’ve heard sounds like a big progression over the hit-or-miss Cryptograms. Crystal Stilts and Cause Co-Motion! are turning on the indie snobs too.
New Music Releases 10/28/08
Records I’ve Heard:
Ryan Adams & the Cardinals: Cardinology (Lost Highway) – I’m still a big fan of Adams’ Heartbreaker. This one’s pretty cohesive but felt a little too mid-tempo and polished to really move me. It’s getting pretty good reviews though, so fans should give it a listen. At the Staples Center on 12/4/08
It’s a Musical: Music Makes Me Sick (Morr Music) – Guitar-less indie pop from Berlin (but sung in English of course). The All Music Guide compares it to early Mates of State, but it’s not quite that manic.
MP3: Bad Day
O’Death: Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin (Kemado) – The give themselves that goth/country/punk label. File them in that ever expanding category of bands with pretty good music, but with a singer that I can’t listen to. At Spaceland on 11/22/08
MP3: Lowtide
School of Seven Bells: Alpinisms (Ghostly) – Dream-pop that’s rooted in classic 4AD with propulsive electronic beats, hints of kraut rock and a Middle Eastern vibe. It’s accomplished and cohesive and recommended if you’re into that sort of thing at all. The band features Ben Curtis (ex-Secret Machines) and the Deheza sisters (ex-On!Air!Library!). At the Fonda on 11/29/08
MP3: Connjur
Local Releases:
The 88: Not Only…But Also (Island) – They got the major label makeover – parted ways with early members, ditched the business suits, got haircuts and hired very expensive producers (Babyface and Matt Wallace). I haven’t heard it yet, so I don’t know if it’s an improvement or not. At Club Nokia on 11/16/08
Other Noteworthy Releases:
Dave Alvin – Best of – At Largo on 11/8/08
Bloc Party – At Club Nokia on 12/10/08
Cause Co-Motion! – singles and EPs

Juliette Commagere
Ry Cooder – anthology

New Music Releases 10/21/08
Paris put me way behind on writing. And since most of these records came via digital copies from the publicists, and since my computer crapped out on me (thanks Mac!) after I downloaded them, I haven’t really spent a lot of time with any of these releases yet….but here’s some information. Take it for what it’s worth (very little). Parts & Labor and The Sea and Cake are my picks for the week.
New Music Releases 10/21/08:
Records I’ve Heard:
AC/DC: Black Ice (Columbia) – Starts off decently, but then drags on way too long (does the world really need a 56 minute AC/DC album?). It brings back memories of cruising my home town in my buddy’s CRX with the “Thunderstruck” blaring. I still prefer Bon Scott era. The Wal-Mart exclusive paid off for them with over 800k sold in the first week. See them at the Forum on 12/6/08 and 12/8/08
Brother JT3: Jelly Roll Gospel (Drag City) – I haven’t spent much time with this yet, but it’s the acid/psych rock version of Brother JT. Hard to believe he’s been doing it since the mid-1980s. It’s vinyl only and limited to 500 copies
Cornelius: Sensuous / Sensurround (Cherry Red) – Deluxe CD/DVD version of the album. I honestly haven’t had a chance to look at the DVD yet, but I enjoy most everything Cornelius does.
The Dears: Missiles (Dangerbird) – This is the first Dears record I’ve listened to (and the first for LA’s Dangerbird Records), so I can’t be much of a judge. All I can say is that it’s easy to listen to, but ultimately a little bit dull.
Parts & Labor: Receivers (Jagjaguwar) – This is my first time listening to Parts & Labor too. I’ve only listened to this once, but so far I’m impressed. It’s on the listenable side of noise rock. They do interesting things with electronic feedback, but still write songs. Recommended for fans of the more noisy side of indie rock. At the Smell on 11/3/08. MP3: Nowheres Nigh
Pit Er Pat: High Time (Thrill Jockey) – Chicago post-rock. This is one of those bands (like Deerhoof) that I’d probably like better if they were instrumental. I just can’t take the singing at all. At the Smell on 11/8/08. MP3: Evacuation Days
The Sea and Cake: Car Alarm (Thrill Jockey) – I still love their first three albums the best, but this is a welcome return to form after the disappointing Everybody. If you’re new to the band, you might want to pick up their first album first, but long time fans shouldn’t hesitate to buy this. At the Troubadour on 12/3/08 & 12/4/08 MP3: Car Alarm
Local Interest:
The Whispertown 2000: Swim (Acony Records) – I haven’t gotten through this one yet. At the Echo on 11/2/08. MP3: Done with Love
Other Noteworthy Releases:
+ / - - MP3: Snowblind

