Live Music Options: 4/11/11 - 4/17/11

Yuck Play the Echo Wednesday and The Satellite on Thursday

I caught Casey Veggies, Dom Kennedy and Freddie Gibbs at the Echo on Tuesday. Veggies has potential but just needs to keep working. The highlight for most was when Tyler from Odd Future jumped on stage for the final song. Dom Kennedy had a few tight tracks. Gibbs was good, but a little mumblecore. I think the completely inattentive crowd was throwing him off his shit. I thought indie rock crowds were kinda lame, but Tuesday's crowd was just awful...

Live Music Options: 4/12/10 - 4/18/10

Pavement Play the Fox on Thursday and Coachella on Sunday

Last week I saw the first night of Helen Stellar's residency. They're sounding really good these days. On Thursday night, I saw The Minor Canon's last show before an extended "hiatus" and they sounded great. Then on Friday I went to see the Knux at Spaceland. High energy good times and a different vibe inside Spaceland.
Even if you're skipping Coachella this year, some great shows throughout the week...
Monday 4/12/10

Coachella Lineup Announced

What do you think? I guess the highlights for me would be Jay-Z and Baroness on Friday. On Saturday I'd go see Devo (who I've seen before), the XX and Girls (who I hear aren't very good live). The big draw for me would be Sunday: Pavement (who I've seen a couple of times), Phoenix, Sly and the Family Stone, Gil Scott-Heron and De La Soul.
I have seen as many of these bands as I've seen in years past. Some of the other bands I remember having seen before: PiL (they were good 20 years ago), Echo and the Bunnymen (they play the hits), She & Him (I like M. Ward), Yeasayer (seeing them live made me hate them), White Rabbits (not terribly memorable), Muse (great live band), Faith No More (they were pretty good 20 years ago), Z-Trip (entertaining), the Raeveonettes (I'd rather just listen to their albums), Camera Obscura (I saw a bad show), OCMS (decent), Bassnectar (wanted to drill out my eardrums to make it stop), Edward Sharpe (just too much), Gorillaz (awful), Thom Yorke (I'd rather see Radiohead), Spoon (I'd rather sit at home and listen to the records), Julian Casablancas (I'd rather see the Strokes), Yo La Tengo (did you build a time machine to 1995?), Matt & Kim (cute for a song or two), Local Natives (I'd rather see them at Spaceland)...

Coachella - Musings on Sunday

Sunday at Coachella got off to a little bit of a slow start. We headed in to Palm Springs to the first place that popped up when I searched for breakfast on Yelp, Cheeky’s. It was a bit pretentious but ended up being good. If somebody opened up one of those in Silver Lake they could print money. The bacon flight’s a good idea. We spotted Keenen Ivory Wayans for the second time of the weekend.

After eating, we headed to Rancho Mirage to meet some friends who were watching the Lakers game at the Yard House. The named turned out to be a tease when the bartender explained that the police had recently barred them from selling yards of beer.

We ended up with a Lot A parking pass for Sunday. It turns out they charge $20 for Lot A parking. Kind of high, but well worth it (esp after the long ass walk on Saturday). From the parking lot, we could hear Okkervil River finishing up their set. One of the only bands I was excited about seeing on Sunday. Oh well.

Lupe Fiasco was up next on the Coachella stage. Like his record, there were a couple of good moments. Matthew Santos came out for a few songs, including the big hit, “Superstar.”

Being completely lazy and uninspired by the lineup, we stayed in the shade of the VIP area. Peter Bjorn & John came on next. I’m still a big fan of their second and third records, Falling Out and Writer’s Block and enjoyed seeing them at the Roxy a couple of years ago. I put their new record (Living Thing) on last week, and thought they just sounded uninspired and bored with themselves. They seemed even more bored to be performing the songs live. A guest appearance from Lykke Li couldn’t save “Young Folks.” Background music.

At this point we ran into a friend who offered us a couple of catering tickets. If anybody ever offers you catering tickets at Coachella, do not turn them down. The food blows away the shit they sell. They offered up salmon, chicken or vegan and had a fresh salad bar. It’s the best place to see all the bands hanging out too. We saw Public Enemy, Okkervil River and The Knux hanging out. I’ve never been a Yeah Yeah Yeahs fan, but they were playing in the background.

