Live Music Options 7/31/06 - 8/2/06

I don't think any of this stuff is going to get me out of the house this week. I was very impressed with Mike Therieau at El Cid on Friday. He's got a very good voice.

Monday 7/31/06
Beth Orton @ Avalon ($25) – Do you miss Jim O’Rourke now that he’s out of Wilco and Sonic Youth? Well, he produced Beth Orton’s last record.

Crosby Stills Nash & Young @ Hollywood Bowl – I just looked and you can still get some of the $187.50 tickets. That’s totally outrageous.

Darker My Love @ Spaceland (Free) – The last night of their month long residency.

Alexi Murdoch @ the Troubadour ($17 adv / $20 dos) – He’s a mellow singer-songwriter but I haven’t heard him.

Tuesday 8/1/06
Bedroom Walls / Listing Ship @ Tangier ($8) – Local mellow rockers.

Manu Chao / Kinky @ Shrine (Sold Out) – I just read that Latin music is the only genre that has experienced sales increases this year.

Wednesday 8/2/06
Hot Chip @ The Troubadour (Sold Out) – Hipster indie electronica on the DFA label. I find it boring, but a lot of friends seem to like it.

Panic! At the Disco / Dresden Dolls @ Wiltern (Sold out) – Young Vegas band sells out the Wiltern.

Plastilina Mosh @ Knitting Factory ($20) – More Mexican dance music.

News from the Internet

Local buzz band Cold War Kids signed to Gnarls Barkley’s label (Downtown). They’re part of the Warner Music family. It's probably time to pick up all those self released EPs before they go out of print.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah just announced two local dates. They’ll be appearing at the Henry Fonda Theatre on October 14th and 15th. Presale tickets go on sale at 10:00AM on Wednesday through Musictoday. You may remember that I was disappointed when I saw them at the El Rey last year although I do recommend their album.

Weekend Music Options

I watched the new Luna documentary last night on DVD. If you're a Luna fan, then you'll definitely enjoy it. If you're a young kid who thinks you'll be a big star if you get signed to a major label and sell 100k records, then it might be eye opening.

I'll probably check out El Cid tonight and then swing by Spaceland on my home. Both are different, but very solid lineups. Spaceland has a good lineup tomorrow night too.

Friday 7/28/06
Mike Therieau / Kings and Queens of Jackson Street / Kip Boardman @ El Cid ($8) – This is the local album release party for San Francisco’s Mike Therieau. He’s kinda like a country soul singer/1970s singer-songwriter. Kings and Queens of Jackson Street includes Jason Moore, Mike Stinson and Josh Schwartz (Beachwood Sparks, Further). Kip Boardman also kinda sounds like a 1970's singer-songwriter.

The Avengers / Mika Miko / The Checkers @ Spaceland ($12) - Three female fronted punk rock bands. The Avengers are original 1970's style. Mika Miko is a local band celebrating the release of their new album on Kill Rock Stars (1990's style). The Checkers have a 1980's punk style.

Brightblack Morning Light @ Troubadour ($12) - I've listened to their new album a few times. It's pretty good but very mellow (like an even more stoned Spiritualized without the gigantic recording budget). If you miss this show they'll be opening for Mojave 3 at McCabe's in October.

The Velvet Teen / Division Day @ Knitting Factory ($10) – In the front room.

The Bird & the Bee / Pop Levi @ Tangier ($10) - The Bird & the Bee is Inara George and Greg Kurstin. Pop Levi used to be in Ladytron.

The Coup @ Knitting Factory ($12)

Steve Wynn @ McCabe’s - Speaking of Luna, Steve Wynn was in Dream Syndicate (who Luna covered). They had a handful of great songs.

Saturday 7/29/06
Irving / Say Hi To Your Mom @ the Echo 4:00PM ($8) - It's an early barbeque show. Irving has been playing a lot lately.

David Pajo / Dirty on Purpose @ Spaceland ($8) - David Pajo was in Slint. That should be enough to get you out to the show. I saw him perform at the Elliott Smith tribute show and he was surprisingly compelling alone. Brooklyn's Dirty on Purpose just put out a new record. I like it. It reminds me (and a lot of other people) of Yo La Tengo.

