Lil Wayne seems to be getting the best reviews of the week. Other than what I've highlighted, Sloan, Supergrass and Robert Pollard are the most intriguing.....
Albums Released on 6/10/08:
Records I've Heard:
Priscilla Ahn: A Good Day (Blue Note) – Part of the Hotel CafĂ© scene. I don’t listen to a lot of female singer-songwriters, but she’s young, attractive and she’s got a nice voice. It’s a very mellow record. Beck’s Odelay-era backing band appears on a lot of the record (Joey Waronker recorded a lot of it).
My Morning Jacket: Evil Urges (ATO) – Each year, a couple of your favorite artists release confounding albums. Evil Urges is my candidate for disappointment of the year (so far). By the end of the third song, you’re asking yourself what kind of shitty street crack made Jim James think he could sing like Prince. Then “I’m Amazed” comes on and you think you might be back in business. Then the gag reflex kicks in again (for a totally different reason) when “Thank You Too!” comes on. Then you get about four passable songs and you figure you might as well just delete the whole thing off of your MP3 player. But then “Look at You” and “Aluminum Park” remind you why you liked the band in the first place. Most critics seem to dig it. It’s got a 73 on Metacritic. At the Greek Theatre on 9/21/08.
On My Shopping List:
Gene Clark: Silverado ’75 – Live and Unreleased (Collector’s Choice) – The very first official release of a Clark solo show. From a 1975 concert in Colorado.
Emmylou Harris: All I Intended To Be (Nonesuch) – Emmylou’s one of my favorite female vocalists of all time. This record’s loaded with guests.