We finished the best meal of the weekend and walked over to the Outdoor Theatre for Paul Weller. I know the first five Jam records pretty well, but I’m not super familiar with The Style Council or the solo records. Weller looked and sounded great. Johnny Marr even came out to help on “A Town Called Malice.”

If I hadn’t just seen My Bloody Valentine play a fantastic show at the El Rey, I would have been way more excited. Much to our surprise, we were able to march up as close as we wanted to the stage. After a couple of rough songs, the sound guy finally got the mix right. The band is so boring to look at, but they sounded great. Hopefully hitting this new creative stride will finally give them the confidence to finish some new material in the studio.

By this time, going in to work early Monday morning was weighing on me. I’d walked out about half way through the Cure’s set when they played Coachella 2004. Coachella 2009 turned out to be no different. The first song was new and I didn’t recognize it. The second song was an intense, dark song from Disintegration. The third song was a decent song off of Pornography, during which we said, if they play a hit next, we’ll stay. Instead they played another new song. “OK, we’ll give them one more.” And they played another new song. As we were walking to the car we heard “Lovesong” and as we drove away we heard “Pictures of You.” They ended up playing an epic set, got fined for going over and eventually got the plug pulled on them. Our loss.

Conclusion: I’m not really a festival guy. Even with free artists wristbands, VIP parking and meal tickets, it was just okay. I still wish I’d seen McCartney though.

Musings on Coachella - Saturday Edition

I was at the first Coachella in October 1999. I had a hooked-up VIP pass. There was a great communal vibe and I wandered in and out of the performing bands’ trailers. I stood on the side of the main stage and witnessed some fantastic performances. It was my first time seeing Morrissey and he did not disappoint. I went back in 2003, 2004 and 2005. 2005 sucked. I vowed to never return.

In 2007 and 2008 I went to the Stagecoach Festival (which takes place the weekend after Coachella on the same grounds). I had a great time both years. It’s a super laid back vibe and you can actually walk around with a drink in your hand. They even have a barbeque contest with great food. If you have the artist wristband, they shuttle you around on golf carts. I’ve seen legends and I’ve discovered new bands both years. This year the Stagecoach bookers took it in a full-on NASCAR direction, so I decided I’d sit it out.

As I was sitting at my computer watching some of the Coachella coverage last Friday, I felt like I was missing out. I’d been rejuvenated by My Bloody Valentine’s performance the night before at the El Rey, so I decided I was ready to brave Coachella again. When I got offered some free Side Stage wristbands for Saturday and Sunday, I was in.

The drive out on Saturday morning was pleasant. We didn’t have a hotel reservation, but drove by a Motel 6 and decided to check their website for a vacancy. $85/night – not bad for last minute on Coachella weekend. There was absolutely no traffic until we got a few miles from the venue. We used the right lane to bypass all the traffic and went around to the back side of the parking area in about three minutes. Unfortunately they route pedestrians the long way around the grounds. It’s a pretty exhausting 20-25 minute walk with no shade in the 98 degree afternoon desert heat. We headed for some shade in the artist compound. At Stagecoach they have coolers with free beer in the artist compound. At Coachella they have five gallon tanks of Arrowhead water. We ran into a friend who offered us a parking pass for Sunday.

We jumped in a golf cart with a friend who was parked in the vendor parking lot. He had a full mini bar in the back of his car, so we poured drinks into plastic cups and snuck them into the festival. Drive-By Truckers were playing at the Outdoor Theatre, so we went backstage and watched them from the side. They sounded as good as anybody can sound from the side stage. It’s a unique perspective, but not a great place to be a part of a show.

Twenty minutes into DBTs we walked over to the Mojave tent for Dr. Dog. The last couple of Dr. Dog shows left me cold. Toby was sick and didn’t sing much when they played the Hotel Café and the El Rey show was just underwhelming. This show restored my faith. Great band.

