Sinking Radio - The Sea and Cake's "Car Alarm"

This is my reminder to tune in to Sinking Radio with Sylvia, Todd and Matt on Little Radio. The show airs from Noon to 2:00 PM on Friday. They've got guests tomorrow, and they're from France.

Each week on the show, they feature an official You Set the Scene pick. My pick for tomorrow's show is "Car Alarm" by The Sea and Cake. The song comes from the band's new album, Car Alarm, which comes out October 21st on Thrill Jockey. For some reason, The Sea and Cake has always seemed like a really serious band. But this new album's really light and refreshing to listen to. They experiment with new sounds and it feels like they had a lot of fun making it.

I've been a big Sea and Cake fan since going to college in the Midwest in the mid-1990s. Friends in college turned me on to the Sea and Cake due to their Kansas City connection (Archer Prewitt was a member of the Coctails, who got their start in KC). There's always been a strong Chicago/University of Kansas connection, and I got into other Thrill Jockey, Drag City and Touch & Go bands too. And you can't forget Smashing Pumpkins, Urge Overkill and Wilco.

So what's up with the Chicago scene these days? I'm obviously really into a lot of LA bands, and you can't ignore Brooklyn, Austin, Seattle and (even) Baltimore. But who are the bands coming out of Chicago? I'm probably overlooking some great bands, so feel free to add them to the comments section....

Guests from France? Unless they're going to talk about wine or food I don't think it will make for compelling radio.

Wilco's a St. Louis band, brother. They just pretend like they're from Chicago, now, but they grew up in South City and Belleville.

actually, you're wrong scotty J. Just cause they played their first show in St. Louis doesn't make them a St. Louis band. Not calling them a Chicago band is like insisting Muhammad Ali's name is Cassius Clay.

i always think of Uncle Tupelo as the St. Louis band (although, you could say Belleville) and Wilco as a Chicago band.
