Live Music Options 7/10 - 7/13

I caught the Rentals on Friday at the Fonda and Sonic Youth on Saturday at the Little Radio Warehouse. I’ll try to write fuller reviews later this week.

Monday 7/10/06
The Lilys @ the Echo ($12) – Apparently the show is free after 10:00 PM but it starts at 7:00 PM. The Lilys started out as shoegazer band, then became a mid-to-late 1960’s British-inspired band (my favorite period) and lately play more psychedelic stuff. Apparently their most recent record was better than the one before it. I’ve seen them put on some really good shows and some shows where I wasn’t sure if the lead singer was even on the same planet.

Pearl Jam / Sonic Youth @ the Forum (Sold Out) – Sonic Youth was good this weekend at the Little Radio Warehouse.

Monsters are Waiting @ Troubadour (Free / $3 under 21) – Fresh off their monthly residency at Spaceland.

Darker My Love @ Spaceland (Free) – I only caught one song at their show last week, but it sounded much more rocking than their forthcoming record on Dangerbird Records.

LL Cool J @ House of Blues (Sold Out) – Anybody see Last Holiday? Me neither. I got a copy of the new record, listened to it once and forgot about.

Tuesday 7/11/06
The Sword @ Spaceland ($8 adv / $10 dos) – They’re my favorite of the new heavy bands (Wolfmother, Priestess, Early Man). Very tight live band and the record is worth picking up too.

Cut Chemist @ Amoeba 7:00 PM (Free) – You may know him from Ozomatli or Jurassic 5 or his work with DJ Shadow. Apparently he’s got a new record out with a lot of guest spots on it.

Bedroom Walls / Division Day @ El Cid ($8) – Bedroom Walls are a local band that plays “romanticore” and they got a really good rating from the All Music Guide. Division Day are the nicest guys around.

Gliss @ Viper Room (?) – Local guys.

Soul Asylum @ Troubadour ($20) – I liked these guys back in 1988. “Sometime to Return” was a great song.

Nickel Creek @ House of Blues ($25) – Bluegrass kids.

Wednesday 7/12/06
The Lilys @ Spaceland ($12) – If you miss them at the Echo on Monday….

Halou / Annie Stela @ Troubadour – Female KCRW style rock.

Vans Warped Tour @ Dodger Stadium – Helmet’s still a band.

Sonic Youth / Pearl Jam @ Henry Fonda Theatre (Sold Out) – I think you have to win tickets on KROQ.

Thursday 7/13/06
Matt Costa / Watson Twins @ Troubadour (Sold Out) – Also sold out on Friday. The Watson Twins help Jenny Lewis put on a great show and also put out quality music themselves...

Anya Marina @ Hotel Café – She’s well known in San Diego and playing the Hotel Café every Thursday in July. KCRW-style singer-songwriter.

Watkins Family Hour @ Largo ($10) – Two of the kids from Nickel Creek.