The last time I remember seeing Superchunk was at the This Ain’t No Picnic festival in 1999. I was never a Superchunk fanatic, but I followed them in college and still own their first five records. I didn’t have any expectations going in, since they don’t play many shows these days. I was completely caught off guard when they proceeded to blow me away. A steady and reliable band like Superchunk is elevated even higher in an era of completely transparent, blatant, trend-hopping bands. In a sea of bands (and festival attendees) crying for attention, they avoided the rock star clothes, attitude and posing and focused on having a good time. Mac and Laura still look great too. And yes, they closed their set with “Slack Motherfucker.”

I stumbled back to the artist area during Michael Franti and Spearhead. Icky. This line from Wikipedia pretty much sums it up: “Except for occasionally wearing crocs on an airplane or in a restaurant, Franti has been walking through life barefoot since 2000.”

Having never seen TV on the Radio and being a pretty big fan, I had to see them. They were pretty good. That’s as strong of a statement as I’m willing to make. Pretty good. Seeing them didn’t change my opinion of them in any way. Everybody was raving about Tinariwen in the Gobi tent.

Late Friday I finally got around to watching Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story on DVD. It’s a very informative and interesting documentary and Booker T. Jones features prominently. It was the perfect time to finally see him. Appearing with the Drive By Truckers as his backing band (they also appear on his new record), the band sounded great. Hearing Booker T. do “Green Onions” on his Hammond was one of the highlights of the festival. And put that documentary in your Netflix queue.

We snuck away towards the end of Booker T’s set to see the last song of the Fleet Foxes’ set. I still love those harmonies on “Mykonos.” There was a huge crowd taking it in too.

It was time for a dinner break. We moved through the crowd at Thievery Corporation and I ate some tacos. The food at Coachella is pretty underwhelming. Would it really be that hard to hire the Taco Zone or Kogi people next year?

A lot of people were really excited to see M.I.A. When I saw her at Coachella 2005, I found her mildly amusing. At Coachella 2009, she was just unbearably bad. A “singer” jumping around a bunch of dancers in DayGlo outfits while a backing track plays is not my idea of entertainment. The airhorn siren that blared every 15 seconds didn’t make it any more tolerable. Her records have some undeniably catchy moments, but her live show is a train wreck. Many of you may disagree, it’s okay, we can still be friends.

At this point, we decided we’d put some rock in our slingshot. We headed towards the Mojave tent where Turbonegro and Mastodon were closing out the night. Unfortunately, in order to avoid the crowd, we took the road behind the stages. When we arrived, the backstage areas of all three tents were shut off. Since there was no easy way to get in front of the stage we headed back to the hotel.

Once we got checked in to the hotel, the lights went out. You can see a lot of stars when the lights go out in the desert.

A post on Sunday’s show is coming soon…..

Coachella Lineup Announced

See the full lineup at Coachella's site.

With Paul McCartney and Morrissey, the Friday lineup looks the best. But is it worth burning a vacation day? The bands I'm most interested in on Saturday? I saw Dr. Dog and Fleet Foxes multiple times last year, and although I still haven't seen TV on the Radio - that's not enough. Ditto for Sunday. Seeing My Bloody Valentine and Okkervil River last year was cool, but not enough to get me out to the desert. The Cure bored me last time they played Coachella and Flavor Flav is just too ridiculous these days....

Local bands on the list:
Silversun Pickups
The Airborne Toxic Event
Peanut Butter Wolf
People Under the Stairs
Steve Aoki
The Knux
Ariel Pink
Henry Rollins
Thenewno2
Trv$DJ-AM
The Aggrolites
Brian Jonestown Massacre
Jenny Lewis
No Age
Perry Farrell
Shepard Fairey

Prince Added to Coachella

As Kevin Bronson reported last month, Prince has now been officially added to the Coachella lineup. He'll headline Saturday. Last month Aphex Twins, Redd Kross, Adele, Serj Tankian and Goldfrapp were also added to the lineup. For the first time ever, Amtrak will be running a Coachella Express train from Union Station and to the Empire Polo Fields. It's free, and only available to campers.

Coachella Lineup Announced

Tickets go on sale Friday and will run you way north of $300 for the weekend. Factor in the opportunity cost of using a vacation day, the gasoline and cost of a hotel and you could easily have a Hawaiian vacation. The Friday lineup looks the best to me (with the exception of Jack Johnson as a headliner). The Saturday lineup is weak. The Sunday lineup is just bizarre.

