Live Music Options: 8/2/10 - 8/8/10

White Arrows Do the Monday Night Residency at Spaceland
I forgot to mention how much I enjoyed seeing Phosphorescent last Tuesday at the Troubadour. The band was incredibly tight, so refreshing to see musicians with command over their instruments. It was compelling throughout (at first they played new songs with the studio arrangement, but also did extended jams, and even stripped down acoustic versions of older songs). If you're a fan of the records at all you need to see them on this tour.

The Happy Hollows Monday Residency at Spaceland Starts This Week
Sorry for the lack of posts, thanks for sticking with me.
I caught Kris Kristofferson at the Walt Disney Concert Hall last night. You've got to be a fan of his poetry, because he's not a dynamic performer. That said, he's a legend and I was happy to see him for a second time. I've missed all the recent "secret" shows, but there are a few more this week...

Monday 11/2/09
[Pick of the Week] The Happy Hollows / Pepper Rabbit / Dirt Dress / Special Guests @ Spaceland (Free) – The Happy Hollows are doing the Monday night residency this month at Spaceland. Should be packed. So who is the secret guest tonight? The rumor I’m hearing is that it’s Julian Casablancas of the Strokes. Anybody else know anything different?
[Recommended] The Blind Boy Paxton & Frank Fairfield Show @ Redwood
Vampire Weekend / Avi Buffalo @ Long Beach Art Theatre (Sold Out) – I like their first record, but just have zero desire to ever seen them. They played a secret show on Halloween in Chinatown and a free show yesterday in Boyle Heights.
Mississippi Man / Dietra Kruschev / Amanda Jo Williams / Shakey Graves @ Silverlake Lounge (Free)
White Rabbits / Glass Ghost / Local Natives @ El Rey ($17)
I.E. / Dicsobunny / Bastidas / Hello My Name is Red @ Pehrspace
Los Creepers / Rezurex / Viernes 13 @ Echoplex ($10)

Curt Smith of Tears for Fears / Michael Wainwright @ Hotel Café – Early show at 7PM
Marie Digby @ Hotel Café – Later show at 9:30 PM

Pop Noir / Nico Stai / Make Moon @ The Prospector in Costa Mesa (Free)

Tuesday 11/3/09

Port O’Brien / The Parson Red Heads / Evangelicals @ Echo ($12)

[Pick of the Night] Avi Buffalo / Bobb Bruno / Wildbunch @ Echo ($10) – Must be pretty good to be 19 and signed to Sub Pop. Aaron Embry had to cancel due to illness, but still get there early to see Bobb Bruno. He's one of the only guys who can open for Wilco, Fiona Apple, Jon Brion and Tweak Bird.
[Recommended] Dinosaur Jr. / Lou Barlow @ House of Blues Sunset ($28) – The new Dinosaur Jr. is well worth picking up. The Lou Barlow is good too.
[Recommended] Pixies / Black Gold @ Hollywood Palladium (Sold Out) – Night two of Doolittle.

Silversun Pickups on Letterman Tonight

Just a quick reminder to tune in to Letterman tonight. Silversun Pickups will be making their second appearance on the show.
Still no official LA date, but they seem to have a large gap on their schedule in September and October...

Silversun Pickups Swoon Debuts at Number Seven

Pretty, pretty good.
From Billboard:
Los Angeles-based indie rock band Silversun Pickups scored the only other debut in the top 50 as "Swoon" arrived at No. 7 with a career-high sales week of 43,000. The group's first release, 2006's "Carnavas," peaked at No. 80, and its best sales week came in March 2007 when it sold nearly 10,000.

Silversun Pickups at Stubbs

Standing in line at Stubbs, I was a little worried for the Silversun Pickups. As the two massive semis on Red River indicated, this was a Metallica show. If you still weren't sure the rumors were true, the first 150 people in line were in black Metallica shirts. As soon as the doors opened, the diehards sprinted to the front of the stage.

Bassnectar opened the show. I would see Girl Talk every day for the next five years if you promised me I would never have to see Bassnectar again. Mashing up the most obvious samples from Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, the Beatles. Ick. I couldn't tear my eyes away from the dreadlocked stagehand dancing in front of me and imagined that this must be what Burning Man is all about. Hell.

Stubbs was finally filling up by the time Silversun took the stage. Brian Aubert engaged the hardcore Metallica fans in front, telling them that how much he loved their devotion, and joked, "Don't worry, the Spin Doctors will be out shortly."

There was a good share of Silversun fans in the house. The band looked most comfortable with the old songs, but previewed four (that I remember) from the new record. Fans will be very happy. The crowd erupted when they started "Lazy Eye." Seeing Metallica's crowd respond to them so positively showed how much they've grown as a band.
