Menomena Play the Echo on Saturday
Saturday's Pick (3/10/07):
Menomena / Bon Savants / The Parson Red Heads @ the Echo ($10) – I just got turned on to Menomena last weekend while working at Sea Level. Some of the songs remind me a little of TV on the Radio. It’s interesting and experimental but not in the way that’s going to give you a headache. I’ll shut up now and let you download “Wet and Rusting” and hear for yourself. They’ve got great artwork too. It was designed by Craig Thompson who wrote that Blankets graphic novel. Check them out. Seriously. The Parson Red Heads are one of my favorite local live bands. They play 1960s inspired music in the same way the Beachwood Sparks used to play.
Also recommended:
Sebadoh / The Bent Moustache @ Spaceland ($15) – If you live on the east side, then you’ll probably want to see them at Spaceland. This is the reunion of the Sebadoh III-era lineup (Lou Barlow, Jason Lowenstein and Eric Gaffney). Go check out Sebadoh’s website for a load of great MP3s of live shows. Yip Yip / Old Time Relijun @ the Smell ($8)
Other things I'm curious about:
Signal Hill Transmission / Simon Dawes / Luke Paquin / The Cassettes @ Hotel Café – Several bands I want to see, but haven’t gotten around to yet. Luke Paquin’s the guitarist from Hot Hot Heat.
Old Time Relijun @ the Smell ($8)
NapTunes @ Canter’s – This is Joe’s band (he plays drums in the Switch) pop band. Aaron (lead singer of the Switch) plays guitar.
Do Make Say Think / The Berg Sans Nipple @ Troubadour ($15) – All Music calls it “psychedelic-influenced instrumental improvisations

Not for me, but maybe you?

Sunday's Options (3/11/07):
Minutes 'Til Midnight / The Quarter After / Asteroid #4 / Bon Savants @ Spaceland (Free) - This is a really good free lineup for Sunday night.
The Mountain Goats / Pony Up @ El Rey ($16) - John Darnielle's Mountain Goats are one of those well-respected indie bands that I've just never heard. I don't know. Download "New Monster Avenue" and "Lions Teeth"
EPMD / People Under the Stairs @ House of Blues ($29) - Hippity Hop
Australian Music Night: Beasts of Bourbon / Panda Band @ Troubadour ($10)