Mika Miko @ the Smell ($5) - If you miss them at Spaceland on Saturday.

Sparta @ the Troubadour (Sold Out)

Darker My Love / Midnight Movies / The Antarticans @ Little Radio - Quality local music.

Sunday 7/30/06
Hello Astronaut, Goodbye Television @ the Echo (Free) - Does it seem like most of the people attending Part Time Punks sit on the back patio and totally ignore the bands?

Thursday, July 27, 2006

Live Music Options 7/27/06

None of this stuff is getting me out of the house tonight.

Sleepy Jackson @ Amoeba 7:00 PM (Free)

Cat Power @ McCabe's 9:00PM (sold out) & 11:00PM ($26.50) - She's talented and supposedly she's gotten to be a pretty good live performer.

Lisa Germano / Tom Brosseau @ Largo (?)

Magic Christian @ Viper Room ($12) - Ex-Flamin' Groovies

Anya Marina @ Hotel Cafe

Wednesday Night Music

D'oh. Never got around to posting about what was going on last night. I went to the Silversun Pickups' listening party at Sea Level and then over to Malo for their record label party. Both events were nice and crowded. Lots of CDs flew out the door.

Here's what's happening tonight:
Buzzcocks @ The Fonda ($18) - Great British punk band. If you don't have Singles Going Steady pick it up immediately. While they did peak in the late 1970s, it would probably still be fun to see them.

The Tyde / Sleepy Jackson @ Troubadour ($14) - I really like The Tyde. They're a local band but probably more popular in England than here. They're new album's already out overseas, but you'll have to wait until 8/29 for the domestic release. I've never actually heard Sleepy Jackson, but I know people dig him. The All Music Guide says they're heavily influenced by George Harrison. That can't be all bad.

Craig Wedren @ Safari Sam's ($5) - I used to like Shudder To Think. I haven't listened to them in a really long time, but I know this guy's done some indie film scoring recently.

New Release Tuesday 7/25/06

I'll try to fill in the local appearances and more descriptions when I get a chance. For now I recommend the Silversun Pickups new record and the Spoon reissues (if you don't already have them).

Adam Green: Jacket Full of Danger (Rough Trade) – I’ve never had patience for this guy.

Alan Sparhawk: Solo Guitar – The main dude from Low plays guitar. Probably only for hardcore instrumental guitar fans.

Ali Farka Toure: Savane (Nonesuch) – For the world music/Buena Vista Social Club fans.

Anavan: Anavan (GSL) - Reissue

Archie Bronson Outfit: Derdang Derdang (Domino) – Domestic Release

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians: Stranger Things (Fantasy) – Their first album in like 16 years.

Erase Errata: Nightlife (Kill Rock Stars)

Excepter: Alternation (5 Rue Christine)

Ghostface Killah: Live In New York City (Full Clip Media) – Live album

Harvey Danger: Little by Little... (Kill Rock Stars) – Lots of poppy piano

Joan Of Arc: Eventually, All At Once (Polyvinyl) – Collects all their Japanese bonus tracks

John Doe: For the Best of Us (Yep Rock) – Reissue of his 1998 EP with some bonus tracks.

Jurassic 5: Feedback (Interscope) – Backpack rappers

The Knife: Silent Shout (Mute) – Domestic release

The Long Winters: Putting The Days To Bed (Barsuk)

Mark Fosson: The Lost Takoma Sessions (Drag City)

Midlake: The Trials of Van Occupanther (Bella Union) – Dallas band. Jason Lee’s a big fan.

Mika Miko: C.Y.S.L.A.B.F. (Kill Rock Stars) – Local all girl punk band.
Motor: Klunk (Mute)

New York Dolls: One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This (Roadrunner) - It’s been over 20 years since their last album. I saw them at Spaceland recently and they’re really old.

Old Crow Medicine Show: Down Home Girl EP (Nettwerk)

Panda and Angel: Panda and Angel EP (Jade Tree)

Puffy AmiYumi: Splurge (Tofu) – Japanese girl band that you may know from their show on Cartoon Network or from the theme song to Teen Titans.

