Live Music Options: 8/17/09 - 8/23/09

I made it out to the Henry Clay People circus on Friday and Le Switch's show at Spaceland on Saturday. The Henry Clay People had a lot of guests on a lot of covers and it was great to hear a bunch of new Switch songs.
This week is pretty stellar. Get off your couches....
Monday 8/17/09
[Pick of the Night] The Flaming Lips / Ghostland Observatory / Stardeath & White Dwarfs @ Greek Theatre ($44 - $55) – I broke up with the Flaming Lips a few years ago, but it’s impossible to ignore them. The new song is pretty good (haven’t heard the whole album yet).
[Recommended] Depeche Mode / Peter Bjorn and John @ Hollywood Bowl (Sold Out) – I had front row tickets to see Depeche Mode once back in the early 1990s. Great show.
[Recommended] Lower Heaven / Nic Jago / Miranda Lee Richards / The Meeting Places @ Silverlake Lounge (Free) – My favorite lineup of the Lower Heaven residency nights.
[Recommended] Clipse / Cool Kids @ House of Blues Sunset ($23) – Some of those skinny jeans hip hop kids.
[Recommended] Local Natives / Voxhaul Broadcast / Soko / The Lonely H @ Spaceland (Free) – Local Natives are packing them in every week.
The Growlers / Xu Xu Fang / Thelonious Monster @ The Echo (Free)

Neil Finn @ Largo (Sold Out)
Dawes @ Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa (Free)

Tuesday 8/18/09
[Pick of the Week] Elvis Costello and the Sugarcanes / Lucinda Williams @ Greek Theatre ($33 - $68) – Two legends. Pretty, pretty good.
[Recommended] The Minor Canon / Blank Blue / The Grownup Noise / Justin Janer Quartet @ Spaceland ($5) – I’m a huge fan of the Minor Canon. I like Blank Blue as wel…
[Recommended] Jay Reatard @ Amoeba Music (Free) – 6:00 PM – I recommend his new record.
[Recommended] The Flaming Lips / Ghostland Observatory / Stardeath & White Dwarfs @ Fox Theatre in Pomona ($42) – If you don’t mind driving out to Pomona…

Wednesday 8/19/09
[Pick of the Night] Club NME: Max Tundra @ Spaceland ($10) – Max Tundra’s past few records have gotten between 8.5 and 9.2 on Pitchfork. It’s glitchy, electronic but not completely inaccessible.
Emiliana Torrini / Anya Marina @ El Rey ($19) – Talented Icelandic singer.
Kenan Bell / Fitz and the Tantrums / The Futhamuckas / John Forte @ Troubadour ($5)
Great Northern @ Pershing Square (Free) – 7:00 PM

Thursday 8/20/09
[Pick of the Night] J Tillman / Evan Way / Big Search @ The Echo ($12) – The Fleet Foxes’ drummer makes his own music too.
[Recommended] Le Switch @ Cinema Bar in Culver City – It’s a tiny little bar, so if you’re in the neighborhood, it’s a fun place to go. Elliott Smith used to jump on stage every once in a while.
[Recommended] ZZ Top @ House of Blues Anaheim – The Aerosmith tour got cancelled, but you can still see ZZ Top.
Sylvain Sylvain / Angus Khan / The United Snakes / Adam Bones @ Knitting Factory ($15) – I was honestly never much of a New York Dolls fan, but a lot of you probably were. Angus Khan recently received some nice words from David Fricke.

Friday 8/21/09
[Pick of the Night] Steely Dan perform Aja @ Gibson Amphitheatre ($65 - $275) – I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m not a big fan of smooth music (whether it be jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, country, etc.). Steely Dan might be the exception. If you’re going to make really polished, smooth music, you should do it in the anally, precise way they did…
[Recommended] The Sonics / Prima Donna / Japanese Motors @ Echoplex ($24) – All time great garage rock band. “Strychnine” is a total jam. I’ve got some tickets to give away for this one.

I got out to the sat. show at spaceland as well, and i gotta say...I didn't dig 'The World Record.' However; Le Switch and Roadside Graves were great, thanks for pointing in the right direction.
