Monday Night Music Options 9/24/07

The Besnard Lakes put on a fantastic show at the Troubadour on Friday night. They completely immersed the audience in sound. They’re masters of the loud-soft dynamic. Scott (read his interview with the band HERE) and Jeff were there, and also blown away by the show. The three of us were won over by their performance earlier this year at the Echoplex. Fortunately they were able to play a full set this time around (and as usual, I have no complaints with the Troubadour’s sound). The show reminded me of one of those great Spiritualized or Sigur Ros shows. If you’re into shoegazey, loud-soft dynamics you need to see these guys. The rain seemed to keep people away, but the band was very happy with the turnout and crowd response. It was one of those shows where people rush over to the merch table for albums and autographed posters. All their fans are just stunned that these guys haven’t blown up yet. They ended their set with a nice Southern California classic, Fleetwood Mac’s “You Make Loving Fun.” I have to say, the drummer did a nice Christine McVie.

Monday Night’s Pick (9/24/07):

The Happy Hollows / The Movies / Lo-Fi Sugar / Death To Anders @ the Echo (Free) – The last night of the Happy Hollows residency. Joe at Radio Free Silver Lake has a nice interview with them HERE. The Movies continue to be one of the most popular Eastside bands. I’ve heard good things about Lo-Fi Sugar and Death to Anders. Make sure to buy free birthday drinks for Marcos from the Movies (yesterday) and Todd from Sea Level (today).

Monday’s Other Options:

Gram Rabbit / The Spores @ Spaceland (Free) – This has been the most popular/packed residency of the month. Gram Rabbit play the weird, indescribable electro-desert rock. The Spores are a popular local band that has weird a puppet show. This is one of their last local shows before heading out on a big European tour in early October.

Editors / Ra Ra Riot @ the Wiltern ($20) – Editors get the Echo & the Bunnymen and Interpol comparisons.

The Valley Arena @ Silverlake Lounge (Free)

The Submarines / Emma Burgess / Western States Motel @ Viper Room ($10 or free with RSVP)

Bedroom Walls @ Mr. T’s Bowl (Free) – Romanticore.

The Valley Arena / Spleen United @ Silverlake Lounge (Free)

Martha Wainwright @ Hotel Café (Presale sold out) – Folk.

Del tha Funky Homosapien @ House of Blues ($22.50) – Hip-hop.

Foo Fighters @ Henry Fonda (Sold Out) – You had to buy the new record through Ticketmaster last week.

Secretary Bird / Kelly Demartino @ Bordello ($8)