Rosewood Thieves: From Decker House EP (V2)

Say Hi To Your Mom: Impeccable Blahs (Rebel Group)

Silversun Pickups: Carnavas (Dangerbird) – This should be this local band’s breakout album. Definitely worth picking up, particularly if you like early 1990's rock bands like the Smashing Pumpkins. They're having a record release party at Sea Level in Echo Park tonight at 8:00PM (food and drinks and listening party).

The Sleepy Jackson: Personality (Astralwerks)

Spoon: Telephono & Soft Effects (remastered) (Merge) – Pretty good albums, worth picking up if you don’t already have them.

Tom Petty: Highway Companion (American)

Various Artists: Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man (soundtrack) (Verve)

Velvet Teen: Cum Laude (Slow Dance)

Venus Hum: The Colors of the Wheel (Nettwerk)

White Whale: WWI (Merge) – Matt Suggs’ from Butterglory’s new band. I used to love Butterglory.

Will Kimbrough: Americanitis (Emergent)

Flaming Lips at the Hollywood Bowl

Before I get all negative and crabby, let me start by saying that I did have fun last night at the Hollywood Bowl. That said, the Flaming Lips’ shtick felt really tired to me. Wayne Coyne trotted out the bubble, fake blood, mechanical bird, massive balloons and confetti (familiar to anyone who’s seen them over the past four years). The only major difference was that instead of furries, the stage was full of costumed Santas. It didn’t help that they played songs mostly off of their new album (a few from Yoshimi and maybe one from Soft Bulletin). The new album is the worst thing they’ve released since the 1980s. They’ve always been more about having a good time than actually giving great performances, but last night they just couldn’t hide behind the mediocre song selection and Wayne’s thrashed voice. Openers Os Mutantes sounded really good but it was hard to get in the mood at 7:00 PM when it’s 100 degrees outside (and the absence of Rita Lee was evident). Thievery Corporation was just awful, but most of the crowd seemed to enjoy it. The two main guys in the band stood in the back and acted like they were spinning records and/or queuing up music while the collection of musicians they assembled performed every world music cliché you can imagine. Tim Robbins’ character in High Fidelity would have loved it. Somewhat appropriately, Wayne and Steven came out for Thievery Corporation’s last song and immediately killed the crowd’s energy. I hate to admit it, but now that the Flaming Lips have fully embraced this hippie, jam crowd I don’t think I’ll be seeing them again. Of course if they ever put out another Soft Bulletin I reserve the right to change my mind. If you missed it, don’t worry because it was filmed for DVD release. Those guys really like to make money off their fans (multiple vinyl releases, limited edition cds, 5.1 dvd audio mixes, etc.).

Here’s what’s going on tonight:

The Clean Prophets @ Knitting Factory ($5) – Musically, I enjoyed their set last night at the Echo more than anything at the Bowl.

The Minders / Great Northern @ the Derby ($10) – Anglophiles and Elephant 6 members. Elliott Smith used to cover them too.

Darker My Love / Immaculate Machine @ Spaceland (Free) – Darker My Love continue their Monday night residency. Immaculate Machine features members of the New Pornographers (but not Carl Newman, Neko Case or Dan Bejar).

Jack Ingram @ the Whiskey – For the Texans. He’s on Toby Keith’s label and the All Music Guide claims he was influenced by Billy Ray Cyrus. I really doubt he was influenced by BRC.

The Ettes / The Oohlas @ the Echo (Free) – I haven’t heard either one of these bands.

Katie Melua @ the Troubadour ($15) – For the Norah Jones’ fans

Weekend Music Options

Here's a quick overview. I'll definitely be at the Bowl on Sunday. Muse was really good on Wednesday. As ridiculous as their new album is, they play their instruments well and rock.

Friday 7/21/06
Raconteurs / Kelley Stoltz @ Wiltern (Sold Out) – You already know that I was a little disappointed by the Raconteurs record but thought they were great live at the Fonda. Plus the Kelley Stoltz record is one of my favorite albums this year. I’ve seen him twice at the Echo and he seemed a bit put off by the experience both times.

Blake Sennet (of Rilo Kiley) / Jake Bellows (of Neva Dinova) @ Spaceland ($8)- Solo performances.

New York Dolls @ Tower Sunset 7:00 PM (Free) – I recently saw them at Spaceland. It was alright.

