Top 10 Local (Los Angeles) Releases of 2010

It was another great year to be a local music fan. The diversity of music in this town is pretty staggering. A few of these releases will pop up on national top 10 lists while a few others will probably only be on my own.....
10) Glasser: Ring (True Panther) – If you see a lot of local bands, then you’ve seen dramatic singing paired with weird outfits and extreme electronic beats (is it Har Mar’s fault?). For the record I like Har Mar, but a lot of the more tribal stuff makes me want to tear my eyes out and jam pencils into my eardrums. Glasser’s record teases at some of these elements, but falls solidly on the good side of the spectrum.
9) Local Natives: Gorilla Manor (French Kiss) –Somebody had to form a band that sounded like 1/3 Grizzly Bear, 1/3 Fleet Foxes and 1/3 Vampire Weekend – might as well be them. Nice harmonies. My only real knock is that some of the songs could have been tightened up a bit (but you could say the same thing about Fleet Foxes), overall a very solid debut.
8) Flying Lotus: Cosmogramma (Warp) – I’m not really a fusion fan or beats guy, so this isn’t really in my wheelhouse. But this is the kinda thing that I like to put on when I’m working (just what every artist wants to be – background music). Very few lyrics in there to get in the way, but plenty of textures to hold up on repeated listens.
7) John Carpenter: Fairy Tales Forgotten (self-released) – On this record, he’s got a little bit of a weird, almost sinister Shudder to Think vibe. His live show can be significantly more rocking and blues heavy. Either way, he’s an artist I’m keeping my eye on. Stream Album
6) Warpaint: The Fool (Rough Trade) – When you follow a band through its early evolution and lineup changes, you’re never quite sure what their debut record’s going to be like and how they’ll be received on the international stage. With Warpaint, it was even better than expected on both counts. Atmospheric and moody afterparty jams.
5) The Henry Clay People: Somewhere On the Golden Coast (TBD Records) – Longtime followers of the band were expecting more new songs (especially with the outtakes floating around out there) but as the first nationally distributed album, it’s a good representation of the band. They’re not concerned with changing the world, just helping you temporarily escape from it and I think Paul Westerberg would approve of that sentiment.
4) Off!: First Four EPs (Vice) – This has so much energy it transports back in time to seventh grade when I first got into punk and hardcore. The Circle Jerks were always a favorite so it’s appropriate that Keith Morris is involved. At the age of 55, Morris’ intensity puts all you youngsters to shame.
3) Le Switch: The Rest of Me Is Space (self-released) - The band tweaked their lineup, making more of a straight rock ‘n’ roll album this time around. I’ve always appreciated the honesty and way Aaron Kyle lays it all on the line when he sings. I volunteered to write press materials for this, so you probably already knew I was a fan.
2) Radar Brothers: The Illustrated Garden (Merge) – I was excited when the band met me at Verdugo Bar to gauge my interest in working on their press materials and even more excited after I took the record home and listened to it. They’ve been my favorite LA band for 12 years and this is their best release since 2002’s And the Surrounding Mountains. It’s got such a rich, warm, comforting sound – quite possibly my most listened to record of the year.
Download "Horses Warriors" (click through to Merge)
1) Aloe Blacc: Good Things (Stones Throw) – If you’re a fan of old school soul, Aloe Blacc’s the real deal. He’s an insanely talented singer and it comes off so effortless. He blows away all the other local, neo-soul singers I’ve seen. His “Femme Fatale” cover might be my least favorite song on the record, but it’s probably a good entry point if you’re not a big soul fan.
MP3: Dark End of the Street (not from the album)

Ticket Giveaway: Kidrockers with Warpaint and His Orchestra

For all the parents out there. If you haven't taken your kids to the monthly Kidrockers party, here's your chance. I've got some tickets to give away for the Warpaint / His Orchestra show this Sunday at 1:00 PM at the Echo. Warpaint is a local, all girl group that recently signed to Rough Trade records. His Orchestra is fronted by musician/actor Douglas Smith who plays Ben on Big Love.

I don't have any kids myself, but as a member of the press, I have made it to a couple of these shindigs. Usually how it all goes down is that there's a brief introduction by the hosts (Matt Dwyer and Jonah Ray this week) followed by a few songs by the opening band, then a brief Q&A with the opening band and then a couple of more songs by the opening band (usually the kids are invited up on stage to dance during the final part). The hosts then pop up on stage again to introduce the headliner who play a few songs, then get asked a few questions, then wrap it up with a couple of more songs. The kids usually sit on the floor on Twister mats and parents usually stand around the outside (or hold the little guys). Parents can have a drink at the bar (hopefully they aren't driving) and parents and kids can order pizza and have it delivered from Two Boots. The whole thing lasts a little less than two hours.

To win these tickets, email me [dukeufo at gmail] with the name of your favorite pizza place in Los Angeles. Please put "Warpaint" in the subject line. The contest closes Friday at Noon.

LA Live Music Options: 4/19/10 - 4/25/10

Walking Sleep Have the Monday Night Residency at the Echo
Last week was a damn good week. Pavement played for two hours at the Fox Theater in Pomona last Thursday night. The show started off a little slow, but eventually the band displayed more energy than I'd ever seen them exert. Malkmus looked like he was actually enjoying himself. And Bob, he's the secret weapon. It was probably the only shot you had to see them play such a long set, so go ahead and kick yourself now for missing it. Then on Saturday night I saw Timonium and the Radar Brothers at Echo Curio. I really enjoyed both bands. I've seen the Radar Brothers three times with the new lineup and it seems to get better each time...

