New Releases 2/21/06

It's another big week for new releases. Here are some of the more interesting bands or bands offering free downloads and/or appearing live locally in the coming months......

Recommended
NONE AT THIS TIME

Things I Need to Hear
Arab Strap The Last Romance (Transdreamer) - Sad Scottish rock. Appearing live at the Knitting Factory on 3/23/06.

Ray Davies Other People's Lives (V2) - Since he's my favorite songwriter of all time I had to buy it. I've only listened to it once so far.

Elbow Leaders of the Free World (V2) - I've never given them a chance, but I hear they're good.

Lilys Everything Wrong Is Imaginary (Manifesto) - Mabye this will be better than their last album? I still love Better Can't Make Your Life Better and The 3-Way.

Other Notworthy Releases
Arctic Monkeys Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (Domino) - Young British guitar rock sensations. I saw them at Spaceland and thought they were OK. Appearing live at the Fonda on 3/15/06.

Eef Barzelay Bitter Honey (spinART) - Solo acoustic album from the lead singer of Clem Snide. Appearing live at Largo on 4/11/06. This free download sounds like smart-ass indie rock.
Download "Ballad of Bitter Honey"

Bloc Party Helicopter EP (single w/remixes) (Dim Mak) - They are really milking that record. They already put out a remix album and now this...

Destroyer Destroyer's Rubies (Merge) - Dan Bejar's songs on the New Pornographers' albums are some of my favorites. Since Destroyer is all Bejar, you'd think I'd really like it. However, it's all a little too dramatic. I do think this one is better than his last one. I probably need to hear it a few more times before filing it away forever.

Dilated Peoples 20/20 (Capitol) - Backpack hiphop. I have a couple of their records and find them dull. Live at the House of Blues on 2/22/06.

Eels with Strings: Live at Town Hall (Vagrant) - I'm not a fan but maybe you are?

Ex-Boyfriends Dear John (Absolutely Kosher) - Appearing live at the Serious Store on 3/12/06 and later at the 3 Clubs. Gay pop/punk band from San Francisco.
Download "Him For Me"

B. Fleischmann The Humbucking Coil (Morr Music) Supposedly more organic elements added to the electronic (whatever that means).

Hell Is for Heroes Transmit Disrupt (Epitaph) - Sounds like standard British emo. This isn't for me.
Download "Kamichi"

The Howling Hex 1-2-3 (Drag City) - Neil Michael Hagerty's band.

The Lashes Get It (Columbia) - I saw them at Spaceland last month. A little like the Strokes mixed with Hot Hot Heat. They're doing the free Monday night residency at Spaceland in March.

The M's Future Women (Polyvinyl) - I saw them open for Archer Prewitt last week. Not bad but not particularly memorable either.

Maximo Park Missing Songs (b-sides and rarities compilation) (Warp) - How do you release a rarities compilation after one album?

Metal Hearts Socialize (Suicide Squeeze) - Young kids. Their label is comparing them to Modest Mouse, Arab Strap and Cat Power. Judge for yourself...
Download "Socialize"

Polysics Now Is the Time! (Tofu) - Japanese noise rock. Appearing live at Knitting Factory on 3/7/06.

Robocop Kraus They Think They Are the Robocop Kraus (Epitaph) - German post-punk band. This isn't for me.
Download "All the Good Men"

The Slackers Peculiar (Epitaph) Veteran ska reggae band. Appearing live at the Troubadour May 5th and 6th.
Download "The Mayo"

They Shoot Horses Don't They Boo Hoo Hoo Boo (Kill Rock Stars) - Appearing live at the Smell on 3/11/06. This isn't for me.
Download "Emptyhead"

Two Gallants what the toll tells (Saddle Creek) - San Francisco duo appearing live at the Troubadour on 4/4/06. Folky blues rock.
Download "Las Cruces Jail"
Download "Waves of Grain"