New Music Releases: 10/14/08
Secret Machines: Secret Machines (TSM Records) – This is the band’s first release since guitarist Ben Curtis was replaced by ex-Tripping Daisy guitarist Phil Karnats. The change is pretty subtle. The kraut rock influences might be toned down a little and the classic rock ‘n’ roll influences are dialed up a bit? Josh Garza’s bombastic drums have always kind of made the band for me. They have one long jam during the third track, “Have I Run Out,” but save most of it for the 11 minute closing track, “The Fire Is Waiting.” I'm digging it more than their last record and it got a good review from Pitchfork today too. If you’re not going to Neil Young, make sure to catch them at the Key Club on 10/30/08. For all that talk about how loud those My Bloody Valentine shows were at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Secret Machines were a lot louder the last time I saw them at the Viper Room.
MP3: Atomic Heels

Townes Van Zandt: Delta Momma Blues (Fat Possum) – Vinyl reissue

New Music Releases: 10/7/08
Records I’ve Heard:
Catfish Haven: Devastator (Secretly Canadian) – These guys (from Chicago actually) play soulful, rough around the edges rock ‘n’ roll that’s a close cousin to LA’s High Society. It’s a good party record and I imagine they’re a great band to see in a bar.
MP3: Set in Stone
MP3: Devastator
Deerhoof: Offend Maggie (Kill Rock Stars) – I like the music, but as soon as lead singer Satomi Matsuzaki starts singing, I lose all interest. It’s getting really good reviews though, so I’m sure fans will dig it. At the Echoplex on 11/14/08
MP3: Offend Maggie
Department of Eagles: In Ear Park (4AD) – This was Daniel Rossen’s band before he joined Grizzly Bear. The album’s four years in the works and features heavy contributions from Chris Taylor and Chris Bear of Grizzly Bear. It’s an ambitious, interesting record that should be right up my alley (just like Grizzly Bear for that matter), but I just don’t connect with it. It reminds me of Van Dyke Park’s Song Cycle (which I also appreciate without connecting with).
MP3: No One Does It Like You Do
El Guincho: Alegranza (XL Recordings/Beggars) – Hailed as Spain’s answer to Panda Bear, El Guincho has gotten mad praise from blogs like Gorilla vs. Bear. It’s got that tribal sound that’s au courant. It reminds me a little bit of the Avalanches too. I find the songs maddeningly repetitive, but it’s worth a listen. At the Echo on 11/20/08
Fucked Up: Chemistry of Common Life (Matador) – Pissed off hardcore that’s all about confronting the listener.
MP3: Twice Born
MP3: No Epiphany
Jay Reatard: Matador Singles ‘08 (Matador) – A collection of all the 7” singles he’s released throughout the year on Matador. Reatard’s a little bit of a chameleon in terms of musical style. He’s usually lumped into the punk category, but the album goes from having a 1950s rock ‘n’ roll vibe all the way to a 1980s Australian sound. And when I saw him live, it bordered on punk-metal. There are enough good songs here to make it an interesting listen. RECOMMENDED
MP3: See-Saw
MP3: Always Wanting More
Lambchop: OH ohio (Merge) – Lambchop’s another band where I like the music, but have a hard time getting over the lead singer’s voice. But if you like well constructed, chamber pop style songs (like I tend to), you should give it a listen.
MP3: National Talk Like a Pirate Day
Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s: Animal! (Epic)
Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s: Not Animal (Epic) – After signing to a major, the band got into a pissing contest over this record. Animal! is the record the band wants you to hear. You can only get it on vinyl right now. Not Animal is the record the label wants you to hear. It’s available on CD as well. I haven’t had a chance to spend much time with either one yet but I’ll let you know when I do.
The Rosebuds: Life Like (Merge) – I honestly wasn’t too familiar with the Rosebuds before this release, so I’m happy the label sent it to me. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a sucker for indie rock with mostly upbeat music and totally dark lyrics. At the Echo on 11/25/08; RECOMMENDED
MP3: Life Like
Marnie Stern: This Is It & I Am It & You Are It & So Is That & He Is It & It Is It & That Is That (Kill Rock Stars) – Stern’s once again joined by Hella’s crazy ass drummer, Zach Hill. When you listen to this, it makes you feel like your head’s going to explode. Normally I don’t go for this sort of noise, but I always find Hill’s drumming compelling. Recommended for fans of the more extreme, experimental side of indie rock. At El Rey on 11/15/08
MP3: Transformer
Local Releases:
Crystal Antlers: EP (Touch & Go) – Pitchfork awarded their debut EP the coveted, “Best New Music” tag, which helped them sell over 3,000 copies direct to their fans via Myspace. Touch & Go signed them and is now re-releasing the EP. It’s got garage, psych and hardcore elements. It’s a promising set of songs.
MP3: A Thousand Eyes
The Little Ones: Morning Tide (Chop Shop) – The Little Ones debut EP was at the top of my list of local releases in 2006. Two years later, and now signed to music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas’ label, the guys finally release their debut full length. There’s nothing quite as catchy as “Lovers Who Uncover” but there are plenty of really catchy songs that should please indie pop fans. “Morning Tide,” which starts out with a Belle & Sebastian vibe, is one of the highlights. Give it a few listens and the songs will creep into your skin. At the Echo on 11/14/08
MP3: Morning Tide
Other Noteworthy Records:

