TV on the Radio Play the Fonda
Saturday's Pick [3/31/07]:
TV on the Radio / Noisettes @ the Fonda (Sold Out) – The second of two sold out shows. If I didn’t have a wedding to attend…..
Also Appearing:
Earl Greyhound / The Starlight Desperation / Lion Fever @ Troubadour ($10) – I recommended Early Greyhound a bunch of times recently when they played the Silverlake Lounge. They played some well received shows at SXSW.
Mike Watt & the Missingmen / The Bellrays @ Safari Sam’s ($10) – This is a benefit and there are about 15 bands playing. The Bellrays are scheduled to go on at 8 and Mike Watt right after them.
Maria Taylor / Whispertown 2000 @ the Echo ($10) – Early show at 5:00PM (get there before the club night starts). Maria Taylor was the singer in Azure Ray. Conor Oberst appears on her new record.
Mitch Easter @ Silverlake Lounge ($10) – This is an early show, the Slounge turns into a Mexican gay bar on weekend nights. Easter was in Let’s Active (a perennial pop favorite for the record collector crowd) and produced my favorite R.E.M. stuff, Chronic Town and Murmur. He’s got a new solo record out.
This Song Is a Mess But So Am I @ the Smell ($5)

Sunday's Options [4/1/07]:
You Am I / Har Mar Superstar @ Spaceland ($12) – Veteran Australian rockers. Lee Ranaldo produced their early stuff.
Marc Ford @ the Echo (Free) – The Echo’s starting their Sunday afternoon country barbeques again. Marc Ford is the on again off again guitarist for the Black Crowes, who puts out his own music too.
Part Time Punks @ the Echo ($5) – The DJs celebrate April Fool’s Day by playing all covers. Or maybe not.

Friday Night Music Options 3/30/07

Adem Plays Tangier Tonight

Tonight's Pick:
Adem / Bedroom Walls @ Tangier – Adem was in Fridge. I like his albums, but with their layered electronics, they’re the product of studio mastery. Has anybody seen him live before? Tangier’s probably a good place to see him. He’s been on tour with Badly Drawn Boy, so here’s a chance to see him solo.
Also Recommended:
TV on the Radio / Noisettes @ the Fonda (Sold Out) – I finally came around to TV on the Radio. Most people say they’re amazing live, but unfortunately I haven't seen them.
Jon Brion @ Largo ($10) – Get there very, very, very early if you want to get in.
Mike Stinson / I See Hawks in LA @ the Scene ($5) – For the country rock fans.
Other Options:
RTX @ Relax Bar [5511 Hollywood Blvd] ($10) – Jennifer from Royal Trux has a new band and a new record. They may have the worst Myspace page I’ve ever seen. They’re trying to sell you so much shit it won’t even load. Good job with that.
A Farewell to Long Gone John: The Willowz / The Ettes / Candypants / Miss Derringer @ Spaceland ($10) – Sympathy for the Record Industry night.
Whitey @ the Echo ($15) – For the indie dance crowd. Dim Mak’s putting out some Whitey stuff in the US.
Sky Parade @ Safari Sam’s ($7)
Lyrics Born / Rhettmatic @ Knitting Factory ($19) – For the underground hip-hop crowd.
Antelope / Dos / Silver Daggers @ the Smell ($5) – For the all ages crowd.

Morrissey at the Hollywood Bowl

Just a reminder that presale tickets for Morrissey at the Hollywood Bowl have gone on sale. The show is June 8th and tickets are kind of expensive. I'm sure if you do a well worded google search the passwords will pop up. There's a KROQ presale and fanclub presale. I had better luck with the KROQ presale.

Monsters Are Waiting Play Safari Sam's Tonight

Jill Cunniff (Luscious Jackson) @ Hotel Café ($12)
Vagabond Opera @ the Echo ($10) – Why did gypsy music get so popular all of a sudden?
Bobby Birdman / Messes @ Silverlake Lounge ($8)
Monsters are Waiting / 8MM @ Safari Sam’s ($10)

Rock the Bells - KROQ Presale Tomorrow

Wednesday Night Music Options 3/28/07

The promise of seeing Paul Williams at the Roxy last night was too much. He was billed as a special guest as part of Donovan Leitch's show. The show was packed. Leitch came out in Hedwig attire and did a few songs from the show. I haven't seen the Hedwig film since it came out in the theater, but I thought he did a great job with it. Eventually they did some Phantom of the Paradise songs and Paul Williams joined them on stage for one song. He joked that he couldn't remember the lyrics to a 30 year old song, but the crowd loved him anyway. At one point a marching band invaded the crowd and went up on stage. For the grand finale, Dave Navarro appeared and played guitar on a Stooges song and a Bowie song. It was exactly the kind of bizarre entertainment you want on the Strip. Does anybody know what the cameras were doing with Paul? Is somebody filming a documentary?

Tonight's Pick:
The Moon Upstairs / High Society @ Bordello ($7) - High Society is Jason Moore’s band. He’s got a rotating cast of musicians that includes Josh Schwartz, Kip Boardman and Mike Stinson. It’s basically a bunch of talented guys playing bluesy rock and country rock songs/covers. People like to get up and have a good time at the shows. The Moon Upstairs is a local band with a serious George Harrison influence. Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Also Appearing:
Hoodoo Gurus @ El Rey ($20) – I was a fan back in junior high. I haven’t heard their recent stuff.
Club NME: Datarock / Scanners / Lady Tigra @ Spaceland ($8) – This is a big show for the indie dance scene and Dim Mak. Scanners are a Dim Mak band from the UK. Their album was well received by the critics. Datarock has an electro dance album coming out in June on Nettwerk. They’re from Norway and played some well received shows at SXSW this year.
Low End Theory Club: Prince Paul / Tom Burbank @ Airliner ($8) – Prince Paul produced De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising and De La Soul is Dead. That’s serious cred. Anybody make it down to the Low End Theory Club? What’s the scene like?
The Ebbs @ Silverlake Lounge ($8)
Imaad Wasif / The Queens of Hearts in the Forest City (members of Hello Astronaut Goodbye Television) @ the Old Baldy Brewery (Free, All Ages) – This is about 40 miles from Silver Lake. But if you’re out in San Bernardino County and happen to read this blog….

