New Releases 4/15/08 and Record Store Day 4/19/08

Don’t forget that this Saturday is Record Store Day. Amoeba will be celebrating with guest DJs all day. Daniel Ash & David J (2:00 PM), the Donnas (3:00 PM), and Peanut Butter Wolf (4:00 PM). There will also be exclusive releases from artists like: Josh Ritter, Death Cab for Cutie, R.E.M., Gnarls Barkley, Built to Spill, The Breeders, The Black Keys, Vampire Weekend and Stephen Malkmus. And Amoeba's not the only record store carrying new releases. Don’t forget about Freakbeat in Sherman Oaks, Fingerprints in Long Beach and Rhino in Claremont. Fingerprints has Rob Halford doing a signing at 4:00 PM, Limbeck doing an acoustic performance at 6:30 PM and Silversun Pickups doing an acoustic performance at 8:00 PM. You need to get on the guest list for these performances (you should be signed up for Fingerprints newsletter).

Records Released on 4/15/08:

Things I’ve Heard:
The Kooks: Konk (Astralwerks) – These days, I find that I don’t particularly like a lot of British bands. I still like Radiohead and Spiritualized, but they’ve been around forever. Come to think of it, Bloc Party might be my favorite British band of the past few years. Anyway, the Kooks are a perfectly decent British band that is able to sell out the Wiltern on 5/19.
Jordan Zevon: Insides Out (New West) – This is Warren Zevon’s son. It’s a super poppy record.

Local Interest:
The Brian Jonestown Massacre: My Bloody Underground (a Recordings) – I don’t think Anton’s spending much time in LA these days, but I’ll still call them a local band. Some of the song titles: “Bring Me the Head of Paul McCartney on Heather Mill’s Wooden Peg Dropping Bombs on the White House),” “We Are the Ni**as of the World,” “Just Like Kicking Jesus,” “Automatic Fa**ot For the People.”

Other Noteworthy New Releases:
American Princes, Joseph Arthur EP (mp3), Black Francis, Mariah Carey, Does It Offend You Yeah? [at El Rey on 5/1], Frightened Rabbit, Jason Isbell live, James McMurtry, M83 [Echoplex on 5/20], Ours, Phantom Planet, Robert Pollard EP, Tristan Prettyman, Sally Shapiro remix (mp3), Thrice [Avalon on 5/29 & 5/30]

Reissues:
Air: Moon Safari
Can: Future Days
Can: Monster Movie
Whiskeytown: Strangers Almanac expanded on vinyl