Annuals – MP3: Confessor – At the Fonda on 11/16/08

New Music Releases: 9/30/08
Dungen: 4 (Kemado) – While I’ve heard they draw somewhat heavily from early Swedish pysch rock ‘n’ roll, they sound unique to me. The Swedes’ fourth record is their most group oriented effort yet. Gustav Ejstes moves behind the piano and limits the flute solos. The album has a mellower vibe than the last two, with more emphasis on the free jazz; but they do manage to rock out a couple of times. Of the ten songs, five are instrumentals with the rest, as always, sung in Swedish. Recommended. At the Echo on 11/2/08
MP3: Sat Att Se
Ben Folds: Way to Normal (Epic) – I’ve never been a fan, but I listened to this one. His sense of humor definitely comes through, but I don’t have any real context to place it within. At the Wiltern on 11/14/08
Rademacher: Era EP (Jaxart) – Fresno’s classic indie rockers release a four song digital EP through Jax’s label. It’s another solid effort. See them at the Echo every Monday in October.
MP3: If U Know
Local Releases:
Le Switch: And Now…Le Switch (Autumn Tone) – I wrote the preview/press release for this back in March and it’s finally available worldwide (digitally). Old school fools like me can order the CD through Autumn Tone’s website. To paraphrase myself, it’s soulful early 1970s inspired rock ‘n’ roll. Recommended. See them at The Echo on 10/20/08
MP3: Pristine
MP3: Give Me Something
Restavrant: Return to the Tomb of Guiliano Medidici (Narnack) – A fun, lo-fi punk blues record that goes well with cheap beer. See them at the Redwood Bar on 10/15/08.
MP3: Joe D
The Western States Motel: Painted Birds Flying in the Orange Mirror Sun (Firebird Field Recordings) – These guys just announced that they’re doing the Spaceland residency in November. Available digitally.

