Live Music Options: 5/30/11 - 6/5/11

Buffalo Springfield Again

The weekend gets pretty crazy...

Monday 5/30/11
[Pick of the Night] Vaud and the Villains / The Silver Lake Chorus / Paulie Pesh @ The Satellite (Free) – The Silver Lake Chorus should be good fun. They sing all the indie hits.
Maniac / Y Luv / Hello Vegas @ Bootleg (Free)
Taylor Locke & the Roughs / The Remainers / Carter Hulsey @ Silverlake Lounge (Free)
Emma Richardson / High Highs / Sarbetch Tucek @ Bardot (Free w/ RSVP)

Tuesday 5/31/11
[Pick of the Night] Stereo Total / Giant Drag / Batwings Catwings @ Echoplex ($12) - Fun band.
[Recommended] Hands / Oberhofer / Masxs @ The Satellite ($10) – Hands are classic soul inspired and feature “dueling keyboards” – a Hohner Clavinet and a Hammond (as well as bass guitar and drums). Pitchfork had some nice things to say about Oberhofer here.
Eternal Summers / The Beets / Seapony @ The Echo ($10) – Eternal Summers have toured with Best Coast and the Dum Dum Girls and sound a little like the Raincoats.
Lykke Li / Grimes @ The Wiltern (Sold Out)
The Lonely Wild / State to State / Marvelous Toy / Tizoc Estrada @ The Central (Free)
The Parlotones / The Daylights / Transfer @ Troubadour ($12)
Bruce Cockburn with Band / Jenny Scheinman @ El Rey ($35)
An Evening with Demetri Martin hosted by Jeff Garlin to Benefit the West Memphis 3 @ Largo ($15)
Ballerina Black / Secret Empire / Hell & Lula @ Silverlake Lounge ($8)

Seasons / Pony Village / Modern Time Machines / The Terrapin @ The Satellite (Free)
XXX Nite with Oriana Small aka Ashley Blue and Friends @ Largo ($20)
Earth, Wind & Fire 40th Anniversary Tour @ Nokia Theater LA Live ($50 - $130)

Arctic Monkeys / The Vaccines @ Fox Theater Pomona (Sold Out)

Manchester Orchestra / Sleeper Agent / Twilight Sleep @ The Music Box ($20)

Friday 6/3/11
[Pick of the Night] John Grant / Heidi Spencer / Sara Lov @ Largo ($25) – John Grant’s record popped up on a lot of top 10 lists. It’s a good, haunting, emotional, singer-songwriter record.
[Recommended] The Antlers / Little Scream @ El Rey ($20) – Pitchfork gave the new Antlers record best of new music and the All Music Guide said it was like a glossy, adult contemporary version of Deerhunter. I haven’t listened to it yet. The last one was just too depressing for me. Little Scream gets universal acclaim.
[Recommended] Archers of Loaf / The Globes @ Troubadour ($25) – Archers of Loaf reunion. Should please their fans. I heard they were good at Sasquatch.
Grouplove / Walk the Moon / Alex Walker @ The Satellite ($10) – Grouplove is a local band that’s beloved by the NME (and plenty of local folks too). I still haven’t heard much of their stuff.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. / Ema / Young Prisms @ The Echo ($12) – Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. have gotten some good buzz lately. Melodic indie rock.
Gayngs / Dirty Beaches @ Natural History Museum – Both of these bands have a passionate fanbase. The Gayngs record was a little too weird for me.
Arctic Monkeys / The Vaccines @ Hollywood Palladium ($43) - I have seen both of these bands.
Bootsy Collins @ Club Nokia ($21 - $50)
The 88 / Barcelona / Jenny O @ Hotel Café
X / Devil’s Brigade @ House of Blues Anaheim ($42)

Forts / Religious Girls / Tigerbitch / Combat! @ The Smell ($5)
Flogging Molly / The Drowning Men @ Fox Theater Pomona (Sold Out)
California Guitar Trio @ McCabe’s ($20)

Saturday 6/4/11
[Pick of the Week] Buffalo Springfield @ The Wiltern (Sold Out) – I was too cheap to buy tickets, but I really wish I was going.
[Recommended] Amor De Dias / Damon and Naomi / Bell Gardens @ The Satellite ($14) – Amor De Dias is Alasdair MacLean from the Clientele and Lupe Nunez-Fernandez of Pipas. If you like the Clientele, I think you’ll dig it.
[Recommended] Archers of Loaf / The Globes @ Troubadour (Sold Out) – Night two.
[Recommended] The Antlers / Little Scream @ Glass House ($15) – If you don’t want to deal with the museum earliness.

Top 10 LA Bands to See at SXSW

Everest

Top 10 LA Bands To See at SXSW (Official Showcases Only)

1) Radar Bros. at 9:00 PM on 3/18/10 @ Cedar Street Courtyard – This is the official Merge showcase (so you’re guaranteed to see some other great bands too) and it’s sort of the first official show with their new members. I caught a sneak peek last week at an art space and it sounded great. Their new album comes out the following Tuesday.
2) Everest at 1:00 AM on 3/17/10 @ Maggie Mae’s – Not only are they playing on a showcase with Pegi Young (Neil’s wife) but they’re a great underappreciated LA band. Their new record comes out in early April on Vapor Records.
3) The Henry Clay People at 8:30 PM on 3/18/10 @ Club de Ville – Not only is it an early showcase (so you can run off and catch some other stuff later) but they always put on an energetic, engaging set. Their new record comes out in June on TBD Records (home of Radiohead).
4) Admiral Radley at 8:45 PM on 3/19/10 at the Galaxy Room – Not only is this the first official show for these guys but the members come from other great bands (Aaron and Ariana from Earlimart and Jason and Aaron from Grandaddy).
5) Dengue Fever at 1:00 AM on 3/19/10 @ Encore Patio or at 11:00 PM on 3/20 at Emo’s Main Room – Dengue Fever are talented musicians who play Cambodian pop music.
6) Flying Lotus at 1:00 AM on 3/17/10 at The Phoenix – I’m not the world’s biggest fan of instrumental hip-hop music, but he transcends most of the stuff that’s out there.
7) Liars at 1:00 AM on 3/19/10 at Antone’s – Their music is a little more challenging than what I typically listen to, but I can’t deny its appeal.
8) Avi Buffalo at 11:00 PM at 3/18/10 at Galaxy Room Backyard – They’ve got some songs and they’re signed to Sub Pop but don’t quite have the stage presence yet (but it will come around eventually).
9) Dum Dum Girls at 12:00 AM on 3/18/10 at Galaxy Room Backyard – Of all the new girl groups with sort of questionable musical chops, they’re probably the best. Plus they’re signed to Sub Pop.
10) Off! At 9:45 PM on 3/18/10 at Emo’s Jr. – Keith Morris and Steven McDonald’s new band.

The Happy Hollows Monday Residency at Spaceland Starts This Week
Sorry for the lack of posts, thanks for sticking with me.
I caught Kris Kristofferson at the Walt Disney Concert Hall last night. You've got to be a fan of his poetry, because he's not a dynamic performer. That said, he's a legend and I was happy to see him for a second time. I've missed all the recent "secret" shows, but there are a few more this week...

Monday 11/2/09
[Pick of the Week] The Happy Hollows / Pepper Rabbit / Dirt Dress / Special Guests @ Spaceland (Free) – The Happy Hollows are doing the Monday night residency this month at Spaceland.