Saturday 7/22/06
Blue Cheer / Goblin Cock @ Key Club ($17) – I’m listening to Blue Cheer right now. Only one original member, but if you like Wolfmother and don’t know anything about these guys you should study more rock history. Who the hell put Goblin Cock on this bill? It’s just not right. And how’d they convince Rob Crow to leave San Diego during Comic-Con? Maybe he can’t stand the competition for biggest nerd in San Diego (and I mean that in the best way)?

Imperial Teen @ Knitting Factory ($12 adv / $14 dos) - mid 1990's rockers

Dabrye @ Spaceland ($12) – For the underground rap fans.

Slick Rick @ Viper Room – For the old school hip hop fans.

Giant Village (Downtown) – Paul Oakenfold, John Digweed, Deep Dish – this is not my scene.

Michael Hurley @ El Cid ($10) – A lot of music snobs seem to like him. He’s kind of a silly old hippie.

The Probe @ Mr. T’s – Straight up rock’n’roll

Sunday 7/23/06
The Flaming Lips / Os Mutantes / Thievery Corporation @ Hollywood Bowl (Sold Out) – The new Flaming Lips is probably the most disappointing record of the year so far. They’re on the border of becoming an all-schtick band (hell they’re even doing a show in Dallas with Matisyahu). I still like their back catalogue (particularly Soft Bulletin). Os Mutantes is a great psychedelic Brazilian band (check out their catalogue too). Rita’s not on tour with them, so that’s a little disappointing, but I’m still looking forward to it. Not sure how Thievery Corporation fits into the mix? They’ve got a live band, but I always think of their boring downtempo mixes.

The Clean Prophets @ the Echo (Free) – I posted about them earlier this week. They’ll probably go on pretty late, so even if you’re going to the Bowl you can probably catch them. The Echo’s always happening on Sunday night. Alan McGhee will be there as the guest DJ.

Gnarls Barkley @ Avalon (Sold Out) – I got some remix discs of the album that I’m enjoying much more than the album (because they bring Gorillaz, Outkast and others into the mix).

Mr. Lif / Cage @ Knitting Factory 7:00 PM ($17) – For the underground hip-hop fans.

Oneida / 400 Blows @ Spaceland ($8) – For the heavy, experimental rock fans.

The Clean Prophets

This video cracks me up. Tesh is so fierce.

If you haven't seen the Clean Prophets yet, check them out for free at Part Time Punks at the Echo on Sunday. I recommend them, particularly if you like bands like the Cure, Chameleons and Echo & the Bunnymen. Part Time Punks is always happening and Alan McGhee of Creation Records will be there as a guest DJ.

New Music Releases 7/18/06

I haven't heard any of this stuff although I'm curious about the Golden Smog and the Minders.

Cassavetes: Funny Story (Headphone Treats) – Download “My Heart Your Beat

Feist: Open Season (Interscope) – What’s the deal with all the remix albums?

French Kicks: Two Thousand (Star Time) - Appearing at the Troubadour on 8/21. Download "Also Ran"

Golden Smog: Another Fine Day (Lost Highway) – Gary Louris and Jeff Tweedy’s supergroup. They do a version of the Kinks’ “Strangers.”

Heather Duby: Heather Duby (Sonic Boom) - She just played Spaceland. I caught a song.

Helmet: Monochrome (Warcon) - I loved a couple of songs off of Meantime back in college. Haven't been too impressed since then.

Lisa Germano: In The Maybe World (Young God) - Appearing at Largo on 7/27.

Los Lonely Boys: Sacred (Sony) – Willie Nelson loves them. I saw them at the Austin City Limits fest one time and I had to leave – very quickly. Appearing at the Greek on 8/18.

The Minders: Bright Guilty World (Future Farmer) - Anglophile Elephant 6 band. Appearing at the Derby on 7/24.

MSTRKRFT: The Looks (Last Gang)

Neil Gaiman: Where's Neil When You Need Him? (Dancing Ferret) – A bunch of (mostly) artists I’ve never heard of write songs inspired by Neil Gaiman’s work.

Psalm One: The Death Of Frequent Flyer (Rhymesayers) – Female rapper from Chicago.

