Over a week behind on this....
Noteworthy Albums Released on 9/30/08:
Dungen: 4 (Kemado) – While I’ve heard they draw somewhat heavily from early Swedish pysch rock ‘n’ roll, they sound unique to me. The Swedes’ fourth record is their most group oriented effort yet. Gustav Ejstes moves behind the piano and limits the flute solos. The album has a mellower vibe than the last two, with more emphasis on the free jazz; but they do manage to rock out a couple of times. Of the ten songs, five are instrumentals with the rest, as always, sung in Swedish. Recommended. At the Echo on 11/2/08
MP3: Sat Att Se
Ben Folds: Way to Normal (Epic) – I’ve never been a fan, but I listened to this one. His sense of humor definitely comes through, but I don’t have any real context to place it within. At the Wiltern on 11/14/08
Rademacher: Era EP (Jaxart) – Fresno’s classic indie rockers release a four song digital EP through Jax’s label. It’s another solid effort. See them at the Echo every Monday in October.
MP3: If U Know
Local Releases:
Le Switch: And Now…Le Switch (Autumn Tone) – I wrote the preview/press release for this back in March and it’s finally available worldwide (digitally). Old school fools like me can order the CD through Autumn Tone’s website. To paraphrase myself, it’s soulful early 1970s inspired rock ‘n’ roll. Recommended. See them at The Echo on 10/20/08
MP3: Pristine
MP3: Give Me Something
Restavrant: Return to the Tomb of Guiliano Medidici (Narnack) – A fun, lo-fi punk blues record that goes well with cheap beer. See them at the Redwood Bar on 10/15/08.
MP3: Joe D
The Western States Motel: Painted Birds Flying in the Orange Mirror Sun (Firebird Field Recordings) – These guys just announced that they’re doing the Spaceland residency in November. Available digitally.
