Unfortunately I haven't gotten too deep into any of these releases yet. A few of them sound promising though...
Releases That Got My Attention:
Adele: 21 (Columbia) – The winner of 2009’s Grammy for best new artist releases her second album. At the Palladium on 6/9/11. Listen HERE
Julianna Barwick: The Magic Place (Asthmatic Kitty) – For fans of pretty, ethereal, vocal records.
Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy & Cairo Gang: Island Brothers (Drag City) – Latest 10” single.
The Caribbean: Discontinued Perfume (Hometapes) – Sixth album from the indie rockers.
Johnny Cash: Bootleg Volume 2 – From Memphis to Hollywood (Sony Legacy) – 57-track collection with 16 never issued recordings, 11 singles, 11 outtakes. Listen HERE
The Cave Singers: No Witch (Jagjaguwar) – Third record from the “rustic” “backwoods” bluesy band with the singer with the love it or hate it voice. At the Autry on 3/13/11. Listen HERE
Danielson: Best of Gloucester County (Sounds Familyre) – It’s been five years since Ships. This one features guest appearances from Jens Lekman and Sufjan Stevens. At the Satellite on 4/9/11.
David Dondero: A Pre-Existing Condition (Ghostmeat) – Some originals and lots of covers (including Little Feat, Charlie Pride, Neil Young, Doug Sahm, Dylan and Jawbreaker).
Eagle and Talon: In Manila (Bi/Akka) – Local band alert
Earth: Angels of Darkness Demons of Light 1 (Southern Lord) – One of the more critically adored heavy bands. Getting good reviews.
The Flying Burrito Brothers: Authorized Bootleg – Fillmore East 11/7/70 (Hip-O) – I haven’t listened to this yet, but this is post Gram Parsons. It’s still a prime band and they play all the songs you’d want to hear.
Gil-Scott Heron & Jamie xx: We’re New Here (XL Recordings) – Jamie from the xx reworks Gil-Scott Heron’s I’m New Here record. Interesting idea to put these two artists together.
Light Asylum: In Tension (self-released) – New York critical darlings. Cold, steely, Depeche Mode meets Ian Curtis (P.S. that’s a woman singing).
MP3: Dark Allies (via Pitchfork)
Loch Lomond: Little Me Will Start A Storm (Tender Loving) – Folk influenced indie music from Portland.
The Low Anthem: Smart Flesh (Nonesuch) – Americana fans take note. At the Autry on 5/9/11.
The Luyas: Too Beautiful To Work (Dead Oceans) – I try to listen to everything on the Dead Oceans label (but haven’t gotten around to this yet). Tied in with the Montreal scene (Owen Pallett, Sarah Neufeld and Bell Orchestre help out). At the Autry on 3/23/11.
Malachai: Return To the Ugly Side (Domino) – Eclectic Bristol duo touches on pretty much ever genre. Geoff Barrow Listen HERE
Medication: Judgment Day EP (Sacred Bones) – Lo-fi indie rock mang.
Brad Mehldau: Live In Marciac (Nonesuch) – Local jazz pianist does original material and covers Nick Drake, Radiohead, Nirvana and The Beatles. At Largo on 4/14/11.
Dustin O’Halloran: Lumiere (Fat Cat) – You like Devics?
The Psychic Paramount: II (No Quarter) – Experimental New York band with the drummer from one of my favorite college bands, Panel Donor. Haven’t heard it yet.
Puro Instinct: Headbangers In Ecstasy (Mexican Summer) – Local sisters. Gorilla vs. Bear loves this. The cover is like the American Apparel of album covers.
Sister Crayon: Bellow (Manimal) – Female fronted group with a Portishead meets CocoRosie vibe.
Six Organs of Admittance: Asleep On the Floodplain (Drag City) – Some groovy acoustic guitar playing (as usual).
Slug Guts: Howling Gang (Sacred Bones) – Aussies with a bit of a Birthday/Mudhoney vibe.
Toro Y Moi: Underneath the Pine (Carpark) – Best new music on Pitchfork (if that sorta thing impress ye). Expands on his chillwave sound, but still not my bag baby. At the Troubadour on 3/23/11.
Various Artists: Blue Valentine Soundtrack (Lakeshore) – Mostly Grizzly Bear stuff.
Various Artists: West Indies Funk (Trans Air) – Another cool compilation worth tracking down.
