New Music Releases 2/26/08

Not a great week at the record store, but there are a few things worth mentioning. For a more complete listing check out Largehearted Boy.

Albums I've Heard:

Beach House: Devotion (Carpark) – Indie music snobs love these guys. It’s pretty and pleasant, but honestldoesn’t move me a whole lot. If you loved Mazzy Star you’ll probably love Beach House. For covers fans, they follow in the footstep of Beck and Built to Spill with a cover of Daniel Johnston's "Some Things Last a Long Time." See them at the Echo on 3/13/08.

[LOCAL] Mezzanine Owls: Mezzanine Owls EP (Jaxart) – This is a four song EP available on Amazon and iTunes (or as a limited edition 7”) from Jaxart (the newish label from Jax of Rock Insider). These guys have evolved a lot as a band. They’ve still got noise-pop influences but these new tracks are much more melodic and catchy than their earlier work. Yet another local band to keep your eye on. See them at their record release party at the Echo tomorrow 2/28/08.

Dolly Parton: Backwoods Barbie (Dolly Records) – How do people not love Dolly? She’s an icon who has been putting out records for over 40 years and she’s still making relevant music. This one has nine original songs and three covers. While her Fine Young Cannibals cover made me throw up in my mouth a little bit, the original songs are all a nice return to her country-pop sound. The title of the album is great. She’s probably the only artist in the world that everybody in my immediate family likes. My mom even named a dog after her. Hopefully she re-schedules her date at the Roxy.

Other Noteworthy Releases:

Cowboy Junkies, Dirtbombs, Ghostland Observatory, Goldfrapp, Gary Higgins (Red Hash on vinyl), Missy Higgins, Janet Jackson, Tift Merritt , Pete Rock, Psycho & the Birds (Robert Pollard’s in the band), Punch Brothers, Son Lux
