Pavement Headline the Hollywood Bowl on Thursday

A cold kicked my ass all week, but I finally made it out on Saturday to Waved Out 2. Dungen put on a trippy show. Not the most exciting set I've seen them play, but they sounded good. This week's pretty ridiculous, look at all the shows on Thursday...

Pavement Play the Fox on Thursday and Coachella on Sunday

Last week I saw the first night of Helen Stellar's residency. They're sounding really good these days. On Thursday night, I saw The Minor Canon's last show before an extended "hiatus" and they sounded great. Then on Friday I went to see the Knux at Spaceland. High energy good times and a different vibe inside Spaceland.

Even if you're skipping Coachella this year, some great shows throughout the week...

[Pick of the Night] Helen Stellar / The Postelles / The Constellations / Healamonster & Tarsier @ Spaceland (Free) – There was a good crowd for week one of Helen Stellar’s residency. Tonight should be even bigger. The Postelles are a New York buzz band with a debut album coming out in June (they go on at the 9 PM slot). Albert Hammond Jr. of the Strokes produced their first single. The Constellations are a “Southern Gothic” band out of Atlanta with a major label debut coming out in June. They’re playing both Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.

Coachella Lineup Announced

What do you think? I guess the highlights for me would be Jay-Z and Baroness on Friday. On Saturday I'd go see Devo (who I've seen before), the XX and Girls (who I hear aren't very good live). The big draw for me would be Sunday: Pavement (who I've seen a couple of times), Phoenix, Sly and the Family Stone, Gil Scott-Heron and De La Soul.

I have seen as many of these bands as I've seen in years past. Some of the other bands I remember having seen before: PiL (they were good 20 years ago), Echo and the Bunnymen (they play the hits), She & Him (I like M. Ward), Yeasayer (seeing them live made me hate them), White Rabbits (not terribly memorable), Muse (great live band), Faith No More (they were pretty good 20 years ago), Z-Trip (entertaining), the Raeveonettes (I'd rather just listen to their albums), Camera Obscura (I saw a bad show), OCMS (decent), Bassnectar (wanted to drill out my eardrums to make it stop), Edward Sharpe (just too much), Gorillaz (awful), Thom Yorke (I'd rather see Radiohead), Spoon (I'd rather sit at home and listen to the records), Julian Casablancas (I'd rather see the Strokes), Yo La Tengo (did you build a time machine to 1995?), Matt & Kim (cute for a song or two), Local Natives (I'd rather see them at Spaceland)...

Sinking Radio - Pavement's "Harness Your Hopes"

Here's my weekly reminder to tune in to Sinking Radio with Sylvia, Todd and Matt Dwyer on Little Radio Friday from Noon to 2:00 PM. I think Todd's still out on tour with Herman Dune, but it's Matt's birthday, so the mood should be jovial.

Each week on the show, they feature an official You Set the Scene pick. My pick for tomorrow's show is Pavement's "Harness Your Hopes." The song was originally released as a B-side to "Spit on a Stranger" in 1999, but dates back to the Brighten the Corner sessions. I picked the track because it's featured on Matador's reissue of Pavement's Brighten the Corners (Nicene Creedence Edition) due December 9th. 

This is the fourth Pavement album to get the deluxe reissue treatment from Matador and like the other three, it's well worth picking up. Nobody hates re-buying records more than I, but Matador's does such a fantastic job, I can't resist.  This time around they've remastered the studio album (my third favorite Pavement record) and added 32 bonus tracks. 

Amongst the bonus tracks are a lot of b-sides (most of which are new to me, because I didn't buy a lot of CD singles back in the day), some super high quality radio sessions and four cover songs. While the "Killing Moon" cover has gotten a lot of play over the years, the Clean, Faust and Fall covers are a bit more obscure. This collection reminded me how much I prefer the playful, fun Malkmus over the recent guitar god Malkmus. It's pretty priceless during the Faust cover when he says, "Break into Stereolab."

If I haven't convinced you yet, Matador's throwing an added bonus into the mix. When you order the reissue through their Buy Now Get Early program, you get a vinyl LP of an unreleased live show from the era. Pretty, pretty good. Since Amoeba doesn't seem to take part in the program, you might have to order online through Insound. Use this link, and I get a little money.