New Release Tuesday 3/27/07

Pretty weak release slate this week. The next big date is April 10th. If you’re going to the record store this week, and still don’t have the new Shins, Arcade Fire, Broken West, Minor Canon, Menomena, Dr. Dog, and Besnard Lakes give them a listen.

Top Five Most Interesting New Relases:

The Fall: Post-TLC Reformation (Narnack) – The British press love it and Pitchfork hates it. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
Kate Havnevik: Melankton (Republic/Universal) – She’s going out on tour with Air. Download “Unlike Me
Kaiser Chiefs: Yours Truly Angry Mob (Universal) – If you liked the first one you might like it. I’m not feeling it. Sylus panned it, Pitchfork half panned it and Mojo, Uncut and Q like it. See them at Coachella on 4/29.
Klaxons: Myth of the Near Future (Geffen) – Hyped British dance rock band. Mojo, EW and NME recommend it and Rolling Stone does not. See them at Coachella on 4/29.
Let’s Go Sailing: Chaos in Order (GR2 Classics) – This one came out locally last year and it placed high on my top 10 list for local artists. Hot on the tail of a Morning Becomes Eclectic appearance and a couple of songs on Grey’s Anatomy, it’s been re-released with national distribution.

Other Noteworthy New Releases:
Mika: Life in Cartoon Motion (Casablanca) – This year’s Scissor Sisters? All over TV right now and they just played a bunch of SXSW shows and sold out the Troubadour. See them at Coachella on 4/29.
Mims: Music Is My Saviour (Capitol) – Mainstream hip-hop
Redman: Red Gone Wild (Def Jam)

Reissues:
The Byrds: Sweetheart of the Rodeo (Sundazed) – The classic country rock album and the only Byrds album with Gram Parsons. Reissued on vinyl.

Tuesday Night Music Options 3/27/07

Donovan Leitch / Paul Williams Perform songs from Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Phantom of the Paradise @ the Roxy ($21) – Several of my friends are really obsessed with Paul Williams right now. He wrote all those great songs for the Muppets as well as huge hits for Three Dog Night and the Carpenters. He’ll be performing some songs from the cult film soundtrack to Phantom of the Paradise tonight. Donovan Leitch will be doing some songs from a more recent rock ‘n’ roll opera, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. It promises to be an interesting night.

The Deadly Syndrome / The Happy Hollows / The Lights From Here @ Boardner’s ($8) – Radio Free Silver Lake’s one year anniversary. Joe’s a big supporter of local music at RFSL and he’s got his finger on the pulse. He does these Let’s Independent nights once a month. This time he’s got two really energetic bands (TDS and THH) and one instrumental (possibly Morricone-inspired?) band I haven’t heard yet. The Deadly Syndrome were/are one of my top local bands to watch out for in 2007. Since I put them on that list, they’ve signed with local label, Dim Mak. If you like Oh No! Oh My! and the Unicorns and stuff like that, check them out.

Other Options:
00I00 @ the Echo ($12) – With Yoshimi from the Boredeoms. Dissonant, but I’ve heard they’re great to see live.
Calla / Molecules @ Spaceland ($12) – Calla’s on the lush, dreamy end of the rock ‘n’ roll spectrum.
Datarock @ Safari Sam’s ($5 with RSVP) – For the indie dance scene. Also appearing tomorrow night at Spacleland with Scanners.
The Exploited @ the Knitting Factory ($19) – Punk rock.
Kate Havnevik @ Hotel Café ($10) – The Norwegian singer’s new album comes out today on Univeral. See her before she hits the road with Air. Somewhat similar to later Bjork.
Fairmona / Naptunes @ El Cid ($8) – Naptunes has some of the guys from the Switch.

El-P Performs at the Troubadour Tonight

Tonight's Picks:
El-P @ Troubadour ($18) – I just picked up that new El-P record. What I like about it is that it’s literate, but still hits hard. Jeff Weiss posted a much lengthier review today.
The Airborne Toxic Event / The Movies / The Monolators / Western States Motel @ the Echo (Free) – This is a very solid lineup. The Movies are one of my favorite LA bands. They’ve got a charismatic lead singer and a great sense of humor. Download “Rock in the Slingshot” Airborne Toxic Event has blown up so fast. Unlike way too many new bands, they’re not afraid of lyrical repetition and hooks. I’ve heard people compare them to the Killers and the Smiths. Download “Does This Mean You’re Moving On” (courtesy of Spin). Western States Motel is another relatively new local indie band with a growing fanbase. I haven't seen the Monolators yet, but their stuff on Myspace sounds pretty good.
Other Free Goodness:
Buffalo Roam / Castledoor @ Silverlake Lounge (Free)
Other Quality Stuff:
Dustin O’Halloran @ Hotel Café ($10) – Rocking the piano.
Midnight Movies / Kind Hearts and Coronets @ Viper Room ($10) – Midnight Movies have a record coming out on New Line on April 24th. I think people are really going to like it. Download “Coral Den
IAMX @ Safari Sam’s ($10) – For the indie dance scene. Chris Corner of the Sneaker Pimps.

