Ticket Giveaway: Kidrockers with Warpaint and His Orchestra

For all the parents out there. If you haven't taken your kids to the monthly Kidrockers party, here's your chance. I've got some tickets to give away for the Warpaint / His Orchestra show this Sunday at 1:00 PM at the Echo. Warpaint is a local, all girl group that recently signed to Rough Trade records. His Orchestra is fronted by musician/actor Douglas Smith who plays Ben on Big Love.

I don't have any kids myself, but as a member of the press, I have made it to a couple of these shindigs. Usually how it all goes down is that there's a brief introduction by the hosts (Matt Dwyer and Jonah Ray this week) followed by a few songs by the opening band, then a brief Q&A with the opening band and then a couple of more songs by the opening band (usually the kids are invited up on stage to dance during the final part). The hosts then pop up on stage again to introduce the headliner who play a few songs, then get asked a few questions, then wrap it up with a couple of more songs. The kids usually sit on the floor on Twister mats and parents usually stand around the outside (or hold the little guys). Parents can have a drink at the bar (hopefully they aren't driving) and parents and kids can order pizza and have it delivered from Two Boots. The whole thing lasts a little less than two hours.

To win these tickets, email me [dukeufo at gmail] with the name of your favorite pizza place in Los Angeles. Please put "Warpaint" in the subject line. The contest closes Friday at Noon.

LA Live Music Options: 4/19/10 - 4/25/10

Walking Sleep Have the Monday Night Residency at the Echo
Last week was a damn good week. Pavement played for two hours at the Fox Theater in Pomona last Thursday night. The show started off a little slow, but eventually the band displayed more energy than I'd ever seen them exert. Malkmus looked like he was actually enjoying himself. And Bob, he's the secret weapon. It was probably the only shot you had to see them play such a long set, so go ahead and kick yourself now for missing it. Then on Saturday night I saw Timonium and the Radar Brothers at Echo Curio. I really enjoyed both bands. I've seen the Radar Brothers three times with the new lineup and it seems to get better each time...

Pavement Play the Fox on Thursday and Coachella on Sunday

Last week I saw the first night of Helen Stellar's residency. They're sounding really good these days. On Thursday night, I saw The Minor Canon's last show before an extended "hiatus" and they sounded great. Then on Friday I went to see the Knux at Spaceland. High energy good times and a different vibe inside Spaceland.
Even if you're skipping Coachella this year, some great shows throughout the week...
Monday 4/12/10
[Pick of the Night] Helen Stellar / The Postelles / The Constellations / Healamonster & Tarsier @ Spaceland (Free) – There was a good crowd for week one of Helen Stellar’s residency. Tonight should be even bigger. The Postelles are a New York buzz band with a debut album coming out in June (they go on at the 9 PM slot). Albert Hammond Jr. of the Strokes produced their first single. The Constellations are a “Southern Gothic” band out of Atlanta with a major label debut coming out in June. They’re playing both Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.
[Recommended] Walking Sleep / Union Line / Goldenboy / Big Whup @ The Echo (Free) – Walking Sleep (f/k/a Flying Tourbillon Orchestra) continues their residency.
Crystal Castles @ Echoplex ($20)
So Many Wizards / Halloween Swim Team / Corridor / Lobstin @ Silverlake Lounge (Free)

Tuesday 4/13/10
[Pick of the Night] Public Image Ltd @ Club Nokia ($45) – Thinking about seeing them over 20 years ago makes me feel old (but I was a kid). Wonder how old that makes Johnny feel?
[Recommended] Retribution Gospel Choir / Funeral Club / Stevenson Ranch Davidians @ Spaceland ($10) – Retribution Gospel Choir is Alan Sparhawk’s (Low) other band. It’s a bit more amped up. Good stuff.

Ticket Giveaway: The Knux at Spaceland

If you're anything like me, you don't go see that many rap acts. But last year at SXSW by Saturday night (and after seeing about 45 guitar rock bands over the course of a few days), I was completely guitar rock-ed out. So on Saturday night I stumbled into Vice on 6th Street to see a few rappers. I didn't completely escape guitars (I think they all had live bands) but I still accomplished what I set out to do, see something different...
So in addition to seeing Asher Roth (who was pretty awful) and Janelle Monae (who was great) I saw the Knux. And they were super fun and really talented. Which brings me to Friday night...
My pals at Passion of the Weiss are putting on a show at Spaceland this Friday night. As my go to authority on rap, Jeff Weiss turned me on the Knux. And readers of his blog will recognize two of the other artists on the bill: Nocando and 5 O'Clock Shadowboxers (check out their Myspace page for "Stay Clean" which is the first rap song I've heard with an Elliott Smith sample). The Holloys are also appearing...
For more info and MP3s, go HERE..
To win a pair of tickets, email me [dukeufo at gmail] with the name of your favorite rap album of all time. Please put "Knux" in the subject line. Contest closes at Noon on Friday...

Helen Stellar Begin Their Monday Night Residency at Spaceland

It was my first time seeing Paul McCartney last week. All in all it was a really good show (his band sounded great, the setlist was solid, his voice sounded mostly great). The big complaint was getting there. Usually I take the LA Zoo shuttle, but for some reason it wasn't running (leased show maybe?). Instead we parked and took the shuttle up from Hollywood & Highland. Over and hour later we were finally at the Bowl. Ridiculously aggravating. Fortunately McCartney delayed the start of the show and I didn't miss anything, but when you're paying over $1 a minute to see somebody, you don't want to miss anything....