Scott H. Biram: Graveyard Shift (Bloodshot)

Various Artists: 80s Metal Tribute to Van Halen (Cleopatra) – A bunch of metal artists like Jani Lane, Mark Slaughter and Stephen Pearcy cover vintage Van Halen. Odd.

Various Artists: You, Me and Dupree (soundtrack) (Lakeshore) – “Funky Cold Medina,” “Bust a Move” and local dudes, the 88. How’d they sneak on there?

Live Music Options 7/17 - 7/20

Here's a quickie post. I'll try to supplement later with links, etc. I also saw Ray Davies last night and a little bit of the Upper Crust on Friday.

Monday 7/17/06
The Rakes @ the Troubadour (Sold Out) – They’re a British post-punk inspired band (with thick accents). I only got through about 1 ½ songs on their CD, but a lot of people seem to like them (they did sell out the Troubadour). It’s probably upbeat and fun in a live setting.

Nicolai Dunger @ the Echo ($8) – Swedish singer-songwriter with seven albums out. I’ve never been able to get into it, but it’s probably not that bad.

Darker My Love / Midnight Movies / Sky Parade @ Spaceland (FREE) – Darker My Love are a local band with a new album coming out on Dangerbird Records. They’re doing the Monday night residency this month. The album’s a little Jonestowny, but they rock a little harder live. Midnight Movies use to not have a bass player, but now they have a bass player. Sky Parade has some Jonestown connections and plays Church/Love and Rockets-inspired music.

Tuesday 7/18/06
Jana Hunter / Feathers / Entrance @ El Cid ($10) – This is the first night of the Arthur Magazine/Devendra Banhart curated festival. Jana Hunter and Feathers are in the freak folk terrain. Entrance is a little more blues inspired.

Bedroom Walls / Listing Ship @ Tangier ($8) – Bedroom Walls play “romanticore.”

Sea Wolf / Great Northern @ the Echo ($5) – You may know Alex Church (aka Sea Wolf) as the bass player from Irving. He’s got a strong backing band (last time I saw him he had Patrick Park, Dave Woody and Byron Reynolds in the band).

Merle Jagger @ Lava Lounge – They’re an instrumental country-rock band. They are also doing an in-store at Sea Level Records on Saturday at 4:00PM for free.

The Submarines / Army Navy @ Hotel Caf̩ РThe Submarines have a solid new album out on Nettwerk. Call and response, boy/girl lyrics about relationships. They sound a little like Stars.

Wednesday 7/19/06
Muse @ Greek Theatre ($35) – Their new album is ridiculously over-the-top, stadium rock. Accept that, and just sit back and enjoy it. They move from monster riffs, to Queen riffs to military riffs. It’s a political record for the masses. They’ve always been more of a live band for me anyway. For a trio, they get some massive sounds.

Camera Obscura @ the Troubadour (Sold Out) – People swear by this Scottish, indie pop band’s new record. I heard they were great at SXSW. They’re kind of the opposite of Muse.

The Church @ Henry Fonda ($25.50) – Australian band that’s back in vogue. I never got much beyond “Under the Milky Way,” but that was a good song.

Johnette Napolitano @ The Hotel Café – I liked a few tracks off of Concrete Blonde’s Bloodletting quite a bit, but I never dug too deep.

Pop Levi @ Safari Sam’s ($7) – The former bass player from Ladytron’s new band. I think most people like those girls from Ladytron.

Gus Black @ Largo – He’s a local singer-songwriter.

Thursday 7/20/06
The Raconteurs / Kelley Stoltz @ Wiltern (Sold Out) – I wrote an extended review of the Raconteurs show at the Fonda. They’re much better live than on album. If you have tickets, be sure to get there early and check out Kelley Stoltz. He put out one of my favorite albums of the year. Download Kelley Stoltz "The Sun Comes Through"

Nine Black Alps @ Spaceland ($12) – Not particularly original, but not a bad band. They’re from Manchester and my girlfriend thinks they’re a bunch of sexy dudes.

The Parson Redheads @ Silverlake Lounge ($7) – I still haven’t seen ‘em, but they’re one of the local bands I’ve been hearing great things about. They play Byrds-inspired rock.

The Movies @ the Derby ($5) - A lot of people I know consider The Movies the best local band...