Weekend Music Options 3/23/07 - 3/24/07

Big Business (yes they're messing with you) Play the Troubadour Saturday
A bunch of tickets go on sale Saturday at 10:00 AM. Peter Bjorn and John / Fujiya and Miyagi at the Fonda on 5/17; Bebel Gilberto at El Rey on 5/10 and 5/11; Daft Punk @ LA Sports Arena on 7/21 goes on sale at NOON.
Saturday's Pick:
Red Sparowes / Big Business @ Troubadour ($12) – Red Sparowes play intense instrumental music. The band features the guitarist from ISIS and the visual guy behind Neurosis. Big Business is on the local label, Hydra Head and features former members of Karp. Should be a nice, heavy night at the Troubadour.
Also recommended:
Elvis Perkins / Let’s Go Sailing @ Largo – Largo’s the perfect place to see this show. See Friday’s preview for their show at the Echo.
Gilberto Gil @ Royce Hall (Sold Out) – The Brazilian legend.
Rock Paper Scissors Rumble: Cheeseburger / No Age @ ExPlx ($8 adv / $10 dos) – Cheeseburger play sort of jokey, party anthems – like a hipper version of Andrew WK.
The Sharp Ease @ the Smell ($5) – This is their last show. Their bass player is leaving and the band is splintering.
Tobias Froberg @ Room 5 [143 North La Brea]- Paul Simon-influenced Swede.
I don't know, do you know?
Mandy Moore @ Hotel Café (Sold Out)
Noxagt / David Scott Stone @ the Scene
West Indian Girl / Slow Signal Fade @ Spaceland ($10)

Sunday's Choices:
Heavens / Boom Bip @ El Rey
The Gears @ Safari Sam’s ($10) – This is an early show – 6:00PM – 9:30 PM
Tribute to Prince: Kamran’s Birthday Party @ Spaceland – Kamran works for Spaceland Recordings. It’s his birthday.
Part Time Punks @ the Echo ($5)
Mika @ Troubadour (Sold Out) - He's being hyped as the new Scissor Sisters. He's in some new commercial. He seems very silly.

Friday Night Music Options 3/23/07

Elvis Perkins Tonight at the Echo
Friday’s Pick:
Elvis Perkins / Let’s Go Sailing @ the Echo ($15) – I finally got Elvis Perkins new record. The first half is definitely intense. I’ve seen him open for the Pernice Brothers and My Morning Jacket this year, and he’s a compelling performer. As I mentioned yesterday, Let’s Go Sailing had two songs on Grey’s Anatomy last night and appeared live on Morning Becomes Eclectic yesterday. Bravo.

Also recommended:
The Parson Red Heads @ The Unknown Theatre ($5) – The Parson Red Heads are one my favorite bands to see live in LA right now. They’re a whole lotta fun. The music’s along the lines of early Byrds and Beachwood Sparks. Although white jeans do make your junk look funny.
Birds of Avalon / Crime in Choir / Metalchicks @ Spaceland ($8) – I have a feeling I’m going to make it out to this show for a while tonight. I’m curious about Metalchicks (featuring Sugar from Buffalo Daughter and Yuka who has played with OOIOO and DMBQ). Download Bird of Avalon's "Set You Free" and "Bicentennial Baby" The band features two of the guys from The Cherry Valence. Crime in Choir is an instrumental prog band featuring original members of At the Drive In and the Fucking Champs.

I don’t know enough about these:
Heavens @ Troubadour (Sold Out) – Alkaline Trio offshoot. Kind of emo. Kind of Depeche Mode. Paulo Nutini @ Avalon ($18) – Very young, Scottish, blue eyed soul singer. If you like James “You’re Beautiful” Blunt you might want to check him out.
Good on Paper / Panda & Angel @ Pehr Space ($5) – Nice all ages action. Download Panda & Angel’s “Dangerous

Thursday Night Music Options 3/22/07

I hate to shit where I eat, but last night I went to check out Besnard Lakes, Dirty on Purpose and Helio Sequence at the new ExPlex (under the Echo). Besnard Lakes took the stage (maybe (9:45ish). Very powerful - high falsetto, guitar jamming. They sounded great - even better than their record. I was really getting into it. During the fourth song I see the sound guy approach the stage and hold up one finger. My friend turned to me, "One song left? how long have they been playing." As they finish this fourth song, the sound guy walks back to the soundboard and cranks up the Arcade Fire's new record. So much for that one song. Maybe a 25 minute set. Tops. As I drank my $9 Maker's Mark and Soda and thought about the $12 I'd paid to get in, I got a little annoyed. Keep in mind, Besnard is a touring band from Montreal on a big indie label, not some guys who hauled their equipment over from their practice space in Highland Park. Next up was Dirty On Purpose from Brooklyn. I wasn't that into what they were doing, but they definitely had a crowd there enjoying them. Without warning, after about their fifth song the Arcade Fire erupts through the PA again. The band was stunned "We were promised 45 minutes. How many more songs do we have?" Arcade Fire blaring. The band was like, "Sorry guys. I promise if you come see us in Costa Mesa tomorrow we'll play a full set." About 11:10 the Helio Sequence took the stage. I stuck around until about midnight and left. Not sure what was going on with the short set times (the same thing happened when I saw Kelley Stoltz upstairs), but I do know I'm about $42 poorer and only got to see the band I liked for 25 minutes. All three bands are playing the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa tonight. I highly recommend seeing the Besnard Lakes. For a similar perspective check out Little Radio's review HERE. I saw a few other blogger/writers there, including Jeff Weiss who apparently contributes to the LA Times now. Wonder what they thought of it all? Oh yeah, the ExPlex is pretty cool and it's got guys in the bathroom that watch you pee (and try to sell you gum). Hopefully the short set times was a one time situation.
Anybody else listen to Let’s Go Sailing on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic this morning? Very nice. You can watch it HERE. Also tune into Grey’s Anatomy tonight as two of their songs will be featured. Their debut album gets re-released next Tuesday.

Thursday's Pick:
Apples in Stereo / Page France / Headlights @ Spaceland ($15) – Great lineup for the indie pop fans. Apples in Stereo have their first album out in five years and I think it’s their best one yet. If you like all the new, manic indie pop bands, but aren’t familiar with Apples, do yourself a favor and see them tonight. Did you know Elijah Wood has a record label in the UK and Apples in Stereo is his first release? Me neither. Download Page France’s “Hat and Rabbit” and “Junkyard” Download Headlights’ “TV” and “Tokyo
Also intriguing:
Luke Paquin / Tobias Froberg @ Tangier ($10) – Is Tobias Froberg the next Swedish sensation? Alan McGee (Creation Records) apparently thinks so; he just signed him to his Poptones label. Go over to Froberg’s Myspace and listen to “God’s Highway” and tell me it doesn’t sound like Paul Simon. Luke Paquin is the guitarist in Hot Hot Heat. He’s doing the singer-songwriter thing around town. Anybody see him yet?
Hell Ya! Night: The Explorers Club @ the Echo (Free for 21+, $5 for the non-legals) – The Explorers Club does a ridiculously good of sounding like the Beach Boys. I’m really intrigued by them. If only I hadn’t stayed out until 1:30 last night…….
Anavan @ the Smell ($5)
Beck @ the Echo (Sold Out) - Early show at 8:00PM.
Other Stuff:
Badly Drawn Boy / Adem @ El Rey ($24) – Badly Drawn Boy’s music is in that new Hummer commercial. Adem will also be at Tangier on 3/30.
Rod Stewart @ Staples Center ($125) – I just pulled up 12th row tickets on Ticketmaster. I didn’t buy them, but I was just checking to see what was available. Yeah, Rod’s become a little bit of a joke, but he’s got a great catalog. Walk around Silver Lake for ten minutes and you’ll see how influential Faces were (especially on rock ‘n’ roll fashion). The music’s undeniable too. His first seven or so studio albums are also worth looking at too.