Bill's Guest Review - Coachella Saturday

Since I didn't have the will to attend Coachella this year, here's a guest review from my friend Bill. He's got good taste in music (loving the hip-hop, indie rock but probably digging upbeat music a little more than I). Bill went on Saturday, saw quite a few of the same bands I wanted to see (with a few exceptions of course).......

First thing I did was drink a water and have a slice of pizza.

Fields - I really enjoyed their set of poppy rock with nice harmonies. The male /female lead voices worked really well together. It was a nice way to start the day I may buy their new record.

Pharaoh Monch - I had fun with him, he did the three songs by him I know and a few others. We raised our fingers at the war and all all agreed that the only thing that can beat hate is love.

Fountains of Wayne - I liked their set a lot. Of course I am a staunch supporter of this band and I don't understand why no one else likes them. I thought they picked great songs to play, except maybe one too many from the new record. Also I thought the mix was too loud, but I was close. And no, they did not do "Stacey's Mom."

Lunch!

Roky Erickson - Blues infused rock. Saw a few songs - Rockin!

Jack's Mannequin - I saw the end of this set. He did a cover of Tom Petty's "American Girl." The band was tight, the lead singer plays piano. They were quite enjoyable.

Hot Chip - I saw the end of this set as well. I want to hear their record. People were dancin' up a storm. They were fun.

Peter, Bjorn & John - They were very good. They played most of Writer's Block, with a couple of older songs and the audience clapped appropriately. The woman who sings the girl part of "Young Folks" came out for that song [ed note: apparently this was actually Bebban Stenborg of the Shout Out Louds, not Victoria Bergsman who sings on the record]. After which most people left. But they rocked harder than I expected. Although all the lyrics are in English - when they talked to the audience it did not feel that it was their first language [ed note: they're Swedes, English is not their first language, but they're fluent]. I would love to see them again.

MORE FOOD!

Decemberists - I saw the end of their set as well. And it was good. Who knew I knew a song they did. Well I do. And they played it! I liked them. I will buy their record. There were some silly hippies dancing at this set.

Arcade Fire - Simply excellent. It is up there with the sets by The Pixies and QOTSA as the best sets I have seen at Coachella. They played everything I wanted to hear and I danced like a fool. (One of the benefits of going alone is that you can dance like an idiot and provide stories for those around you.) The quote from the lead singer “Thank you for your good manners, manners are the cornerstone to any great society” (weird eh – that’s approx what he said.) I will see them again!

Blonde Redhead - I saw the last 30 min of this set. I was amazed at so much sound coming from 3 people. But then I noticed the drummer had a trigger pad. The girl lead singer looks hot from a distance standing in moody lighting and fog. I have no idea if she really is. But I liked what I heard considering I didn't know them.

The Gotan Project - 10 well dressed individuals playing dance/world beat music. I enjoyed them. And would very much enjoy dancing to them with my girlfriend. 2 DJ/computer guys - 4 ladies in the string section, a piano player, a acordian player a singer, and a guitarist. Also fun video projections. A great (cut short) live show. They got started late and got kicked off because The Good The Bad And the Queen were coming on.

Cornelius - Crazy Japanese pop. 4 peeps on stage, cool visuals and I didn't understand a word. I saw a few songs then headed for the car. I liked it and would like to get a record by them. I would have watched more but it was getting late and I had been there for 12 hours. A great day.

Coachella Preview

Sorry for the lack of posts and missing shows I was supposed to attend. I was stuck in the Tulsa airport for a couple of days (stupid tornadoes and thunderstorms). For the second year in a row, I'm skipping Coachella. Most of the bands I'm really interested in seeing are playing more intimate shows around the area and I'll see them then. I weighing in with my picks for shits and giggles. Please stay hydrated and remember your sunscreen. My highlights are in bold.