New Record Releases: 9/23/08
Records I’ve Heard:
Brightblack Morning Light: Motion to Rejoin (Matador) – They don’t seem to play LA ever since his meltdown at the Troubadour a couple of years ago. No loss, the music’s average, neo-hippie stuff that we have our fair share of.
MP3: Oppressions Each
Friendly Fires: Friendly Fires (Beggars/XL) – This is a pretty decent indie, dance rock record but not something that I’m capable of fully supporting. At El Rey on 11/3/08
High Places: High Places (Thrill Jockey) – Above average indie, electro, noise stuff. This is another genre that I’m not really passionate about. At the Smell on 10/10/08
MP3: From Stardust to Sentience
Monkey: Journey to the West (Beggars/XL) – Collaboration between Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz), visual designer Jamie Hewlett and Chinese opera specialist Chen Shi-Zheng. The BBC used some of the music for their spots leading up to the Olympics. It’s another above average listen, but I’ll stop short of fully endorsing it.
These United States: Crimes (United Interests) – Another above average record that should appeal to fans of its genre (slightly Americana, somewhere on the more coffee shop side of blues). At Silverlake Lounge on 10/14/08
MP3: Get Yourself Home
TV On the Radio: Dear Science (Interscope) – The only record of the week (that I’ve heard) that really transcends genre and constitutes a must buy. The band incorporates so many disparate elements into a cohesive sound. It might be their most commercial record but still manages to be political, soulful and experimental at the same time. Recommended. Live at the Wiltern on 11/6/08
Local Releases:
Cold War Kids: Loyalty to Loyalty (Downtown) – I heard the single on Entourage last week, but I still haven’t heard the full album.
Jenny Lewis: Acid Tongue (WB/Reprise) – I’m definitely in the Jenny Lewis solo camp (especially when you talk about that last Rilo Kiley record). It’s not as immediate and fun as Rabbit Fur Coat, but her fans should be pleased with it. At the Orpheum on 10/30/08
MP3: Acid Tongue

New Music Releases: 9/9/08
Albums I’ve Heard:
The New Year: The New Year (Touch & Go) – I first got into the Kadane Brothers back in the Bedhead days circa 1994 or 1995 when my old roommate and I went to see them at the Replay in Lawrence, Kansas. There was a year or two where I went to sleep to Bedhead every day. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard The New Year had booked a show at the Echo, because I had no idea they were still around. And now a new album. The record’s classic Kadane Brothers. Most of the time Matt still sounds like he’s about 10 minutes away from hanging himself, but the way they slowly build a song is still fantastic. Recommended.
Live: The Echo on 9/24/08
MP3: The Company I Can Get (choice lyric: “the redneck in the red Corvette”)
Okkervil River: The Stand Ins (Jagjaguwar) – Maybe not quite as solid all the way through as last year’s The Stage Names (my favorite record of 2007) but it’s still damn good. I’ll write more about it later tonight. Recommended
Live: The Fonda on 9/23/08
MP3: Lost Coastlines
Pontiak: Sun on Sun (Thrill Jockey) – In the Black Mountain and Dead Meadow school of rock. Heavy guitar sounds. I haven’t completely absorbed it yet.
MP3: Shell Skull
Emiliana Torrini: Me and Armini (Rough Trade) – She sang the song at the end of the second Lord of the Rings movie. She’s Icelandic. She makes adult, Morning Becomes Eclectic type of music. Not really my wheel house, but it’s pretty pleasant.
MP3: Me and Armini
Woodhands: Heart Attack (Paper Bag) – This type of music is definitely not in my wheelhouse, but it’s still pretty popular. Indie, electro dance music along the line of Does It Offend You, Yeah? Live: On the Rox on 9/13/08
MP3: Dancer
MP3: I Wasn’t Made for Fighting
Local Releases:
The Broken West: Now or Heaven (Merge) – Another one of my most eagerly anticipated records of the year, and another success. The influences from the first record are still there (Teenage Fanclub, Badfinger, etc.) but the songs are more dynamic. The record has a more cohesive vibe and feels more like the product of a band. Not all the songs are jams, but some of my favorite tracks are more introspective (like "Ambuscade" and "Elm City"). And I really dig the layers of synths and pianos on "House of Lies" too. Lyrically, it's a very dark album. I just wish Merge would have released it on vinyl. Recommended

Live: Silverlake Lounge on 9/17/08

New Music Releases: 9/2/08
A pretty light week this week. Expect things to pick up again next week....
Albums I’ve Heard:
Brian Wilson: That Lucky Old Sun (Capitol) – It’s a pretty good, later day Brian Wilson solo album. It’s got an LA theme and the songs are broken up by spoken word interludes. The worst song is “Mexican Girl” and the best song is “Southern California.” It’s really hard for me to get too critical of it. See him at the Hollywood Bowl from 9/12/08 – 9/14/08.
Local Release:
Rainbow Arabia: The Basta EP (Manimal Vinyl) – I saw one of their first live shows, and I’d like to reserve judgement. The band features Danny from Wiskey Biscuit and Future Pigeon. Pitchfork gave it a pretty good review. Download “Let Them Dance”

