Coachella Lineup Announced

See the full lineup at Coachella's site.

With Paul McCartney and Morrissey, the Friday lineup looks the best. But is it worth burning a vacation day? The bands I'm most interested in on Saturday? I saw Dr. Dog and Fleet Foxes multiple times last year, and although I still haven't seen TV on the Radio - that's not enough. Ditto for Sunday. Seeing My Bloody Valentine and Okkervil River last year was cool, but not enough to get me out to the desert. The Cure bored me last time they played Coachella and Flavor Flav is just too ridiculous these days....

Local bands on the list:
Silversun Pickups
The Airborne Toxic Event
Peanut Butter Wolf
People Under the Stairs
Steve Aoki
The Knux
Ariel Pink
Henry Rollins
Thenewno2
Trv$DJ-AM
The Aggrolites
Brian Jonestown Massacre
Jenny Lewis
No Age
Perry Farrell
Shepard Fairey

Sinking Radio: Merle Haggard's

This is my weekly reminder to tune in to the Sinking Radio show on LittleRadio.com. The show airs Friday from Noon to 2:00 PM. I believe Todd's back in town after running up the coast with Le Switch.

Each week on the show, the DJs kindly play an official You Set the Scene pick. My pick for tomorrow's show is Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried." To the uninitiated, the Hag is probably looked at as that redneck who wrote "Okie From Muskogee." In reality, Merle Haggard's one of the all time best songwriters and performers from any genre. His lyrics are full of humanity and I don't think anybody has written so many great ballads.

Most of 2008's music trends left me cold (although a lot of great music was released). I wasn't feeling the no wave revival or the gay disco revival or all the bands (spanning genres) with tribal drum beats. So as 2009 started, I got heavy back into the Hag.

My year started with a road trip with three friends to Buck Owens' Crystal Palace in Bakersfield to see Merle Haggard's first show back from lung cancer. When the cancer was announced, I immediately kicked myself for missing so many of his shows (I'd only seen him once). I knew I wanted to see him again, but worried his voice would be shot from the cancer.

As soon as the Hag hit the stage, he was home. Unlike a lot of the living legends I've seen, Merle Haggard knows why people love him. He stays true to himself as an artist, and it definitely doesn't hurt that he can choose from 75 or 80 fantastic songs he's recorded.

He talked about fighting cancer and getting part of his lung removed. Remarkably, he still sounded fantastic. He couldn't quite hit all the notes, but most guys his age can't. With so many great songs, he didn't play everything I wanted to hear, but I'm not complaining. It was a long, generous set. With such autobiographical subject matter, it's amazing to hear his introductions to the songs.

Meanwhile, my friend loaned me a copy of Haggard's 1981 autobiography, Sing Me Back Home. The book's written in a folksy style and gives a lot of background on the Hag and the inspiration for his lyrics. Being an outlaw wasn't a marketing scheme/pose for him. When Haggard lost his father at a young age, he rebelled against society in a big way. He was constantly running away and in and out of juvie. He eventually got thrown in San Quentin for stealing a car. He already knew how to play guitar, but it was there that he saw Johnny Cash perform and got inspired to become a more serious musician. It's a warts and all look at Haggard, but I came away liking him even more.

"Mama Tried" is probably the quintessential Haggard tune. It precedes 2Pac's "Dear Mama" by almost 30 years, but tells the same story. It's a heartfelt ode/apology to a delinquent's poor, single mother. Haggard takes a couple of liberties with the lyrics (he wasn't an only child and he wasn't sentenced to life without parole) but it's otherwise true. In the book, his mom says it still chokes her up when she hears it.

Buy tickets to see the Hag at the Grove of Anaheim on 2/5/09
Buy the Down Every Road box set (you really do need all 100 songs)

Sinking Radio - Spoon's "Well-Alright"

This is my weekly reminder to point your internet browser to Little Radio this Friday from Noon to 2:00 PM PST for the Sinking Radio show.

Each week, the show features an official You Set the Scene pick. My pick for tomorrow's show is "Well-Alright" by Spoon. This track comes from the forthcoming  Dark Was the Night compilation. The 31 track compilation is a benefit for the Red Hot Organization (dedicated to raising awareness of HIV/AIDS) and will be released February 17th on double-CD and triple-vinyl.