Friday 4/27/07
02:30 PM: Noisettes @ Mojave – Haven’t heard them, but they’re another British buzz band. If you’re not in the mood for music, go see the Comedians of Comedy in the Gobi tent. They’re indie/hipster friendly and they’ll be there from 2:00 – 4:30PM.
03:00 PM: Brother Ali @ Coachella – If Noisettes aren’t any good check out this critically acclaimed blind, albino rapper
05:10 PM: Silversun Pickups @ Coachella Stage – The local band continues its miraculous climb. Seeing them during prime time on the main stage at Coachella would be pretty cool. 2nd choice: Of Montreal at Outdoor Theatre 4:55 PM – Their new album’s good and they put on a show. 3rd Choice: Tilly & the Wall at Mojave at 4:45 PM – Eccentric indie rock. 4th Choice: Gillian Welch at Gobi at 4:45 PM – Rootsy singer-songwriter with some really quality albums. Pretty packed time period really.
06:00 PM: Amy Winehouse @ Gobi – She could probably be playing the main stage so the Gobi tent might be pretty miserable. If it is, I’d go check out the Arctic Monkeys at 6:25 PM on the Coachella Stage (unless you’re going to their show at the Troubadour on Sunday night). They’re not mind blowing, but they’re energetic and better than a lot of bands.
07:40 PM: Jesus & Mary Chain @ Coachella Stage – Legends. I’m seeing them tonight at the Glasshouse, so I’d be tempted to skip it (but there’s nothing else going on).
08:40 PM: Jarvis Cocker @ Outdoor Theatre – The Pulp lead singer. If you’re more into hip-hop go see Busdriver in the Gobi tent at 8:25 PM. You might wanna start making your way over to the Coachella stage to see Interpol at 9:30 PM. They’re pretty hit or miss live, but maybe they’ll preview some new material.
09:55 PM: Sonic Youth @ Outdoor Theatre – I’m seeing them at the Greek this summer, so I might actually skip this and go see El-P in the Mojave tent at 9:50. He’s an intelligent rapper who hits pretty hard.
10:45 PM: Bjork @ Coachella – I don’t listen to her recorded stuff that often, but she’s a fantastic live performer and she doesn’t have any other LA appearances scheduled. After she’s done you might jump over to the Outdoor Theatre for DJ Shadow who begins at 11:15 PM. If you prefer gypsy punk, go see Gogol Bordello in the Mojave tent.

Saturday 4/28/07
Honestly I probably wouldn’t show up until about 4:00 PM today, but for the brave souls…

12:30 PM: Pop Levi @ Gobi – Recent local transplant who has a new, good album of T. Rex inspired rock. If you’re not into that, go see British folk-rockers Fields (not to be confused with Field Music, The Field or all the other bands with Field in the title) at 12:45 in the Mojave tent. After this I’d wander and people watch. The Cribs are playing at 1:45 PM in the Mojave and The Fratellis are playing after them at 2:55 PM. Bouncy UK bands.
03:50 PM: Roky Erickson @ Gobi – He’s a cult hero from the 1960s with a story that’s as interesting as his music. He’s an acid casualty who got really bad treatment for his mental problems. I’d go see him just to hear “You’re Gonna Miss Me” but a lot of you youngsters will probably prefer something brighter and more fun and see Hot Chip at 4:10 PM in the Mojave.
05:05 PM: The New Pornographers @ Outdoor Theatre – The disappointing thing about seeing the New Pornographers live is that Neko Case and Dan Bejar don’t tour with them. I’d watch a couple of songs and then jump over to see PB&J.
05:25 PM: Peter Bjorn and John @ Mojave - I recently saw them at the Roxy and although they disappointed a lot of people, I really enjoyed it. Travis is also playing the main stage at 5:00PM. I just saw them do an acoustic thing at the KCRW night and it was pretty damn boring. You can also see them at the Fonda on Sunday night.
06:15 PM: Andrew Bird @ Gobi – I just got his most recent album and haven’t spent a lot of time with it yet. He’s a singer-songwriter type. If you prefer nerd rock go see the Decemberists at the Outdoor Theatre at 6:20 (although I’m seeing them this summer at the Hollywood Bowl, so I’d skip it). If you prefer rock ‘n’ roll go see Kings of Leon on the Coachella stage (music snobs hate them, but they’re really not that bad). If you want a dance party vibe go see !!! at 6:40 PM in the Mojave.
07:30 PM: The Arcade Fire @ Coachella – I’m seeing them later this summer at the Greek. They’re usually fantastic live. Ghostface Killah is also very tempting at the same time at the Outdoor Theatre.
08:40 PM: Blonde Redhead @ Outdoor Theatre – They’re usually great live. Anybody see them last night at the Glasshouse? If you prefer a dance party, go see Girl Talk in the Gobi.
09:35 PM: Sparklehorse @ Mojave – Not exactly party music, but I love the records. I haven’t seen him in years, but they were great when I saw them. If you prefer a party vibe, go see LCD Soundsystem in the Sahara. They’re also doing a DJ set at the Standard on Sunday.
11:00 PM: Cornelius @ Gobi – I think the Japanese rocker’s new album is a bit boring, but he’s great live. He’s also playing at the El Rey on Monday if you’re not going to Coachella. The Good, the Bad and the Queen’s album is even more boring than the new Cornelius, but it is Damon Albarn from Blur and the Gorillaz, so I’m sure a lot of people will be interested in hitting the Outdoor Theatre. Black Keys are doing their bluesy-rock thing in the Mojave starting at 10:50 PM.