Nobody & Mystic Chords of Memory / Subtitle @ El Cid ($10) – Mystic Chords is Chris Gunst from Beachwood Sparks and Nobody is an underground beatmaker. This is another Arthur Magazine/Devendra Banhart night.

Minor Canon @ the Echo (Free) – He played in Dntel with Jimmy Tamborello. This is his new band.

Thursday, July 13, 2006

Weekend Music Options

I still haven't reviewed Sonic Youth, The Rentals or The Lilys. Maybe tomorrow?

Friday 7/14/06
The Upper Crust @ Spaceland ($12) – They're a gimmick band that wears silly wigs and plays silly glam/metal riffs. Probably not for the thinking man, but it should be a fun way to spend Friday night.

The Good Listeners @ Tangier ($10) – Mellow Eno-inspired rockers.

Matt Costa / The Watson Twins @ Troubadour (Sold Out) – The Watson Twins are dang good with Jenny Lewis (and I hear their record is solid). Don’t know much about Matt Costa.

The Spores @ El Cid ($8) – New on the scene and playing quite frequently. They’ve got a record out now and they incorporate puppets into the show.

The Go-Go’s @ the Greek Theatre ($25-55) – Remember how dirty they used to be.

Appleseed Cast @ the Echo ($10) – Emo-ish indie rock from my college town.

Saturday 7/15/06
Parchman Farm / Danava @ Spaceland ($8) - San Francisco's Parchman Farm play pre-metal, blues rock and have a heavy Blue Cheer influence. If you're into Blue Cheer (or even Wolfmother) then check them out. Danava are on Kemado and were also on that solid Invaders comp that came out earlier this year.

Davie Allan & the Arrows / Insect Surfers @ Safari Sam’s ($10) - Davie Allan just put out a new record that celebrates California. The Insect Surfers are celebrating their anniversary (the claim to be the longest running surf band).

The Shakes / Kind Hearts & Coronets @ Mr. T’s Bowl (Free) - Hanging out in Highland Park can be a nice change of pace sometimes. The Shakes are on Jim Freek's Teenacide Records.

Sunday 7/16/06
Ray Davies @ the Wiltern ($32.50 - $42.50) - No way in hell I'm missing this show. The Kinks are my all time favorite band (if I had to pick only one) because Ray Davies is my all time favorite lyricist. If you don't own Village Green Preservation Society, Arthur and Something Else By the Kinks then pick them up immediately. The new solo record is solid (but a little slicker than I'd prefer). Reflects on New Orleans and facing mortality.

Drums & Tuba / The Vasco Era @ Spaceland - Drums & Tuba play rock music with tubas, drums and guitars. The Vasco Era are from Australia and seem to like the blues.

Greg Graffin @ the Troubadour ($12) – Yes this is the lead singer of Bad Religion. He's touring in support of the folk record he put out earlier this week (that I ignored). I loved a couple of those Bad Religion albums back in high school/early college (Suffer is my favorite).

New Releases 7/11/06

Most of these didn't live up to the hype for me. Maybe you disagree? I don't wanna stop anybody from buying the Sufjan, Thom Yorke and James Figurine. None of them are bad records at all. The Format caught me by surprise in a good way.....

The Adored: A New Language (V2) – Local band.

Cansei De Ser Sexy (CSS): Cansei De Ser Sexy (Sub Pop) – This is that new Brazilian band that Sub Pop signed. I haven’t heard it yet.

Cut Chemist: The Audience's Listening (Warner Bros.) – You know him from J5, Ozomatli and his work bootlegs with DJ Shadow. Anybody heard it? Appearing at Amoeba at 7:00 PM Tuesday.

Every Move a Picture: Heart=Weapon (V2) – San Francisco dancey rock band that I haven’t heard.

The Format: Dog Problems (Nettwerk) – This record came in the mail and I didn’t know anything about it or have any expectations. I saw Steven Mcdonald’s (Redd Kross) name on it as producer, so I put it on. It’s strong power-pop. I strongly recommend it for the power pop fans. I’m listening to it a lot more than the Muse, Sufjan, James Figurine or Thom Yorke. Appearing August 31 at the Avalon.

Hylozoists: La Fin du Monde (Boompa) – If you love Vibraphones and Tortoise, then you’ll probably appreciate this. I got it in the mail and it’s good instrumental background music.