Wednesday Night Music Options 3/21/07

The Besnard Lakes Play the Echo Tonight

A plethora of options tonight.
Tonight's Pick:
The Helio Sequence / Dirty on Purpose / The Besnard Lakes @ the EXPLX ($12) – It’s been three years since the Portland dream rockers Helio Sequence put out their last record on Sub Pop. They’re only a duo, but they get a big sound, which makes them a lot of fun to watch live. Download the Helio Sequence’s “Blood Bleeds” and “Everyone Knows Everyone” Dirty on Purpose is a slightly shoegazey, more Yo La Tengo-inspired Brooklyn band who put out a good, but overlooked album last year. Download “Light Pollution” and “Mind Blindness” The Besnard Lakes is another new, very promising band from Montreal. I’m really enjoying their new Jagjaguwar-released CD. They get compared to a lot of disparate bands, but that’s mostly because unlike a lot of bands, they’re multi-dimensional. You have to spend some time with their album before you comprehend their nuances. I’ve said they’re like cross between Low and Band of Horses, but that’s probably bullshit too. I’m really enjoying them right now. Download “And You Lied To Me
Also Recommended:
Club NME: Goldrush / Electric Soft Parade / The Explorers Club @ Spaceland – Goldrush and Electric Soft Parade are two interesting British bands on an excellent local label (Better Looking Records). Goldrush gets the Wilco, Flaming Lips comparisons. I hear a little Snow Patrol too (when Snow Patrol still rocked a bit). Their record comes out on April 10th and its good. Download Goldrush’s “Heaven’s My Destination” and “Every One Of Us” Electric Soft Parade rocks a little bit harder. The All Music Guide compares them to Doves and Elbow with a hair of Ben Folds. Download Electric Soft Parade’s “If That’s the Case, Then I Don’t Know” Explorers Club are a heavily Beach Boys-inspired band from South Carolina. Like unmistakably Beach Boys inspired. Seriously. I’m not screwing with you. Download “Forever” (not a cover of the great Beach Boys track) and “I Lost My Head
Sondre Lerche @ El Rey ($24) – After that weird sidebar, Duper Sessions record, the indie pop singer from Norway returned to form with his latest. It’s a good record.
Local Picks:
400 Blows / Qui @ Knitting Factory ($12) – Local kick you in the dick rock.
Radars to the Sky @ Silverlake Lounge ($8) – Promising new local indie band.
The Mae Shi / Gowns / E.S.P.S. @ Mountain Bar – Noise rock.
Charlie Wadhams / Mike Andrews / Willoughby @ Bordello – Ex-Rex Aquarium lead man celebrates the release of his new album. Recorded with Mike Andrews.
Not for me, but maybe you?
James Morrison @ the Roxy – Yeah, his name’s James Morrison. If you like James Blunt you might want to check him out. He’s a new British singer-songwriter.
The Bravery @ Trobuadour (Sold Out) – Indie dance crowd.

Tuesday Night Music Options 3/20/07

Final Fantasy Plays the Wiltern Tonight
TV Alert: Lucinda Williams on Late Show with David Letterman
Tonight's Pick:
Bloc Party / Final Fantasy / The Like @ the Wiltern (Tix avail at door - $30) – Anybody see these guys last night? I had no intention of recommending these guys two nights in a row.
Also Appearing Tonight:
The Horrors / The Willowz / Wolf & Cub @ Cinespace ($5) – If you really want to see/hear a band, Cinespace is usually not the place to go. Most people are there to watch the DJs in the front room. Anybody see The Horrors at the Echo or Wolf & Cub at Spaceland last night? The Lovemakers / Fairmona @ Silverlake Lounge ($8 before 10 / $10 after 10) – Fairmona’s doing a Tuesday night residency this month at the Silverlake Lounge.
Nels Cline @ the Smell - You guys enjoying that new Wilco record? I think everybody in America already has it. Crazy file sharing.
Birds of Avalon / Nice Boys / The Time Flys @ the Scene (?) – Download Bird of Avalon's "Set You Free" and "Bicentennial Baby" The band features two of the guys from The Cherry Valence.
Boys Noize / Foreign Islands @ Safari Sam’s ($10) – For the indie dance scene.
Shows Not Happening Tonight:
SHOW MOVED TO WEDNESDAY - The Helio Sequence / Dirty on Purpose / The Besnard Lakes @ the Echo – SHOW MOVED TO WEDNESDAY
SHOW CANCELED - Amy Winehouse @ Spaceland – SHOW CANCELED – Well, once again the show must not go on for Winehouse. If you’re a club owner or booking agent you should demand a cancellation clause in her contract. She proves once again that she’s more than happy to leave her fans (and show promoters) high and dry. Completely unprofessional and very lame. Get yourself together Amy. Even Robert Downey Jr. made it to set every day during the height of his self destruction.

Greek Theatre Schedule 2007

The Greek Theatre is a fantastic outdoor LA venue. It's one of the rare venues where I seem to always have a great time. If you're on the fence about any of these bands, just buy the tickets.

Tickets are currently available through their Premier Club Membership program. You'll have to pay $12/ticket and you won't really know where the seats are going to be, but it's probably worth rolling the dice if you really want to see a show.