Sunday 4/29/07
Once again, I’d probably wait until 4:00 PM to show up, but I’m old and lazy.

01:45 PM: Lupe Fiasco @ Coachella – Haven’t heard him, but I like to use Coachella to see hip-hop guys, because I normally never see them.
02:25 PM: Tapes ‘n’ Tapes @ Mojave – If you’re not seeing them at Spaceland tonight, you might as well see them. They weren’t that good last time I saw them, but there’s not much competition this early.
03:30 PM: Grizzly Bear @ Gobi – I still don’t understand why their album topped every music snob’s list of best albums last year, but maybe seeing them live would shed some light? If you like bouncy British buzz bands, the Kooks are playing the Mojave at the same time.
04:00 PM: Explosions in the Sky @ Coachella – I just re-listened to their new album on the plane yesterday. Really good, dynamic instrumental indie rock. I find Soulwax to be terrible dance crap. A few weeks ago the Bad Religion guys forced us to listen to them during their photo shoot at Sea Level and I got an immediate headache. Junior Boys are easy to listen to electro-pop. Pretty good really. The band that stole the show at the KCRW night was Rodrigo Y Gabriela. They’re a Mexican duo who play acoustic guitars about as intensely as you can. They weave a little Metallica in and do a cover of Led Zeppelin. Yuppies eat this shit up. They got so many standing ovations I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was cool for about five minutes but got a bit bored.
05:15 PM: The Roots @ Coachella – They got me back into hip-hop in the mid 90’s with their live instrumentation and musicality. I find the Kaiser Chiefs pretty mediocre, they’re playing the Outdoor Theatre at 6:05 PM. CSS is an energetic dancey rock band from Brazil who honestly annoy me, but if you like the dance party they go on at 5:55 PM in the Mojave.
06:30 PM: Willie Nelson @ Coachella – I saw him last year at the Hollywood Bowl and he was pretty good. He doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the lineup, but that’s the beauty of Willie – he can play to all crowds. If you like the dance-rock, Klaxons go on at 7:10. I heard they were pretty good on Saturday at the Echo.
07:45 PM: Crowded House @ Coachella – Big reunion right after Willie. They’re also playing the Glasshouse on Friday night.
08:25 PM: Lily Allen @ Mojave – Just saw her at the KCRW thing and she sounded good. Mostly pre-programmed stuff, but hopefully she’ll have more of a band with her here. She just canceled most of her tour (clearly she doesn’t give a shit about the middle of the country) but you can also see her at the Wiltern on May 15th. If you don’t like the reggae light, Air goes on at 8:35 PM at the Outdoor Theatre.
09:40 PM: Happy Mondays @ Sahara – Pitchfork says that Bez didn’t get his visa in time. Who are you really seeing? Who knows. If it sucks go see electo-rockers Ratatat in the Mojave or Swedish party rockers Teddybears in the Gobi at 9:50 (they’re also playing the El Rey on 5/2). If you like overly sensitive singer-songwriter types, Damien Rice is playing the Outdoor Theatre at 9:50.
10:40: Rage Against the Machine @ Coachella – I thought they had two good songs. I don’t know if I could deal with the crowd for this one. I’d probably walk over to the Gobi and see obscene dance-rappers Spank Rock at 11:05. If you prefer 90s indie rock, the Lemonheads are playing the Outdoor Theatre at 11:10 PM. Anybody see them at the El Rey last night?