The curators of the compilation, Aaron and Bryce Dessner of the National, did a nice job finding contributors. It's the literate, public radio / Starbucks kind of indie rock (which I often enjoy). In addition to Spoon, it features: Arcade Fire, Feist, Iron & Wine, Bon Iver, Ben Gibbard, Grizzly Bear, The Decemberists, Beirut, Stuart Murdoch, My Morning Jacket, Dave Sitek, Sufjan Stevens, Yo La Tengo, Andrew Bird, Cat Power, Kevin Drew, The New Pornographers, The National, Yeasayer and Kevin Drew. There's also a handful of non-indie rock choices (Kronos Quartet, Buck 65 and Sharon Jones).

The track choices are a mix of interesting covers, solid originals and unexpected collaborations (Blonde Redhead with Devastations, The Books featuring Jose Gonzalez, etc...).  The long running time means that, for existing fans, there's a lot to dig into. And for your out of touch friends, it will serve as a great crash course on what's happening in music these days. Proceeds benefit a good cause and it's very fairly/reasonably priced (the CD set is $13.98 on Amazon with the vinyl going for $28.48).

My Bloody Valentine at Coachella?

Add them to the list. This rumour is pretty deafening....

New Music Releases: 1/13/09

Very slow week. Things pick up next week....

Noteworthy new releases:
City and Colour
Ravi Coltrane
Late of the Pier
Franz Nicolay – Hold Steady’s keyboardist
Notorious soundtrack – some big hits and some early demos from Notorious B.I.G.
Rokia Traore
The Derek Trucks Band

Reissues:
Bee Gees: Odessa (Rhino) – This is a three disc box set featuring the mono mixes and alternate mixes and demos. If you still only know the Bee Gees from their disco days, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. I’m sure the extra discs are completely unnecessary, but the record’s good enough to warrant the price. The record jumps genres and has some great lyrics (“It makes me laugh, you’ve got no friends” is probably my favorite). This is my favorite Bee Gees record.

Arthur Lee: Arthur Lee (Friday Music) – I’m a huge Love fan and I don’t own this (but I have the better songs). For completists.

Love: Love Live – Whisky a Go-Go 1978 (Friday Music) – I’ve got this one on vinyl. Again – it’s for completists only.

M83: Before Dawn Heals Us (Mute) – vinyl issue

M83: Digital Shades Vol. 1 (Mute) – vinyl and CD issue

M83: Saturdays = Youth (Mute) – vinyl issue

Local Updates:

Charlie Wadhams has a new EP entitled, In a Goldmine. You can download it at iTunes or pick up a vinyl copy at Amoeba.

Obi Best’s new record, Capades, comes out February 24th on Social Science Recordings. They’ll be hitting road for a national tour (including support dates for The Bird and the Bee) starting next week. Spin recently had some nice things to say about them.

A pretty big chunk of the SXSW bands have been announced. Here are the LA-area bands currently listed. Of the 81 bands listed, I’m pretty familiar with 41 of them. I’m thinking that a handful of these bands aren’t really from LA: Airborne Toxic Event, Dave Alvin, Ancestors, Jim Bianco, Black Math Horseman, Blu, The Bronx, Tom Brosseau, Grecco Buratto, Castledoor, Margaret Cho, Classixx, Crash Kings, Crystal Antlers, The Crystal Method, Dawes, Rocco DeLuca, Dommin, Fol Chen, Foreign Born, Robert Francis, Great Northern, Grouch and Eligh, Murry Hammond, The Happy Hollows, Relentless 7, Austin Hartley-Leonard, HEALTH, HoneyHoney, Iglu and Hartley, IO Echo, The Japanese Motors, Jay Nash, J*Davey, Jeremy Jay, Killola, Greg Laswell, Light FM, Lissie, The Little Ones, Los Super Elegantes, The Mae Shi, Magic Lantern, Magic Wands, Angie Mattson, Meliss FX, Mika Miko, Monte Negro, Myka 9, Terra Naomi, Night Horse, Patrick Park, Pedestrian, Mandi Perkins, Pierre de Reeder, Pocahaunted, Pop Levi, Princeton, The Quarter After, Red Cortez, Rediscover, The Rescues, Robedoor, Roll the Tanks, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Samantha Shelton, The Shys, The Soft Pack, Alyssa Suede, Sun Araw, Maria Taylor, That 1 Guy, 2Mex, U-N-I, Very Be Careful, Lucy Walsh, Emily Wells, Tyrone Wells, Western Keys, Year Long Disaster

Sinking Radio: Telekinesis "Coast of Carolina"

This is a reminder to tune in to Sinking Radio Friday from Noon to 2:00 PM on Little Radio. It's Todd, Matt and Sylvia's first show of the new year.