New Music Releases 8/19/08
Records I’ve Heard:
GZA/Genius: Pro Tools (Babygrande) – There are some Wu-Tang Clan-esque tunes. He’s still a strong lyricist and there are a few standouts, but I wish there were a few more jams.
Jaguar Love: Take Me to the Sea (Matador) – Members of Blood Brothers and Pretty Girls Make Graves. The vocals are just too much – I couldn’t even get through it once. But it’s a love it or hate thing.
Download “Bats Over the Pacific Ocean” and “Highways of Gold”
Lykke Li: Youth Novels (Atlantic) – Much buzz surrounding this Swedish singer-songwriter. Bjorn from Peter Bjorn and John produced and co-wrote the record. Her voice is somewhere between Kate Bush and Bjork and the music is melancholy indie pop. She’s not afraid to throw in the occasional dirty lyric. At El Rey on 11/3/08.
Jennifer O’Connor: Here With Me (Matador) – Talented singer-songwriter from Brooklyn. At Spaceland on 9/9/08.
Download “Here with Me” and “Valley Road ‘86”
Lee “Scratch” Perry: Repentance (Narnack) – Jamaican reggae/dub legend. Andrew WK produced it and Moby makes a guest appearance. It’s very silly party music. At El Rey on 9/3/08.
Download “Pum Pum”
Stereolab: Chemical Chords (4AD) – To be honest, I haven’t paid much attention to Stereolab for the past decade (although I was a big Emperor Tomato Ketchup fan). This record’s a pretty successful synthesis of classic Stereolab with a Motown sound (which according to the press materials, was Tim Gane’s intention). The arrangements are kept fresh with strings, horns and vibraphones. My only knock is that I tend to get bored with Laetitia Sadier’s singing. It doesn’t matter if it’s in French (which I do speak) or English, I can’t understand what she’s saying and why she’s so bored saying it. At the Fonda 10/23/08.
Uh Huh Her: Common Reaction (Nettwerk) – The band’s named after a PJ Harvey album and features Leisha Hailey (actress from the L Word and band the Murmurs) and Camila Grey (Mellowdrone). It’s a pretty slick production, heavy on synths. See them at the Avalon on 11/14/08.

New Music Releases: 8/12/08
Records I’ve Heard:
Zach Hill: Astrological Straits (Ipecac) – As you’ve probably noticed, I’m not a big fan of so-called challenging music. The older I get, the more I listen to music that makes me feel good. Zach Hill, however, is one of the exceptions. Better known as the drummer for Hella, his first solo record could be the soundtrack to your descent into drug addiction. It incorporates his unique drumming (crazy time signatures, trashed cymbals, etc.) and features guest appearances from Les Claypool, Marco Benevento, Tyler Pope, his Hella bandmates and Dean and Randy from No Age. The second disc is a 33 minute single track collaboration with Marnie Stern and Benevento. This music’s not for everybody, but I find it compelling.
Local Interest:
Pierre de Reeder: The Way That It Was (Lumberjack Mordam Music) – The first solo record from Rilo Kiley’s bass player.
Inara George with Van Dyke Parks: An Invitation (Everloving)
Other Noteworthy New Releases:
Bigelf – At the Roxy on 8/13/08

