Thursday Night Music Options 5/3/07

Califone Play the Malibu Performing Arts Center Tonight

This took a while. There’s just way too much going on tonight.

Tivo Alert: The Broken West have a song featured in tonight’s episode of “Grey’s Anatomy”
Tonight's Pick:
Califone / Eric Johnson (of the Fruit Bats) / The One Am Radio @ Malibu Performing Arts Center ($20) – If it weren’t for traffic I would definitely hit this show. It’s a great lineup and probably a great venue. Califone play mellow music that’s informed by blues and folk but expand on it, creating intricately nuanced albums that are always interesting. I love the last two Fruit Bats albums and would love to hear the lead singer play solo. Download Califone’s “3 Legged Animals
Also Intriguing:
The Parson Red Heads / The Lisps / Acute @ Silverlake Lounge – This is the record release party for Acute. Kevin Bronson at the LA Times wrote a nice piece about them today in his Buzz Bands column. Dave Trumfio produced their new record. Download The Lisps’ “Pepper Spray
Elf Power / The Moon Upstairs / Wonderground @ Spaceland ($8) – Elf Power is a later stage Elephant 6 band. They always have at least three or four great tracks on each album. “Old Tyme Waves” was a mixtape favorite of mine for years.
Memphis / The Postmarks @ Troubadour ($15) – The Postmarks have a female vocalist and play the breathy indie-pop along the lines of Ivy, Bossa Nova or 1960s French pop. They’ve got solid indie cred. Not too familiar with Memphis, but they seem like something I might like. Maybe along the lines of the Clientele? Damn all these Canadians.
Circle Jerks / 400 Blows @ EchoPlex – Part of the Silver Lake Film Festival. There’s a screening of the Slog Movie at 7:30 followed by these performances. The Slog Movie is a film shot mostly on super 8 in 1981 by a guy deep into the LA hardcore music scene.
Autolux / Midnight Movies / The Pity Party @ Glasshouse in Pomona ($14) – I’ve somehow never managed to see Autolux. Probably the most popular LA band I can say that about. I want to see them, I just haven’t. Unkle just remixed them and a collaboration will be featured on the new Unkle record. Pomona’s not a bad drive, took me about 35 minutes for last week’s JAMC show. Remember it’s a dry venue and the bar across the street closed.
Linda Ronstadt with the Gay Men’s Chorus @ USC’s Bovard Auditorium ($25-100) – She’s got more classics than you.
Not As Knowledgable About These:
Tim Finn @ Largo - Founder of Split Enz, left for solo career and then joined brother’s band, Crowded House
You Me and Iowa @ the Echo (Free)
