New Music Releases 10/30/07

Yeah, I realize this is two weeks late. But in the interest of being complete, here's what came out on October 30th. Only one release in the "most interesting" section this week.

Most Interesting New Releases:

Various Artists: I’m Not There Soundtrack (Sony) – This one’s worth picking up if you’re a Dylan fan or an indie rock fan. Thiry-four Dylan covers by Jim James, Sonic Youth, Cat Power, Eddie Vedder, Yo La Tengo, Iron & Wine/Calexico, Tweedy, Malkmus, Willie, and others. Yeah Yeah Yeah there are a few stinkers, but the quality of the recordings is high and it’s interesting to see how some of your favorite artists approach the material. A few artists decided they’d just try to sing it like Dylan, which wasn’t the best plan. I’m usually not a big fan of covers albums, but it works very well for Dylan, because I tend to like his songwriting better than I like his singing.

Other Noteworthy Releases:

Nicole Atkins: Neptune City (Columbia) – From the press release “at times vaudevillian, at others psychedelic; a little bit country, with a cabaret flair - all under a cloud of pop-noir. Her blend of melancholy lyrics over dreamy, theatrical compositions evokes comparisons to Rufus Wainwright, Jenny Lewis, and even Roy Orbison.”

Avenged Sevenfold: Avenged Sevenfold (Warner Bros.) – If you’re a teenager in the OC who works at the mall are you listening to this or are you listening to Justice and trying to sneak into Cinespace on a Tuesday night? I think it might be a toss-up at this point.

Ian Ball: Who Goes There (Dispensary) – One of the main guys in Gomez. This one’s apparently more piano/keyboard driven. He’s been playing a lot of solo shows around LA lately.

Buck 65: Situation (Strangefamousrecords) – Canadian hip-hopper.

Charalambides: Likeness (Kranky)

Eagles: Long Road Out of Eden – They released this exclusively through Wal-Mart and it still debuted #1 on the charts (over 700k sold).

Levon Helm: Dirt Farmer (Vanguard) – The Band never go out of style. There seems to be a rediscovery every few years. This is supposed to be a pretty good record.

Richard Lloyd: The Radiant Monkey (Parasol) – Television never go out of style. There seems to be a rediscovery every few years. This is supposed to be a pretty good record. Tom Verlaine seems to get a lot of the credit, but Lloyd’s right up there with him.

David Lynch & Angelo Badalementi: Twin Peaks Season 2 Soundtrack (Absurda/Lynch) – I used to have an upstairs neighbor who would play the Twin Peaks soundtrack about 16 times a day. I wouldn’t to jam some noiseless curtain rods up his ass a few times for that.

The Pillbugs: Monclovia (Rainbow Quartz)

Puscifier: V Is For Vagina (Pucifier Ent) – Side project from Maynard of Tool.

Sally Shapiro: Disco Romance (Paper Bag Records)

Britney Spears: Blackout (Jive)

Various Artists: Control Soundtrack (Rhino) – Not just Joy Division, but New Order, the Killers, VU, the Buzzcocks, etc. I hear the film’s good if you go into it knowing it’s a bio on Ian Curtis.

Various Artists: 30 Days of Night Soundtrack (Ipecac) - Brian Reitzell (Redd Kross) did the score.
Saul Williams: The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust (Fader) – Available from his website for either free or a $5 contribution. Produced by Trent Reznor.

Ticket Giveaway: Film School @ Echoplex

I've got one pair of tickets to giveaway for the Film School show at the Echoplex this Thursday night. The Whigs / Wild Sweet Orange / Le Switch @ Spaceland – The Aquarium Drunkard presents this show. The Whigs were named one of Rolling Stone’s 10 bands to watch in 2006. They’ve got a new album coming out on ATO early next year. Wild Sweet Orange have a new EP that came out last Tuesday. Download Wild Sweet Orange’s “Wrestle with God”

Spiritualized / Simple Kid @ Vista Theatre ($37) – Anybody go last night?

Emma Pollock / American Music Club / Two Sheds @ the Echo ($12) – Emma Pollock, the former Delgados singer, has a new album and it’s good.

Black Dice / No Age / Mika Miko @ Echoplex ($12) – Black Dice are experimental Brooklynites who are now on Paw Tracks. The LA Weekly has a feature on them this week. Opening the show are a couple of the better known bands from the Smell scene. You can read the article that Sasha Frere-Jones wrote about the Smell cene for the New Yorker HERE (both bands will be playing the Smell on Sunday if you’d rather seem them in their natural habitat).

Sondre Lerche @ Troubadour ($20) – Night two. He’s got a new album out (the soundtrack to Dan In Real Life).

Pieta Brown / Robert Francis @ Silverlake Lounge – He learned guitar from John Frusciante and has played with Ry Cooder. Pieta Brown appeared on Morning Becomes Eclectic this morning.

The Softlightes / Dead Ponies / We Are Barbarians / Asher @ Spaceland (Free) – The Softlightes are the resident band. They play catchy, electro-pop. I like the Dead Ponies.

Spiritualized / Simple Kid @ Vista Theatre ($37) – They’re generally an amazing live band, but I was hesitant to buy tickets because this tour is billed as “Acoustic Mainlines.” It promises strings and gospel singers. They’re the type of band where I prefer to be blown away by the sound waves. Also tomorrow.

Feist / Spoon @ Gibson Amphitheatre ($30) – The only thing that drives me more insane than hearing Feist’s “1, 2, 3, 4” coming from my TV is hearing that newer iPhone commercial with C.S.S.
