Live Music Options: 10/12/09 - 10/18/09

Blk Jks Play Spaceland On Thursday
Nights like Thursday are just a cruel joke to live music fans. It's another insane week of shows - old legends, new legends, 90's heroes and current Pitchfork darlings.
I caught Polvo last Saturday. The problems I had with their set list a few months back at the Echoplex were corrected. Great set. They played everything I wanted to hear.
Monday 10/12/09
[Pick of the Night] Light FM / Kav / Obi Best / Wrong Way Driver @ Spaceland (Free) – Light FM has the Monday night residency this month at Spaceland. Wrong Way Driver is Brian Thornell’s (Earlimart, Pine Marten) band. Kav was in the Happy Mondays for a few years. If you're a fan of the upstairs bar at Spaceland, this is your last Monday to take advantage of the unique thing you can do up there. Change comes later this week.
[Recommended] These Arms Are Snakes / DD/MM/YYYY / Signals / Moment Trigger @ The Smell ($7) – These Ares Are Snakes is a quality, heavy band.
[Recommended] Correatown / Square on Square / Summer Darling / The Rhone Occupation @ The Echo (Free) – Correatown has the Monday night residency this month at the Echo
An Evening with Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop from Travis @ Largo ($30)
Jonneine Zapata / Ruby Friedman Orchestra / Sissy Wish / FIM @ Silverlake Lounge (Free) – Jonneine Zapata has the Monday night residency this month at the Silverlake Lounge
Bell X1 / Family of the Year @ Troubadour ($17)
Fishtank Ensemble / Brass Menazeri / The Shpil @ Echoplex ($15)
Great Lake Swimmers / The Wooden Birds / Laura Gibson @ El Rey ($17)
Whitman / Sex Worker / Clark 8 / Psychic Reality @ Pehrspace
Delaney Davidson & His Ghost Orchestra @ Redwood Bar
Thursday @ the Glass House ($18)
The Fling / Deep Sea Diver / Tape Deck Mountain @ The Detroit Bar

Tuesday 10/13/09
[Pick of the Night] Bob Dylan and His Band / Johnny Rivers @ The Hollywood Palladium ($57) – Got to respect your legends.
[Recommended] Mono / Maserati @ El Rey ($18) – A couple of interesting, experimental instrumental rock ‘n’ roll bands. Mono is from Japan.
[Recommended] Mariachi El Bronx @ La Cita (Free) - The Bronx doing their mariachi thing.
Eddie Izzard @ The Echoplex ($20 - $25) – Early show at 7:00 and benefit for 826LA
Dewantron @ Spaceland ($10) – Brian & Leon Dewan – they’re inviting you to bring your own instrument and join in
Thee Vicars / Dirt Dress / Colbalt Cranes @ Silverlake Lounge ($8)
Margaret Cho @ Largo ($20)
The Devil Makes Three @ Amoeba (Free) – 7:00 PM
Pat Fish / Max Elder / Downy Mildew / Clay Idols / The Black Watch @ The Echo ($10)

Wednesday 10/14/09
[Pick of the Night] Bob Dylan and His Band / John Doe @ The Hollywood Palladium ($57) – Night two of three.
Junior Boys / Circlesquare @ El Rey ($18) – Halloween tour with costume contest. I liked their record So This Is Goodbye, but haven’t heard their more recent stuff.
Passion Pit / Tranz-Kunt-Intental / E 603 @ The Fonda (Sold Out) – Hipster approved show.
The Streets / Busdriver / Nosaj Thing / Mac Lethal @ The Glass House ($21) – The Streets rated high on Pitchfork’s albums of the decade.

Thursday 10/15/09
[Pick of the Week] Blk Jks / The Growlers / Mack Winston & the Reflections @ Spaceland ($12) – Blk Jks are a South African indie band. Don’t expect some sort of third wave Vampire Weekend stuff. It’s more along the lines of a psychedelic TV on the Radio. One of my favorite new groups this year. I caught their show a few months back at the Echo. Great stuff.
[Recommended] The Jesus Lizard / Model Actress / Black Elk @ The Fonda ($25) – David Yow’s still an unpredictable madman. A frontman like him doesn’t come around too often. Here’s a great chance to see them if you missed them back in the 1990’s.
[Recommended] Bob Dylan and His Band / George Thorogood @ The Hollywood Palladium ($57)
[Recommended] Yo La Tengo / Endless Boogie @ Avalon ($25) – They were one of my favorite bands in college, but the new record was a bit of a snoozer.
[Recommended] Le Switch / Paperplanes / Terry Prine @ Alex’s Bar in Long Beach ($5) – If you’re down in Long Beach and want to see some local bands, Le Switch is still one of my favorites.
Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub / Infantree @ Troubadour ($20) – Very talented guy.
The Flaming Lips @ Ricardo Montalban Theater (Free) – Buy the album at Amoeba on Tuesday or show up at the “Pop-Up” Store at the Ricardo Montalban Theater on Thursday for a chance to get in to the show. Like Yo La Tengo, I broke up with The Flaming Lips a few years ago, but I suppose I’d give them another shot for free.
The Streets / Gift of Gab from Blackalicious / Mickey Factz @ Club Nokia ($28.50) – Pitchfork darlings.
Dan Deacon / Nuclear Power Pants @ Echo ($10) – Another Pitchfork favorite

A Place to Bury Strangers / Darker My Love / All the Saints @ The Echo ($12) – I saw A Place To Bury Strangers a while back at the Viper Room. It’s so over the top, it’s kind of ridiculous.