Each week on the show they feature an official You Set the Scene pick. My pick for this week's show is "Coast of Carolina" from Telekinesis. I picked this song to get in the spirit of the new year, because when January rolls around, we're all looking for new bands to get behind.

Telekinesis is another band from Seattle (it's so fertile up there right now) and their self-titled debut record is set to come out April 7th on Merge Records. I haven't heard the full album yet, but this first track is ultra catchy. Telekinesis is hitting the road with Ra Ra Riot in February. Buy tickets to their show at El Rey on 2/28/09 (tickets).

When it comes to record labels, Merge is one of the only that still gets my attention with each new release because it stays true to its indie roots. 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of Merge. Hopefully you've already ordered your copy of Score! and made plans to attend their five day festival in late July in North Carolina

In the spirit of celebrating Merge, here are my top 10 Merge releases of all time:

1) Neutral Milk Hotel: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
2) Arcade Fire: Funeral
3) Spoon: Kill the Moonlight
4) Radar Bros.: And the Surrounding Mountains
5) Spoon: Girls Can Tell
6) The Broken West: I Can't Go On, I'll Go On
7) Butterglory: Are You Building a Temple in Heaven
8) Superchunk: Foolish
9) Polvo: Cor-crane Secret
10) Spoon: Gimme Fiction

Indie 103.1 Goes Away

As I drove to work today I had Indie 103.1 on for a bit. They played an exclusive new Prince track. Then I noticed Kevin Bronson's blog "Indie 103.1 signs off. " Very sad indeed. They did a lot to support local music. It sounds like they're going to stick around as an online station.

Message From their site:

Indie 103.1 will cease broadcasting over this frequency effective immediately. Because of changes in the radio industry and the way radio audiences are measured, stations in this market are being forced to play too much Britney, Puffy and alternative music that is neither new nor cutting edge. Due to these challenges, Indie 103.1 was recently faced with only one option --- to play the corporate radio game.

We have decided not to play that game any longer. Rather than changing the sound, spirit, and soul of what has made Indie 103.1 great Indie 103.1 will bid farewell to the terrestrial airwaves and take an alternative course.

This could only be done on the Internet, a place where rules do not apply and where new music thrives; be it grunge, punk, or alternative ? simply put, only the best music.

For those of you with a computer at home or at work, log on to www.indie1031.com and listen to the new Indie 103.1 - which is really the old Indie 103.1, not the version of Indie 103.1 we are removing from the broadcast airwaves.

We thank our listeners and advertisers for their support of the greatest radio station ever conceived, and look forward to continuing to deliver the famed Indie 103.1 music and spirit over the Internet to passionate music listeners around the world.

New Music Releases - 1/6/09 (Glasvegas)

This winter cold has got me down. But the new releases are starting back up again, so here you go….

Records Released on 1/6/09:

Records I’ve Heard:
Glasvegas: Glasvegas (Sony) – These Alan McGee approved Glaswegians appeared on a chunk of top 10 lists last year. Lead singer James Allan’s lyrics are high in the mix, but if you’re anything like me, you still won’t understand what the hell he’s saying. Depressed working class is the best way to describe the lyrics. There’s one song’s about a social worker, another about an absent father, several songs about fighting in the streets – including one about getting stabbed and another about a son dying, one about seasonal affective disorder, one about sectarianism, and one about jealousy after cheating on a girlfriend. Musically, the band gets compared to British Sea Power, U2 and Jesus & Mary Chain. It’s not really my cup of tea, but I can understand the appeal. If you don’t have tickets to their sold out show at the Troubadour on January 14th, you can see them at Amoeba on the 15th.

Other Noteworthy New Releases:
Animal Collective – the anxiously anticipated vinyl is out with the CD to follow in two weeks
The Gourds – very popular in Austin
Robert Earle Keene – a live tribute album
