Live Music Options 5/26 - 5/29

Voxtrot play the Wiltern on Friday
Friday 5/26/06
Silversun Pickups / Voxtrot / Elefant @ Wiltern ($20) – Silversun Pickups are getting ready to release their debut full-length, Carnavas, on Dangerbird Records on July 11th. The people who’ve heard it say it’s really good and that they’ve outdone their EP. Austin’s Voxtrot put out one of my favorite EPs earlier this year. They write infectious early 80s, Smiths-style rock. Download Voxtrot’s “Mothers, Sisters, Daughters and Wives

Daedelus / Nobody & Mystic Chords of Memory / Mia Doi Todd @ Little Temple ($10) – This is another benefit for Keith Tamashiro. Listen to Nobody & Mystic Chords of Memory’s “Coyote’s Song (When You Hear it Too)” Download Mia Doi Todd’s “Planting

Talib Kweli @ Conga Room ($25) – I was really impressed when I saw him at Coachella a few years ago. He was also in Black Star of course.

Slow Signal Fade / Circus Minor @ Spaceland (?) – This is the Slow Signal Fade’s record release show before they head out on the road for a couple of weeks. I’ve written about Circus Minor before.

Eels / Smoosh @ Roxy ($25) – See last Thursday’s write-up. Download Smoosh’s “Find a Way

Jimmy Tamborello / John Tejada @ Getty (Free) – Plug Research guys. You also know JT from Dntel and Postal Service.

T.I.@ House of Blues (Both shows sold out) – Big rap star.

One Self @ Echo ($12) -

Saturday 5/27/06
The Shakes / Peach Fuzz / Thee Makeout Party @ Lava Lounge ($5) – A Jim Freek party! Upbeat garage pop.

Mobb Deep @ House of Blues ($30) – They haven’t sold out the House of Blues? Crazy.

Mika Miko / Shoplifting @ the Smell ($5) – Download Shoplifting’s “Male Gynecology

The New Amsterdams @ Troubadour ($9.99 adv / $12 dos) – They started as a Get Up Kids side project in my college town.

West Indian Girl @ Spaceland ($10)

Sunday 5/28/06
Gogogo Airheart / Indian Jewelry @ the Echo (Free) – Download GoGoGo Airheart’s “Double Bummer

Winter Flowers / Kind Hearts & Coronets @ Tangier ($5) – Catch a couple of local bands.

Monday 5/29/06
400 Blows / The Bronx @ Spaceland (Free) – See two aggressive local bands. 400 Blows are in your face, abrasive rock. I’ve written about The Bronx before.

Mono / Pelican / Tarentel @ Troubadour ($12.50 adv / $14 dos) – Mono’s kind of like a Japanese version of Mogwai. Download Mono’s “The Flames Beyond the Cold Mountain” Chicago’s Pelican are “instro-sorcerers” and they’re on that recent Invaders compilation. San Francisco’s Tarentel are instrumental too, but more Eno-influenced (according the All Music Guide).