Monday Night Music Options 3/19/07

Bloc Party Plays Two Sold Out Shows at the Wiltern
Tonight's Pick:
Bloc Party / Final Fantasy @ the Wiltern (Sold Out) – For the indie dance crowd. Bloc Party’s like a guilty pleasure for me. Their music’s upbeat and mostly fun with a political undercurrent. As All Music puts it, they’re “equally inspired by Sonic Youth, Joy Division, the Cure and Gang of Four.” They’re fun to see live too. Final Fantasy is Owen Pallett, a Canadian violinist and member of the Arcade Fire’s extended family. He makes critically acclaimed baroque pop.
British Hype:
Amy Winehouse @ the Roxy (Sold Out) – Critically acclaimed young British sensation and soulful, Motown revivalist.
The Horrors / The Airborne Toxic Event @ the Echo ($12) – This one’s not a free show. The Horrors are a gothy, poppy-punk band that’s not too far from the Cramps. Next Monday’s show at the Echo with Airborne Toxic Event will once again be free.
The Fratellis / The Pipettes @ Troubadour (Sold Out) – The Fratellis are a new Scottish buzz band. Pete Townshend just joined them onstage at SXSW for a version of “the Seeker.” Check it out here at SPIN. I would imagine a lot of people are going to this show to check out the Pipettes. Judging by the SXSW coverage, I’d say the Pipettes were all over Austin. They photograph really well because they’re three girls in polka dot dresses. They do the Phil Spector girl group thing, but in a seemingly kitschy way. Seems like it’s all in good fun.
Australian Hype:
Berko / Airbourne / Wolf and Cub / Jamie T @ Spaceland (Free) – If you’ve been looking for an excuse to hit Spaceland all month, this is the best of the free, Monday night lineups in March. Wolf and Cub is an Australian band on 4AD. They just played a bunch of shows at SXSW.
Local bands:
Western States Motel @ Viper Room ($10) – Local indie rockers who are getting some good gigs and buzz at the moment. They’re also playing the Echo next Monday night for free, if you’re Viper Room averse.
Buffalo Roam / Castledoor @ Silverlake Lounge (Free)

Weekend Music Options 3/17/07-3/18/07

Au Revoir Simone Play the Knitting Factory on Sunday
Saturday's Pick (3/17/07):
The Parson Red Heads / Castaneda / Janet Klein and the Parlour Boys @ Bordello ($10) – The Bordello is the space formerly known as Little Pedro’s. The Parson Red Heads recently put out an album called King Giraffe. They’re good retro rockers along the same lines as the Beachwood Sparks.
Other Options:
The Youngs @ the Cocaine in Little Tokyo ($5) – Recent transplants to LA. Eccentric.
Dragonforce @ House of Blues (Sold Out) – Kind of like the Darkness does Metallica.
St. Patrick’s Day Party: Ollin Performing the Pogues Rum Sodomy and the Lash @ Spaceland ($10)
The Presets / Crystal Castles @ Ex_Plex ($17) – Electro-disco fun for the indie dance crowd.

Sunday 3/18/07
TV Alert: The Rolling Stones Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus on KCET 8:00PM – I just watched this for the first time last night. It’s really good. There’s live footage of Jethro Tull, Taj Majal, Marianne Faithful, John Lennon (with Eric Clapton and Keith Richards), Yoko Ono (ok, maybe this isn’t very cool, but its certainly annoying) and classic Brian Jones-era Stones performances. You even see Gram Parsons looking very wasted in the background.
Sunday's Pick:
Au Revoir Simone / Under Byen / Frida Hyvonen @ Knitting Factory ($12) – Au Revoir Simone is a Brooklyn based trio of ladies with keyboards. Apparently David Lynch is a fan. Download Au Revoir Simone’s “Through the Backyards” and Under Byen’s “Hjertebarn” watch Friday Hyvonen’s video for “I Drive My Friend”
Other Options on Sunday:
Dragonforce @ House of Blues
Via Violenta @ the Scene (Free) – This is one of the Scene’s free Sunday afternoon barbeque shows.
Part Time Punks: Tunng / DJ Alan McGee @ the Echo ($10)

Friday Night Music Options 3/16/07

That's not how you spell odyssey. No not even in England.
Friday's Pick:
The Zombies / Ian Hunter @ Henry Fonda ($45) – The last time I did a top 10 albums of all time list (on 10/31/05) the Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle was #8 on the list (I could only put one album per artist on the list, otherwise it probably would have been a little lower). It always puts a smile on my face when I hear it. Of course that record came out in 1968, so is it really worth seeing them in 2007? I’ve seen them twice. The first time I was elated to hear so many of my favorite songs performed live. The second time wasn’t as good. Seeing old dudes pump their fists in the air to Argent’s “Hold Your Head Up” and “God Gave Rock ‘n’ Roll To You” didn’t seem quite as cool. By all means, go see them if you haven’t caught them before and if you have, then you already know what you’re getting yourself into. Ian Hunter was the lead singer of Mott the Hoople.
Other shows:
Clipse @ El Rey ($24) – For the hip-hop fans.
The Youngs @ Abbot’s Habit in Venice (Free) – Recent transplants to LA.
Aceyalone @ House of Blues Sunset ($12) – For the underground hip-hop fans.

Thursday Night Music Options 3/15/07

Unfortunately, I didn't make it out Dr. Dog last night. I'd love to hear how it was. The main reason I didn't get out, can be seen in the photo above. This is what happens when some piece of shit on a suicide mission gets wasted in the middle of the afternoon and plows his car through a parked car, over a curb, over a speed limit sign and into two businesses. Absolutely bananas. Luckily some good folks came down and generously boarded up the windows to hopefully help prevent any looting.

Almost everybody's out of town at SXSW. Unfortunately I haven't had time to do my guide to SXSW. If you're there, go eat at Rudy's Barbeque and Curra's Grill. You won't regret it. Hopefully I'll have time to do a post later today...

TV Alert: Grizzly Bear on Last Call with Carson Daly
Tonight's Pick: The Shore @ Spaceland – The Shore is one of those local bands that got signed to and dropped by a major label before they ever had a chance. The lead singer’s charismatic and has a great voice. They write big, anthemic songs.