New Music Releases: 8/5/08 (one week late)
I'm way behind with my new release updates.....
Noteworthy Records Released on 8/5/08:
Records I’ve Heard:
Darker My Love: 2 (Dangerbird) – The local band has put out an extremely likeable record that’s a lot more polished than their first record. This one will draw more comparisons to Supergrass, Jesus & Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and (label mates) Silversun Pickups than Can or My Bloody Valentine. The band’s two vocalists, Tim Presley and Rob Barbato, played/wrote (Reformation Post TLC) with Mark E. Smith in the Fall last year. They’re already a powerful live band, and should be even better when they finish their September tour with the Dandy Warhols.
The Faint: Fasciination (blank.wav) – I can (occasionally) get into really mechanized, soulless music if it’s fun. Unfortunately this one’s not that much fun. Most of the songs are just begging for dance remixes (see the download). It’s been seven years since Danse Macabre, and I guess I’m still putting them in that box.
Download “The Geeks Were Right (Does it Offend You, Yeah? Remix)”
Conor Oberst: Conor Oberst (Merge) – I’ve never been a Bright Eyes fan, so it’s noteworthy that Oberst put this album out under his own name (and chose Merge as the label to release it). Whereas Bright Eyes has always been about grand gestures, this record’s much more subtle and understated. And that’s a good thing in my book.
Download “Danny Callahan”
Elvis Presley: The Complete 1968 Comeback Special (RCA/Sony) – This is definitive four disc box set to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Elvis’ 1968 comeback special. At the time, Elvis was focused on his film career at the expense of his music career. His handlers decided a slick, televised Christmas special was in the cards. During rehearsals, the director saw Elvis and his buddies having fun and jamming together behind the scenes. He thought it was really neat to see Elvis (now a huge movie star) from that perspective had the sense to incorporate elements of that into the final special. It’s a fascinating historical document, the packaging is great, the sound quality is fantastic and Elvis’ voice is strong. A lot of the jokes are corny, but this would still make a fantastic gift for music fans. There’s a separate, companion three disc DVD set too.
Disc one of the box set expands on the original release
Disc two features the first “sit down” show and first “stand up” show
Disc three features the second “sit down” show and second “stand up” show
Disc four features the first and second rehearsal
Local Interest:
The Airborne Toxic Event: The Airborne Toxic Event (Majordomo) – I haven’t heard this yet. They’re getting a ton of press and nationwide radio airplay. See them with the Fratellis at the Wiltern on 9/16/08.
Download “Sometime Around Midnight”
On My Shopping List:
David Vandervelde: Waiting For the Sunrise (Secretly Canadian) – His last record was one of my favorites of 2007. I still haven’t heard this one (there seems to be a vinyl shortage). See him at the F*** Yeah Fest on 8/30/08

New Music Releases 7/29/08
Not a great week in new music, but I do want to pick up the Neil Halstead...
Records Released on 7/29/08
Records I’ve Heard:
James Jackson Toth: Waiting in Vain (Rykodisc) – He was the leader of Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice. His first solo record features Nels Cline, Carla Bozulich as well as members of Vetiver and Deerhoof. It’s less freak folk and more straight ahead singer-songwriter, but there are some interesting songs on here.
Download “Doreen” and “Look In On Me” and “Beulah the Good”
Wild Sweet Orange: We Have Cause to Be Uneasy (Canvasback) – They’re playing Lollapalooza this weekend and getting ready to tour with What Made Milwaukee Famous.
On My Shopping List:
Neil Halstead: Oh! Mighty Engine (Brushfire) – I’ve been a fan all the way back to Slowdive and including Mojave 3. What I’ve heard of this one sounds similar to his last solo record. They’re just good, acoustic songs with occasional pedal steel thrown in. Very pleasant, unassuming stuff. At the Hotel Café on 8/28/08.
Other Noteworthy New Releases:
George Carlin – his final comedy album, the HBO special was good
Alice Cooper – At the Wiltern on 9/4/08
Steve Cropper and Felix Cavaliere
Matt Pryor – the frontman for the Get-Up Kids and New Amsterdams. At the Troubadour on 8/16/08.
Scars on Broadway
Sonic Youth live EP – structured improve piece with Mats Gustaffson and a member of Merzbow
Takka Takka – (mp3)
U2 box set – each of the band’s first three albums is expanded to two discs
The Walkmen – digitally through Amie Street for $5, CD to follow; At the Troubadour on 8/21/08 & 8/22/08
Wilco – Yankee Hotel Foxtrot vinyl reissue (and I own two copies of the old edition, d’oh)
Andre Williams & the New Orleans Hellhounds (mp3 and mp3)

