Mastodon with Borat
I made it out to Spaceland for the last night of The Minor Canon’s residency. Once again they sounded great. They threw in a cover of Built To Spill’s “Car” with the horns adding a nice touch. They also did the Pavement cover again. Anybody ever hear Elliott Smith’s version of “Car”? He did a great live version of it (when he could remember the lyrics). The Minor Canon were experiencing a little bit of the Mexican radio feedback problem that occasionally happens at Spaceland. It distracted Paul a little bit, but I’m still looking forward to picking up the live version of the show from Spaceland Recordings. If you haven’t heard any of those releases, the recording quality is very good. They’ve released Darker My Love, Patrick Park (with several unreleased songs), Irving, Parson Red Heads and many others. If you like these bands, check them out.
Tivo Alert: Modest Mouse on Letterman
Tonight’s Pick:
Sloan / Sea Wolf @ Troubadour ($15) – The newest album from veteran Canadian power poppers, Sloan is a lot of fun to listen to. I’ve only seen them once (at the Austin City Limits fest) and they were good. Sea Level Todd claims that seeing them last time they played the Troubadour is one of his favorite live shows ever (and he sees a lot of shows). My friend Stan claims seeing them last time they played Cinespace was one of the worst live experiences of his life (but not because of the band). Tonight should be much better. Sea Wolf is the Alex Church’s band (bass player of Irving). They’ve got an EP coming out on Dangerbird next Tuesday.
Also Recommended:
Mastodon / Cursive / Against Me! / Planes Mistaken for Stars @ Wiltern ($25) – Sometimes it feels great to be pummeled by incredibly heavy music. Mastodon play an appealing hybrid of prog metal, hardcore, punk, sludge and death metal. I saw them a couple of years ago at the Troubadour, and it was damn good. Unfortunately for people like me who prefer small venues, they’ve graduated to the Wiltern. If you haven’t seen them and like heavy music, don’t let the venue stop you. Tim Kasher, lead singer of Cursive is a recent transplant to LA (from Omaha). Kind of a weird opening act for Mastodon.
Probably Worth Seeing Too:
Rufus Wainwright @ El Rey (Sold Out) – I saw Wainwright a bunch of years ago at the Fonda before they renovated it. You guys remember that? Tonight he’ll have a full band, which should add an interesting dynamic. He’s a talented pianist and songwriter, but a little too show tune -y for me. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. If seeing Rufus Wainwright do his own songs isn’t quite gay enough for you, you can see him do Judy Garland’s songs at the Hollywood Bowl on 9/23.
The Living Sisters / The Watson Twins / The Chapin Sisters @ Echoplex ($10) – Great opportunity to check out some of our cities best female voices. The Living Sisters is the local supergroup of sorts featuring Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond), Inara George (The Bird and the Bee) and Eleni Mandell. They’re not really sisters.
Buffalo Killers / The Henry Clay People @ the Echo ($8) – Buffalo Killers play blues based, Rolling Stones-inspired stoner rock. The Henry Clay People are part of the burgeoning Eagle Rock/Highland Park scene. Echo Park’s just too damned expensive these days.
Dead Ponies / Pistolero / Gang Violets @ Silverlake Lounge
The Amateurs @ the Scene ($5) – The Amateurs are doing a Tuesday night residency at the Scene this month with some great support acts sprinkled throughout.
Tim Finn @ Largo – Founder of Split Enz, left for solo career and then joined brother’s band, Crowded House.

who the heck is speaking of Judy Garland?
Sloan tore it up at the Troub on Tuesday night. They are such great musicians, such great song writers, yet they've gone virtually unnoticed for 15 years. Besides making great albums, they are also excellent live performers, constantly raising the bar (gotta love how they can rock each other's instruments, hit beautiful harmonies, and perform awesome renditions of crowd favorites.) Truly one of the most underrated bands out there.