Also Appearing:

Death to Anders @ Zen Sushi
Thao Nguyen / Jeff Merchant @ Tangier – Download Thao Nguyen’s “Hills
Head Automatica @ Troubadour (Sold Out)

Dr. Dog Plays the Troubadour Tonight

TV Alert: The Shins on Conan O’Brien; Peter, Bjorn and John on Last Call with Carson Daly
Tonight's Pick:
Dr. Dog / Bobby Bare Jr. @ Troubdour ($12) – I’ve really only gotten into Dr. Dog in the last two weeks. I’ve always heard a lot of musicians I respect praise them, but I’d never heard their stuff (admittedly, Pitchfork’s hatred for the band didn’t help). Once again, Pitchfork is way wrong. These guys are damn good. If you’re into 1970s-era McCartney and classic pop-rock songwriting, give these guys a listen. Their new album, We All Belong came out on 2/27 on Park the Van Records and there are six or seven stellar tracks on it. It reminds me a little of Kelley Stoltz, who put out one my favorite albums last year. They appeared on Conan on Monday night. They seemed a little nervous, but seem like they’d be a lot of fun to see live. Download “Ain’t It Strange” and “Worst Trip
Also Recommended:
El Perro del Mar / The One AM Radio @ Hotel Café ($15) – Stan left a comment on yesterday’s blog about El Perro del Mar’s ExPlx show last night. Apparently Assbring brought it. The One Am Radio just put out a new record on Dangerbird Records. It’s good. Way mellow.
Chief Cornfoot's Comedy Hour @ Sea Level (Free) 8:00PM - Maria Bamford and others perform comedy.
Club Nights:
Club NME: Fujiya and Miyagi @ Spaceland – British dudes who love krautrock and are beloved by Pitchfork.
Dub Club: The Abyssinians @ the Echo ($15) – For the dub/reggae fans.
Low End Theory Club: Prefuse 73 / Bunny Rabbit @ Airliner Club ($8) – For the hip-hop fans. Bunny Rabbit’s producer is Black Cracker.

New Release Tuesday 3/13/07

This week's not nearly as jam packed as last week or next week, but there's still a few things to get you out to the store.....

Top Five New Releases:
The Fratellis: Costello Music (Interscope) – New band from Scotland with a lot of hype behind them right now. They just won the Brit award for Britsh Breakthrough Act. Kevin Bronson at the LA Times gives the record props today. Their show at the Troubadour on 3/19 is already sold out.
Rosie Thomas: These Friends of Mine (Nettwerk) – Folky singer, Rosie Thomas moves from Sub Pop to Nettwerk for her new album. The album features a cover of R.E.M.’s “The One I Love” with Sufjan Stevens. She also does Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird.” Catch her tonight (3/13/07) with El Perro del Mar at the ExPlx (below the Echo).
Various Artists: Stax 50th Anniversary Celebration (Stax) – This is not a skimpy, rip-off collection. The two-disc set includes 50 songs from the classic soul, blues and R&B label and all for an MSRP of $20. The usual suspects are here: Booker T, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes as well as some more obscure artists. It’s a very well done introduction to the label. Recommended.
Amy Winehouse: Back to Black (Universal) – Can you say crossover? The British, tattooed soul singer is already getting major radio airplay. She’s edgy, yet sings well enough to appeal to sorority girls and hipsters. A bit of drinker, she’s all over the tabloids in England. There’s resurgence in Motown-influenced music right now. Some of it’s pretty subtle, but not with Winehouse. See her at the Roxy on 3/19 and/or Spaceland on 3/20. She just won the Brit Award for Best Female Solo Artist.
Neil Young: Live at Massey Hall (Reprise) – This looks like a much better value than the Live at the Fillmore East disc that recently came out. It’s an unreleased, pre-Harvest 1971 solo set mostly with just Neil and guitar (or piano). Two versions are available – CD only and CD/DVD combo (this time the DVD is the actual show, not just a DVD audio version of the show). I’ll definitely pick this up. See the trailer for the DVD HERE.

Other Releases:
Ken Andrews: Secrets of the Lost Satellite (Dinosaur Fight) – The former lead singer of the band Failure. See him live at the Troubadour on 4/5.
Gilberto Gil: Gil Luminoso (DRG) – Just voice and guitar. Appearing at Royce Hall on 3/24.
James Morrison: Undiscovered – He just won the Brit award for Best Male Solo Artist. Catch him at the Roxy on 3/21 “You Give Me Something” (Video Stream)

Reissues:
The Buckaroos: Best of the Buckaroos (Sundazed) – Buck Owens and the Buckaroos defined the Bakersfield sound. Artists like Merle Haggard, Gram Parsons and Mike Stinson owe a lot to these country innovators.
The Electric Prunes: Just Good Old Rock ‘n’ Roll (Collectors Choice) – Not the same dudes who made the classic, “I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night).” This lineup was a bit more countrified.
The Electric Prunes: Release of an Oath (Collectors Choice) – This lineup featured David Axelrod. This preceded Just Good Old Rock ’n’ Roll and is an example of early prog (but the whole album’s only 24 minutes long).
The Goldebriars: Straight Ahead (Collectors Choice) – Early folk-pop featuring Curt Boettcher (the Association and the Millennium)
The Goldebriars: S/T (Collectors Choice) - Early folk-pop featuring Curt Boettcher (the Association and the Millennium)

Tuesday Night Music Options 3/13/07

El Perro del Mar Plays Tonight at The ExPlx
TV Alert: The Good, the Bad and the Queen on Letterman
Tonight's Pick: El Perro del Mar / Rosie Thomas @ the Ex_Plx ($17) – El Perro del Mar is Swedish singer, Sarah Assbring (those Swedes with their crazy names). Critics adore her new album. Inevitably they all say she’s influenced by Burt Bacharach and Phil Spector. To me her voice sounds like a combination of Julee Cruise and Kate Bush, however the All Music Guide says it’s a combination of Jane Birkin and Neil Young. I don’t get the Neil Young? I think we can all agree that it’s pretty, melancholy music. Rosie Thomas has a new record out today. It features a duet with Sufjan Stevens on R.E.M.’s “The One I Love.” There’s also a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird.”
Other Options:
Diplo / Bonde do Role @ Safari Sam’s ($18) – For the indie dance party crowd. Bonde do Role are Brazilians in the same realm as CSS. Diplo produced that first M.I.A. record.
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly / Hearts of Palm U.K. @ the Echo ($10) Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly is a new hyped British folk-tronica band. The British press compares lead singer, Sam Duckworth to Billy Bragg and gives him a lot of credit as a punk rock guy. To me it sounds more post-emo, like Dashboard Confessional.
Youth Group / In Waves / The Submarines @ Spaceland ($10) – Youth Group is considered Australia’s answer to Death Cab for Cutie.

