Mercury Rev Plays El Rey on TuesdayAll in all, given the proximity to the holidays, it’s a really good week for shows. I’ve been scattered and busy, and haven’t seen many shows.
But I did see Oasis in Las Vegas on December 6th. I’ve never considered myself a huge fan, but they sounded great. The Pearl Theater at the Palms is a great place to see a show. With a capacity of about 2,800, there’s not a bad seat in the house. Great sightlines and sound. I only saw enough of Ryan Adams to be reminded what a pissy little brat he is, but his band sounded good and he played one of his best songs, “Come Pick Me Up.” There were a lot of people out in front of the show just giving away tickets. So if you’re ever in Vegas, and somebody you like is playing there, you might swing by there around show time and get lucky.
This past Friday night I journeyed down to Brixton in Redondo Beach to see Leon Russell. Almost everybody there was at least 15 years older than me, so it was a little bit of weird scene. We got asked to move a few times, because we had the audacity to stand in front of the stage (all the chairs were occupied). This led to a lot of people dragging their bar stools up on the dance floor to try to get around us. Russell had a strong band, but his set list skipped over some originals I would have liked to hear in favor of covers by many of the bands he’s played with over the years. Glad I got see him though…

Brixton? There's a venue in Redondo Beach?
yeah - who the hell knew. seemed to be a lot of nostalgia acts - eddie money, berlin, etc....the sound wasn't bad, bottled beers were $6, cover was kind of steep, held about 450 people i think.
