Great Northern Play the Silverlake Lounge Tonight
Gruff Rhys / Her Space Holiday @ Jensen Rec Center ($14) – A pretty intimate gig with the lead singer of Super Furry Animals. He’s touring in support of his latest solo record (sung in English). I wasn’t super impressed with it but it’s not bad. Light and poppy.
Datarock / Foreign Born @ the Echo ($14) – Datarock are a Norwegian dance-rock band that’s known for wearing red track suits. I got a copy of their CD and made it to the Revenge of the Nerds quoting third track before turning it off. Foreign Born’s a local anthemic indie band that seems to good to be touring with Datarock, but maybe I’m just out of touch with the kids.
Mark Ronson @ El Rey ($20) – Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse’s producer. His new album’s another one where I only made it through about three tracks. That Stop Me Medley was just too upsetting.
They Might Be Giants @ Avalon ($25) – The original nerd rockers. Without them would the Decemberists exist?
Club NME: The Screening @ Spaceland – The Screening are a British band in town to play Club NME tonight (early) and Club Moscow at Boardner’s (late). They’ll be guests on Sinking with Sylvia (and Sometimes Todd) on Little Radio tomorrow at 11:00 AM.
Mostly Bears @ the Good Hurt
Stephen Kellogg @ Knitting Factory
Secret Society of the Sonic Six @ Bordello ($10)
Bob Schneider / AM @ Hotel CafĂ© (Sold Out) – I bet this show will be 90% Austinites.
Kind Hearts & Coronets @ Mr. T’s Bowl
Filter’s Revenge of the Sunset Strip: DJ Andy Smith / Troublemaker / J-Logic @ the Roxy ($10) – Andy Smith from Portishead.
Asher @ Tangier
The Division Day record release party was a lot of fun last night. Great to see such a big turnout with so many familiar faces. They sounded tight and well rehearsed and ready for their tour and New York City residency.
Tonight's Pick:
Great Northern / Downtown Union / The Health Club / Teenage Frames @ Silverlake Lounge ($7) – A special “secret show” from Great Northern before heading out on tour with Robbers on High Street. Their debut album was released earlier this year on Eenie Meenie and since then they’ve impressed local audiences and gotten tons of play on Indie 103.