Austin's The Sword Play the Troubadour Tonight

I went out of town last weekend, so the only live music I saw was Greg Diaz in the lobby of my hotel. Anybody make it out to the Sebadoh or Menomena shows? Sorry I missed them. This is the week of SXSW, so a lot of prominent local bands have already left town, but there are plenty of buzz bands in town this week on their way to or from Austin.
TV Alert: Dr. Dog on Conan; Amy Winehouse on Letterman
Tonight's Pick:
The Sword / Priestbird / Year Long Disaster @ Troubadour ($12) – The Sword are in town to give you a little slice of Austin before you head to SXSW later this week. They put out one of my favorite heavy records last year. They play Black Sabbath-inspired heavy metal with just great riffs. It’s along the same lines as Wolfmother, but better. Priestbird used to be called Tarantula A.D. Year Long Disaster is a local band fronted by Daniel Davies (Dave Davies of the Kinks’ son).
Other Free Entertainment Worth Checking Out:
Airborne Toxic Event / Foreign Born / Mezzanine Owls / Eagle and Talon / Peter Walker @ the Echo (Free) – Airborne Toxic Event is doing the Monday night residency at Echo this Month. Here’s a bill with some top quality local bands stripping out the electricity from their songs and playing acoustic. Some of these bands are pretty atmospheric, so you can see how their songs hold up. You can also see how attentive the Monday night crowd is.
Berko / Low vs. Diamond / Fionn Regan / Children Collide @ Spaceland (Free) – Berko’s doing the Monday night residency in March. Fionn Regan is an up ‘n’ coming Irish singer-songwriter along the lines of his touring mate, Damien Rice. He’s just stopping in LA for a couple of shows after his Australian tour and before he heads to Austin for SXSW. Download “Be Good or Be Gone” Low vs. Diamond are a local band that’s getting big in the UK. Children Collide are an Australian band on Flying Nun, that’s stopping in LA before heading to Austin for SXSW. They sound pretty good – go to their Myspace and check it out. Download “We Are Amphibious
Buffalo Roam / Castledoor / The Panda Band @ Silverlake Lounge (Free) – Buffalo Roam and Castledoor are doing a dual residency at the Silverlake Lounge this month. The Panda Band are an Australian band that’s playing a few local shows before heading to SXSW. Download “Musical Chairs
Also appearing:
Gosling / Gliss @ Safari Sam’s ($3)

Weekend Music Options 3/10/07-3/11/07

Menomena Play the Echo on Saturday

Saturday's Pick (3/10/07):
Menomena / Bon Savants / The Parson Red Heads @ the Echo ($10) – I just got turned on to Menomena last weekend while working at Sea Level. Some of the songs remind me a little of TV on the Radio. It’s interesting and experimental but not in the way that’s going to give you a headache. I’ll shut up now and let you download “Wet and Rusting” and hear for yourself. They’ve got great artwork too. It was designed by Craig Thompson who wrote that Blankets graphic novel. Check them out. Seriously. The Parson Red Heads are one of my favorite local live bands. They play 1960s inspired music in the same way the Beachwood Sparks used to play.
Also recommended:
Sebadoh / The Bent Moustache @ Spaceland ($15) – If you live on the east side, then you’ll probably want to see them at Spaceland. This is the reunion of the Sebadoh III-era lineup (Lou Barlow, Jason Lowenstein and Eric Gaffney). Go check out Sebadoh’s website for a load of great MP3s of live shows. Yip Yip / Old Time Relijun @ the Smell ($8)

Other things I'm curious about:
Signal Hill Transmission / Simon Dawes / Luke Paquin / The Cassettes @ Hotel Café – Several bands I want to see, but haven’t gotten around to yet. Luke Paquin’s the guitarist from Hot Hot Heat.
Old Time Relijun @ the Smell ($8)
NapTunes @ Canter’s – This is Joe’s band (he plays drums in the Switch) pop band. Aaron (lead singer of the Switch) plays guitar.
Do Make Say Think / The Berg Sans Nipple @ Troubadour ($15) – All Music calls it “psychedelic-influenced instrumental improvisations
Not for me, but maybe you?
My Chemical Romance @ the Forum (Sold Out)
Sunday's Options (3/11/07):
Minutes 'Til Midnight / The Quarter After / Asteroid #4 / Bon Savants @ Spaceland (Free) - This is a really good free lineup for Sunday night.
The Mountain Goats / Pony Up @ El Rey ($16) - John Darnielle's Mountain Goats are one of those well-respected indie bands that I've just never heard. I don't know. Download "New Monster Avenue" and "Lions Teeth"
EPMD / People Under the Stairs @ House of Blues ($29) - Hippity Hop
Australian Music Night: Beasts of Bourbon / Panda Band @ Troubadour ($10)

Friday Night Music Options 3/9/07

Here’s a Friday morning time killer, explore Yacht Rock (thanks to Earlimart’s Myspace page for reminding me of this)….

Friday Night Pick:
Earlimart @ The Getty (Free) – They’ve got an album recorded that people are dying to hear. Unfortunately they’re still between record labels. Advance reservations are booked up, but the standby line starts at 6:00PM. Show at 7:30.