James Figurine: Mistake, Mistake, Mistake, Mistake [cd] – Jimmy Tamborello’s new CD. I was excited about it before it came out, but I’m having a hard time getting through it. Who disagrees? I know some of you do.

Muse: Black Holes and Revelations – This CD is so ridiculously over-the-top it’s pretty hard to listen to. I’ll still be seeing them live at the Greek Theatre on 7/19.

Oneida: Happy New Year (Jagjaguwar) – Fans of Oneida are digging it. Other people are probably getting headaches from it.

Peaches: Impeach My Bush (XL) – Not my thing.

Ramblin' Jack Elliott: I Stand Alone (Anti) – Well respected by the indie community.

Soul Asylum: The Silver Lining (Sony) – Their first album since 1998. They’re appearing at Tower Sunset at 6:00PM on Tuesday and later that night at the Troubadour.

Sufjan Stevens: The Avalanche: Outtakes And Extras From The Illinois Album (Asthmatic Kitty) – There’s some good stuff on here, but I’m a little sick of the record and it feels a little like work to get through it. I’ll still see him at the Wiltern on October 9th.

Thom Yorke: The Eraser (XL) – Another record I was excited about until I heard it. Kinda like the last two Radiohead records but without any guitars.

Various Artists: The Pilgrim: A Celebration Of Kris Kristofferson (Emergent)

Live Music Options 7/10 - 7/13

I caught the Rentals on Friday at the Fonda and Sonic Youth on Saturday at the Little Radio Warehouse. I’ll try to write fuller reviews later this week.

Monday 7/10/06
The Lilys @ the Echo ($12) – Apparently the show is free after 10:00 PM but it starts at 7:00 PM. The Lilys started out as shoegazer band, then became a mid-to-late 1960’s British-inspired band (my favorite period) and lately play more psychedelic stuff. Apparently their most recent record was better than the one before it. I’ve seen them put on some really good shows and some shows where I wasn’t sure if the lead singer was even on the same planet.

Pearl Jam / Sonic Youth @ the Forum (Sold Out) – Sonic Youth was good this weekend at the Little Radio Warehouse.

Monsters are Waiting @ Troubadour (Free / $3 under 21) – Fresh off their monthly residency at Spaceland.

Darker My Love @ Spaceland (Free) – I only caught one song at their show last week, but it sounded much more rocking than their forthcoming record on Dangerbird Records.

LL Cool J @ House of Blues (Sold Out) – Anybody see Last Holiday? Me neither. I got a copy of the new record, listened to it once and forgot about.

Tuesday 7/11/06
The Sword @ Spaceland ($8 adv / $10 dos) – They’re my favorite of the new heavy bands (Wolfmother, Priestess, Early Man). Very tight live band and the record is worth picking up too.

Cut Chemist @ Amoeba 7:00 PM (Free) – You may know him from Ozomatli or Jurassic 5 or his work with DJ Shadow. Apparently he’s got a new record out with a lot of guest spots on it.

Bedroom Walls / Division Day @ El Cid ($8) – Bedroom Walls are a local band that plays “romanticore” and they got a really good rating from the All Music Guide. Division Day are the nicest guys around.

Gliss @ Viper Room (?) – Local guys.

Soul Asylum @ Troubadour ($20) – I liked these guys back in 1988. “Sometime to Return” was a great song.

Nickel Creek @ House of Blues ($25) – Bluegrass kids.

Wednesday 7/12/06
The Lilys @ Spaceland ($12) – If you miss them at the Echo on Monday….

Halou / Annie Stela @ Troubadour – Female KCRW style rock.

Vans Warped Tour @ Dodger Stadium – Helmet’s still a band.

Sonic Youth / Pearl Jam @ Henry Fonda Theatre (Sold Out) – I think you have to win tickets on KROQ.

Thursday 7/13/06
Matt Costa / Watson Twins @ Troubadour (Sold Out) – Also sold out on Friday. The Watson Twins help Jenny Lewis put on a great show and also put out quality music themselves...

Anya Marina @ Hotel Café – She’s well known in San Diego and playing the Hotel Café every Thursday in July. KCRW-style singer-songwriter.

Watkins Family Hour @ Largo ($10) – Two of the kids from Nickel Creek.