New Music Releases: 7/22/08
I didn't give the Dr. Dog a glowing review, but it's still well worth picking up (especially if you're into soulful Lennon/McCartney inspired songs with nice Beach Boys-style harmonies). You might want to give local bands Bodies of Water and Low vs. Diamond a listen too.
Noteworthy Records Released on 7/22/08:
Records I’ve Heard:
Arbouretum/Pontiak: Kale (Thrill Jockey) – On this release, Arbouretum sound like a more rocking (dirty 1970’s style) version of Will Oldham on this release. Pontiak is a new Thrill Jockey signee. The title of the record is a pun referring to the three John Cale covers. It’s an enjoyable listen. This is available digitally or as a limited edition (1,000 copies) split 12”.
Dr. Dog: Fate (Park the Van) – Given that We All Belong was #6 on my favorite albums of last year, this was one was eagerly anticipated. But expectations can be a motherfucker. The first half of Fate stacks up against their best work, but by the time track eight rolls around, I completely forget what I’m listening to. The fact that they made a song called “The Old Days” and it’s similar to “My Old Ways” might be a sign that they could have spent a little longer writing. Lyrically, it’s very dark. It’s still worth picking up, but you might want to temper your expectations a little. They’re a great live band, see for yourself at El Rey on 8/8/08.
Download “The Old Days” and “The Ark”
High Places: 3/07 – 9/07 (Thrill Jockey) – Brooklyn duo that gets compared to Beat Happening and fits somewhere between No Age and Abe Vigoda. This is a collection of previously released songs available on CD for the first time. See them at the F Yeah Festival on 8/30/08 or at the Smell on 10/10/08.
Benji Hughes: A Love Extreme (New West) – Benji Hughes is the kinda performer who will come out with a 25 song double disc collection as his debut album. Local concertgoers should be familiar with his name, as Scott from the Fold was an early supporter. There’s a lot of humor in the songs, so it’s no real surprise that he co-wrote “Let’s Duet” (with Charlie Wadhams) the funniest track in “Walk Hard.” At El Cid on 8/15/08 and 8/16/08. Download “You Stood Me Up” and “Why Do These Parties Always End the Same Way” and “The Mummy” and “I Went with Some Friends to See the Flaming Lips”
Pacific!: Reveries (Caroline) – Swedish electro-pop band that reminds me a little of Tahiti 80. Download “Hot Lips” and “Sunset Blvd (remix)”
Sunfold: Toy Tugboats (Megaforce) – This is all the members of Annuals, but with a different frontman. I haven’t really listened to it all the way through yet.
Local Interest:
Bodies of Water: A Certain Feeling (Secretly Canadian) – Haven’t heard this one yet. See them at Sunset Junction on 8/23/08 or the Echo on 9/10/08. Download “Under the Pines”
Low vs. Diamond: Low vs. Diamond (Epic) – They’re not too dissimilar to the Killers and U2. At the Troubadour on 8/13/08.
Other Noteworthy New Releases:
Avett Brothers EP
Black Kids – At El Rey on 7/29/08
David Bowie live in 1972
Brian Jonestown Massacre EP
Buffalo Killers – live at Safari Sam’s on 8/2/08

New Music Releases: 7/15/08
I've never been a Nas or a Hold Steady fan, so it's slim pickings this week....
Noteworthy Records Released on 7/15/08:
Local Interest:
Daedelus: Love to Make Music To (Ninja Tune) – “Guests include Grammy Award-winning rapper Paperboy, producer Michael Johnson (The Lilys, Holopaw), Taz Arnold and Om’mas Keith (Sa-Ra), N’fa (1200 Techniques crew), and chanteuse Erika Rose.” See him at the Airliner on 8/6/08.
Other Records:
Drakkar Suana
The Hold Steady – At the Avalon on 7/30/08.
John Mellencamp – At the Greek on 7/31/08.
Nas – Weiss reviewed this for the LA Times. At the Roxy tonight or the Glen Helen on 8/9/08.
Wire
Something I missed last week:
Billy Joel: The Stranger 30th Anniversary (Sony Legacy) – This one got played a lot in my cousins’ van when I was growing up and it remains Joel’s best selling studio album. “Just the Way You Are” (Record of the Year at the Grammys), “Only the Good Die Young” and “Always a Woman” were the big hits. According to Wikipedia, in 2003, it was ranked #67 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The two disc version of this reissued contains a live concert from 1977. The three disc version adds a DVD with a performance on the Old Grey Whistle Test and a 30 minute documentary on the making of the album.