Then:
Sebadoh / The Bent Moustache @ the Troubadour ($15) – This is the reunion of the Sebadoh III-era lineup (Lou Barlow, Jason Lowenstein and Eric Gaffney). Go check out Sebadoh’s website for a load of great MP3s of live shows. If you're an indie rock fan who hasn't seen Sebadoh, then what kind of indie rock fan are you? I always enjoy seeing Lou.

Also Recommended:
The Deadly Syndrome / To Live and Die in LA / The Cassettes / Cavil at Rest @ El Cid ($8) – The Deadly Syndrome are an up and coming local indie rock band on the Dim Mak label who are getting bigger by the day.
Fiona Apple / Jon Brion @ Largo ($75) – Benefit for Fiona’s friend.
The Tyde / Nice Boys / Japanese Motors @ the Echo ($10)

I know less about these:
Everybody Else / Simon Dawes / Peter Walker @ Safari Sam’s ($10) – Local music.
Softlightes @ Tangier ($10)
Rodney’s Roq of Fame: The Donnas / Redd Kross / The Nymphs @ the Fonda ($10.67) – The famous KROQ DJ got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today. Tonight he celebrates (and it’s cheap).
31 Knots / Two Ton Boa @ the Smell ($5) – Some all ages downtown excitement.
Anavan / Clipd Beaks @ Pehr Space ($5)
Razorlight @ El Rey (Sold Out)

Saturday Looks Good To Me Play Spaceland Tonight

I checked out Spaceland last night. Dandi Wind was on stage. Wow. That was some outfit and some performance. I'll leave it at that. The Young Knives finally resolved their visa issues and played a show. Unfortunately their energy was (understandably) a little muted. "We've been up for 24 straight hours. Sleep is for losers." They had a good sense of humor (the bass player's name is House of Lords) and were likeable guys. They've got a post-punk, Gang of Four influenced sound. They're headed to SXSW next week.
Tonight's Pick:
Saturday Looks Good To Me / Ladyhawk / Bright Light Fever @ Spaceland ($8) – Detroits’s Saturday Looks Good to Me are indie poppers who record for the Polyvinyl label. Joe over at Radio Free Silver Lake is a huge fan. Download “Meet Me By the Water” and “The Girl’s Distracted” Download Ladyhawk’s “The Dugout
Also appearing:
Spindrift / The Moon Upstairs @ the Echo ($7)
Quan and the Chinese Takeouts / The Switch @ Silverlake Lounge ($8)
Bright Eyes / Vetiver / Annie Stela @ El Rey (Sold Out)
Kenny Loggins @ Troubadour (Sold Out) – Cut loose. Footloose.
Luke Paquin @ Tangier ($10) – Hot Hot Heat’s guitarist.

The Young Knives Play Spaceland Tonight
Happy Birthday to the late Arthur Lee of Love. He would have been 62 today. Thank you for the all the amazing music. We miss you.
Tonight's Pick:
Club NME: The Young Knives / Dandi Wind @ Spaceland ($8) – Evidently their immigration problems continued, and they didn’t play their Safari Sam’s show last night. I got an email today that assures me they’re on a plane and they’ll be in town for this show tonight. I haven’t heard their record yet, but it has already gotten four star reviews from Mojo, NME, Q and Uncut. New Release Tuesday 3/6/07

It's a big day at the record store.

Top Five Most Interesting New Releases:

!!!: Myth Takes (Warp) – The dance-punk band is receiving strong reviews for their third album. Almost all critics agree that it’s a ton of fun and a great dance record, a few knock it down a notch for the actual songs. See them at Coachella on 4/28.
Air: Pocket Symphony (Astralwerks) – This one’s getting panned by a lot of critics, but I’m sure if you like the band, you’ll dig it. Nigel Godrich produced it and Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) contributes guest vocals.
Arcade Fire: Neon Bible (Merge) – This is one of the most eagerly anticipated indie albums of the year. Don’t worry, this is no sophomore slump. The dramatic music works well with the lyrical motifs. Win Butler tackles religion (Christ, the Antichrist, heaven, holy wars, and the Neon Bible metaphor), politics (war, choice, race), modern life (TV, technology, paranoia, celebrity, poverty) and mortality. If you liked Funeral, then you’ll like this one. There are a couple of tracks that you might skip over, but overall this is a great record. I fully expect it will be on my top 10 list at the end of the year. Unfortunately a manufacturing delay means the vinyl is delayed until the beginning of May. The artwork in the deluxe edition is pretty cool, but the music’s all the same. You’ll have to decide for yourself if it’s worth the extra money. See them at Coachella on 4/28. Letter Grade: A-
Albert Hammond Jr.: Yours to Keep (New Line) – Albert Hammond Jr. is one of the guitar players from the Strokes. His debut solo album makes a nice companion record to the Arcade Fire’s new album. As dark and heavy as that Arcade Fire album is, Hammond’s record is light and carefree. With its sunshiney songs and strummy guitars, this is a great soundtrack for this 75 degree day in Southern California. He even covers Guided by Voices (and sounds a lot like them) and Buddy Holly. Catch him in concert tonight at El Rey. Letter Grade: B
RJD2: The Third Hand (XL) – The former indie rapper goes indie pop on this record. The production is still interesting with lots of electronic beats and some inspiration from video games. I haven’t heard the whole thing yet. See him at the Henry Fonda on 5/14.

Other noteworthy new releases:
31 Knots: The Days and Nights of Everything Anywhere (Polyvinyl) – For the math rockers who like those odd time signatures. See them at the Smell on 3/9. Download “Man Become Me

Big Business: Here Come the Waterworks (Hydra Head) – Big Business is a local hardcore/punk/metal band on a very respectable local label. It features former members of Karp and Murder City Devils. See them at the All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock on 3/7. Pitchfork gave this a very respectable 7.9/10 today.
Bright Eyes: Four Winds (Saddle Creek) – Pitchfork gave this a crappy rating today, but if you like a band who really gives a shit what a critic says. I’ve been planning on doing a warbliest voice in indie rock post for a really long time, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. I think Conor Oberst would be pretty high (along with the Win from the Arcade Fire, the guy from CYHSY and the Wolf Parade guy). See them live at El Rey on 3/7 and 3/8. Download “Four Winds” and “Tourist Trap
