Live Music Options: 8/31/09 - 9/6/09

This week is not as overwhelmingly crowded as last week, but still some fantastic shows....

Monday 8/31/09
[Pick of the Night] Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears / Extra Golden @ Troubadour ($15) – If you’re a big fan of Stax soul, check out Black Joe Lewis. His last show at the Troubadour was one of the my favorite live sets of the year.
[Recommended] Local Natives / The Henry Clay People / Aushua / Fun @ Spaceland (Free) – The lines to get in for the Local Natives residency have been intense. Throwing the Henry Clay People on top of it will make it even worse. I’d get there before 9:30 if you want to ensure entry.
[Recommended] The Growlers / My Pet Saddle / Grand Elegance / The Moon Upstairs @ The Echo (Free) – I like the Moon Upstairs, but not too familiar with the other bands.
Bat for Lashes / Other Lives @ The Fonda (Sold Out) – I wasn’t too into the first Bat for Lashes, but the stuff I’ve heard from the new one is a lot better.
Billy Corgan and Spirits in the Sky @ Hotel Café (Sold Out) – Corgan with Dave Navarro on guitar, the Strawberry Alarm Clock’s keyboardist and a 19 year old drummer. Read a review of the Santa Barbara show HERE.
Lower Heaven / The Meek / Ojos Rojos / Jason Simon @ Silverlake Lounge (Free)
RX Bandits / Dredg / As Tall As Lions @ El Rey ($20)

[Pick of the Night] Club NME: Division Day / Bad Veins / Lovelikefire @ Spaceland ($10) – The new Division Day record is a super ambitious, well produced record that reveals new nuances and layers every time you listen to it. I’m excited to see how the songs translate live. It’s been too long since I’ve seen these guys.
[Recommended] Low End Theory: Peanut Butter Wolf@ Airliner ($10) – Video DJ set paying homage to 90s music.
[Recommended] Ween @ Grove of Anaheim

Sinking Radio: Lou Barlow's "Sharing"

Here's a quick reminder to point your internet browser to Little Radio today from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM for the Sinking Radio show. Todd's back out on the road, so expect Sylvia and a guest.
My pick for today's show is Lou Barlow's "Sharing." This is the first track off of Lou's new record, Goodnight Unknown (out October 6th on Merge Records). I'm a huge Sebadoh fan (especially Bakesale and Bubble and Scrape) and admire his work with Dinosaur Jr. (especially the new record). But Lou's super lo-fi stuff (Sentridoh) never did much for me. But I've got some good news..this new record's the most polished, satisfying solo stuff he's ever released.
Catch Lou at the House of Blues on 11/5/09 (tix HERE)

Ticket Giveaway: The Fruit Bats at Spaceland

The Fruit Bats are one of those bands that still hasn't fully found its audience yet. They're not obscure (they're signed to Sub Pop and frontman Eric Johnson is also in the Shins and Vetiver) but you ask a lot of music lovers and they still don't know much about them. When you see them live, they really connect with their audience; fans sing along and arguments erupt about their best album. So it just feels like they've barely scratched the surface of their potential fanbase...

I've got some tickets to give away for their show this Wednesday at Spaceland. So if you're not going to M.I.A. or Deerhunter or Dungen or The Dead Weather or Cake or Music Go Music do yourself a favor and check these guys out. You won't regret it. Opening the show are Death Vessel and AB & the Sea.

To win these tickets, email me [dukeufo at gmail] with the name of your favorite Fruit Bats' song. Please put your first and last name in the email and "Fruit Bats" in the subject line. The contest closes Wednesday at 2:00 PM.

Live Music Options: 8/24/09 - 8/30/09

Joe Pernice Appears at McCabe's on Saturday

UPDATED WITH THE M.I.A. SHOW AND FREE DEAD WEATHER SHOW
Anybody make it to Sunset Junction this weekend? Any highlights? I did make it to Elvis Costello last week. I read a glowing review in the LA Times, but I agreed with my concert companion when he said "This is more soulless than Disney's Country Bear Jamboree." In addition to wrecking others' classics, he even wrecked some of his own.
This is a pretty fantastic week to be a music fan in LA. The only problem is all the conflicts - Wednesday through Saturday are packed to the gills.
Monday 8/24/09
[Pick of the Night] Local Natives / The Parson Red Heads / Flying Tourbillon Orchestra / Red Arrow Messenger @ Spaceland (Free) – The Local Natives’ popular residency continues. This is my favorite lineup of the month.

The Villains @ The Roxy ($11.50)

[Recommended] Dungen / Woods / Kurt Vile @ Troubadour ($15) – I’m a big Dungen fan. They’ve been really good two out of the three times I’ve seen them.

Wolfmother @ the Roxy (Free w/ RSVP through their Myspace)

[Recommended] Ryan Bingham & the Dead Horses / Jonny Burke @ Troubadour ($15) – He put on a great show when I saw him at Stagecoach a couple of years ago.

He’s very skilled at writing dialogue. The new record features a bunch of covers and passages from the book. Not a good entry point, but fans should appreciate it.

Sinking Radio Reminder - Today at 2:00 PM

Here's a reminder to point your internet browsers to LittleRadio.com today from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM for the Sinking Radio show. Todd's still out of town, but Sean Johnson will be guest hosting and Kenan Bell will be stopping by. Kenan Bell will be joining Fol Chen at this Sunday's Summer Camp.
I don't have time to write it at the moment, but I'll be throwing the Byrds into the mix for my East Coast vs. West Coast debate. Expect one of their tracks on today's Sinking Radio show....

Farmer Dave Scher: Flash Forward to the Good Times

Farmer Dave Scher's debut solo record, Flash Forward to the Good Times, comes out next Tuesday via Kemado Records. Now if only he'd bring his Hot Nuts back to LA (he actually packaged and sold hot nuts for a while).

To celebrate the album's release I did a guest post for the Aquarium Drunkard. The post expands on some stuff I've written here about the Beachwood Sparks' formation and also includes brief career synopsis and some words about their continuing legacy on the LA music scene. Read it HERE.

Ticket Giveaway: Roots Reggae Night at the Hollywood Bowl

I've got some tickets to give away for the Roots Reggae party this Sunday night at the Hollywood Bowl. The evening features no less than three legends of the genre. Headliners Toots and the Maytals are one of the most successful (and OG) reggae bands. Also on the bill is Michael Rose, who is perhaps best known as the frontman for Black Uhuru (who won the first Grammy for reggae music in 1985). Opening the show is Gregory Isaacs who is widely credited with inventing the lovers rock style of reggae.

To win these tickets, email me [dukeufo at gmail] with the name of your favorite reggae artist. Please also include your full name and your address (these are physical tickets that will be overnighted to you). The contest closes Wednesday at Noon. Put "Toots" in the subject line of the email.

Local Natives Are Doing the Spaceland Residency This Month
Last week I managed to see Radar Bros. and the Minor Canon. It was great to hear some new Radar Bros. songs and see the Minor Canon with a string section. On Friday night I saw Japandroids and Future of the Left. Both bands reminded me of a lot of the stuff I used to listen to in college. I'm not sure I've ever seen so many audience members take off their shirts at an indoor club in Los Angeles. Guess it was hot in the mosh pit...