Coachella Lineup Announced

Well, the Coachella lineup has finally been announced. This year's festival has been expanded to three days - Friday 4/27/07 to Sunday 4/29/07. Still no word on whether the Police or Smashing Pumpkins reunions will take place.

Here are my initial thoughts:

Friday has the strongest pull for me. Bjork is an outstanding live performer. I don't sit around my house and listen to her CDs that much, but she's a very compelling live performer. I've seen Interpol a couple of times. They're totally hit or miss for me.. The Jesus and Mary Chain is a fantastic choice. I never saw them in their prime and I'm a huge Darklands and Psychocandy fan. I saw Arctic Monkeys at Spaceland and they were fun. I'm kind of a Pulp greatest hits guy, but I'd still be curious to see Jarvis Cocker live. I've seen Sonic Youth about 10 times, so it's hard to get really excited, but it's still a solid choice. It all depends on what DJ Shadow decides to do? I'm very happy to see Silversun Pickups on the bill. They've been working hard all year and they're blowing up right now, so it's a just reward. The Comedians of Comedy might be a nice break from music. I'm a little curious about the Noisettes, Tilly and the Wall, Gogol Bordello, Busdriver, El P, Gillian Welch andTokyo Police Club. I'm less excited about Peaches, Peeping Tom, Brazilian Girls and We Are Scientists.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers headline on Saturday. I have no desire to see them again, but I did see them a few times back in the early 90s. The Arcade Fire is a great choice and they're capable of putting on a fantastic show. Last time I saw them at Coachella I couldn't get close enough to really hear them. Tiesto? No clue. The Decemberists I haven't seen since they played Spaceland a really long time ago. I'd like to see them again. The Good, the Bad and the Queen is Damon Albarn from Blur's new band with Danger Mouse. I haven't heard the album, but I'd like to see them. Travis isn't my thing, but it's a decent choice. I've never understood how Coldplay got so big and they didn't. Kings of Leon isn't really my thing, but it's solid rock'n'roll. Gotan Project I know almost nothing about. The Rapture isn't really my thing. LCD Soundsystem will please a lot of hipsters. I love Blonde Redhead and think they're fantastic live. I love the New Pornographers music, but I'm always a little sad that Dan Bejar and Neko Case don't tour with them (maybe they'll join them at a giant festival?). The Black Keys, !!!, Hot Chip are good choices that I honestly haven't listened to very much. I'm very excited about Ghostface Killah, Cornelius, Sparklehorse, Peter Bjorn & John and Fields. I'm less excited about Girl Talk, The Cribs, MSTRKRFT, Ozomatli, Fountains of Wayne, Nightwatchman. I'm apprehensive about Roky Erikson.

Sunday's lineup looks the weakest to me. Rage Against the Machine is the headliner. I'm sure poeple are excited about this reunion show and while I don't mind their music, I think it will create a bit of a hostile environment. I really haven't heard Manu Chao. The Happy Mondays will probably excite people, but I always thought they were a little bit of a weak link to their scene. I'm not really an Air fan, but I don't have anything against them. I love Willie Nelson, but I just saw him last year. I wouldn't mind seeing Lily Allen, Spank Rock, Junior Boys, Grizzly Bear, Explosions in the Sky, the Roots but I don't have see them at a festival. I don't have much interest in Paul Van Dyk, Kaiser Chiefs, Damien Rice, Crowded House, Soulwax, Amos Lee, Jose Gonzalez, the Kooks, Ratatat, CSS, Klaxons, Tapes 'n' Tapes, Lupe Fiasco or Fair to Midland.

Tickets go on sale this Saturday.