McCartney Plays Two Sold Out Shows at the Bowl
Last week was an absolute feast while this week is a little bit of a famine. Spaceland should be hopping tonight with a free show from Warpaint and Dot Hacker. The Bowl will be nuts on Tuesday and Wednesday with McCartney. Division Day comes out of hibernation with a Thursday night Onion-sponsored show.
Here's what I managed to catch last week:
On Wednesday I made it out to the bootleg for Admiral Radley (I'm a big Grandaddy and Earlimart fan and it totally met my expectations) and Henry Clay People (fun to see them play with old bass player Noah while newer bass player Jonathan was on vacation).
On Friday I saw the Radar Brothers' record release show at Spaceland. The new lineup is fun: Dan Iead shredded on a couple of songs, Brian Cleary got some front and center attention on keyboards on a couple of tracks and the rhythm section was tight. It was my first time seeing Extra, and I enjoyed the Big Star/Cheap Trick influences.
On Saturday I was busy for most of the day but got over to the Echoplex in time to see Surfer Blood. They've got a bright future and tons of crossover appeal. Like early Weezer mixed with the Shins. Catchy as hell.

Monday March 29, 2010

Updates on Local Bands

I haven't done one of these in a long time. Here's an update on local bands:

Division Day just announced a slew of new tour dates. Their new album, Visitation, comes out on Dangerbird on 8/18/09. It’s going to catch you off guard (in a very good way). Check out their Myspace page for some streams and tour dates. Buy tickets for their September 2nd show at Spaceland HERE. Go to their label site to download a free remix.

Speaking of Dangerbird, Sea Wolf have completed their sophomore album. White Water, White Bloom is set to be released on September 22nd. Pre-order the record and see a slew of tour dates HERE. Buy tickets for their Sept. 17th show at the Troubadour HERE. Looks like the previously announced Spaceland show has been replaced.

Lou Barlow’s got a new solo record, Goodnight Unknown, coming out on October 6th through Merge Records. In addition to playing with Dinosaur Jr., he’ll be the opener too. Check out the tour dates HERE. Buy tickets for the November 5th show at the House of Blues HERE. Download the first MP3: “Gravitate”

Warpaint recently signed with Manimal Vinyl with Exquisite Corpse set to be released on September 22, 2009. Download two MP3: Billie Holiday (Pitchfork gave the track a 7 out of 10)and MP3: Elephants. Josh Klinghoffer is now an official member of the band. You can catch them at Sunset Junction on August 22nd.

Speaking of Sunset Junction, the performance schedule is HERE. Other local bands on the bill are: Gran Ronde, Miss Derringer, War Tapes, Rumspringa, Nico Vega, The Submarines, Love Grenades, Nico Stai, Local Natives, Fool’s Gold, Night Horse and Mika Miko (or Mica Miko – as the SJ website spells it).

Miss Derringer have a new record, Winter Hill, out on Triple X. Pitchfork recently gave it a solid 7.7 out of 10.

Night Horse have three split 7” singles coming out this summer on Tee Pee Records (the first one is already out and the next one comes out 8/4/09). Download MP3: Choose Your Side

Fool’s Gold recently signed with IAMSOUND. Their debut, self-titled record comes out on September 29th. Download MP3: Surprise Hotel (Pitchfork recently gave it an 8 out of 10).

Luke Top, Fool’s Gold’s frontman, recently released a solo record. Friends came out via Slow Death Records. Download MP3: Friends

Members of Foreign Born are also a part of Fool’s Gold. Foreign Born’s new record, Person to Person, continues to get good reviews. It currently rates a 70 on Metacritic. MP3: Vacationing People and MP3: Early Warnings

Labelmates of Foreign Born (Secretly Canadian’s got a great roster), Music Go Music will release their debut full-length, Expressions, on October 6th. Download MP3: Warm In the Shadows

Bedmates of Foreign Born (at least a bedmate of the lead singer), Glasser also got a track review from Pitchfork. “Glad” received a 7 out of 10.

Princeton’s debut full-length, Cocoon of Love, comes out September 29th on Kanine Records. They’ll be opening a slew of shows for Ra Ra Riot to coincide with the release. Follow this link to Pitchfork to download the first single, “Calypso Gold”

Speaking of Pitchfork (as I have like 10 ten times in this roundup), they recently reviewed the new Fol Chen record. Read that HERE. Spin Magazine recently put together a Prince covers record for its subscribers. Fol Chen and Lavender Diamond were featured. Fol Chen is headed to Europe for a September tour. See the dates HERE.

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros are also touring Europe in support of their debut album, Up From Below. See the dates on their Myspace page. Download MP3: 40 Day Dream (Pitchfork gave the track a 6 out of 10)

Rainbow Arabia released some new music, Kabukimono, yesterday through Manimal Vinyl. Download MP3: Harlem Sunrise

And last, but not least, Aaron and Nikki from Amnion will be appearing on Penn & Teller: Bullshit! this weekend on Showtime. Those two are so nice and positive, they don’t deserve the mean-spiritedness of the show, but they’ve got a great attitude about it. Watch a clip HERE.

I’m sure I’m forgetting a million bands, sorry everybody……..