Belle & Sebastian / The Shins at the Hollywood Bowl

Two of my favorite bands at one of the best venues in the world (that's probably a little hyperbolic). Weeknight shows at the Bowl are a bit of a pain. I rushed over straight from work and still missed the beginning of the Shins set. They went on at about 7:35PM. They started out pretty shaky. They're not on tour right now and they've never been a great live band even when I've seen them in the middle of tours (I've seen them at Universal Amphitheatre, the Wiltern and some places in Austin). James Mercer seems painfully shy on stage. I saw him do a solo set at the Knitting Factory one night and he seemed much more comfortable in that setting. I'm not sure he opened his mouth once between songs. He lets Marty do all the talking. Marty loves to talk and he loves corny jokes. He made lots of jokes about caviar, fried chicken and thanking "mr. harmonic" for letting them play. They played at least two songs. The lyrics seemed good, but Mercer was off key from time to time. I'm always happy to see them and I'll buy the new record the second it comes out, but it probably wasn't the best venue for them. Naturally the crowd made the most noise for the Garden State songs (good songs, but 95% of their songs are good).

Belle and Sebastian came on stage about 9:00PM. With the huge orchestra behind them, they opened with a solo to set the stage for Stuart Murdoch's entrance. During the week, it never seems like the Bowl is loud enough for me. The band started off with mellow songs that used the LA Philharmonic to varying degrees. At times the vocals and the band were overwhelmed by the orchestra, but at other times it was a nice compliment. I haven't tracked down the setlist yet and I was too drunk on wine to bother (anybody have a link?) but it didn't seem like they chose a lot of my favorite stuff. Murdoch was engaging and personable as always and frequently interacted with the audience. At the begining of the show hardly anybody was moving (like the audience wasn't sure about the venue and the band wasn't sure this was their audience) but as the night progressed the vibe became noticeably better. During "Jonathan David" Murdoch brought a girl on stage to dance. She introduced herself as "baby beeyotch." At one point he asked the audience for a dress or mascara so he could get in the mood. By the encore the aisles were filled with kids dancing and people were rushing the stage (by this time the LA Phil had already left the stage). A friend pointed out that the energy and the crowd interaction reminded her a little of seeing the Smiths back in the day (and I had thought the same thing, but since I never saw the Smiths I was thinking Morrissey). Not the best Belle & Sebastian show I've ever seen, but both bands were clearly in awe of the venue and very appreciative of the audience. Overall a great time and one of those special nights that reminds you why you tolerate all the traffic and smog to live in LA.

Weekend Music Options

I’m really looking forward to B&S / The Shins tonight. I neglected to mention that the Clean Prophets are also playing tonight at Safari Sam’s. They’re really good too (but I’ll be at the Bowl).

Friday 7/7/06
Irving / The Rentals / Ozma @ Fonda Theatre ($18) – I already gave away a couple of sets of tickets. Matt Sharp’s a very talented guy (and the original bass player in Weezer) and The Rentals haven’t played in like a decade. Irving always puts on a high energy show.

The Little Ones / dios (malos) / The Submarines @ the Echo ($10 adv / $12 dos) – A couple of my favorite local bands. If you still haven’t picked up The Little Ones EP you’re missing out. Once they get signed it will probably go out of print and then you’ll have to buy it on Ebay for too much. Dios (malos) have a new drummer and they’re getting ready to record their third album. Both of their records are worth picking up too. The Submarines are a new band that kind of reminds me of the Stars. It’s a good listen too.

Legendary Pink Dots @ El Rey Theatre ($15) – The LA Weekly did a write-up.

8-Bit @ Mr. T’s Bowl (Free) – Quite possibly the most ridiculous band in LA.

Kids of Widney High @ Tangier ($10) – Perhaps you saw them in the Ringer? Or heard about them on Howard Stern’s show?

Year Future / Qui @ the Smell ($5) – Loud rock for the downtown rock scene.

Saturday 7/8/06
Sonic Youth @ Undisclosed Location (Sold Out) – You couldn’t buy tickets for this (they were given away at local indie record stores – but oddly they’re doing a signing at Tower?). I’m digging the new record. I hope it cools down a little. I got guilted into removing the location. I forgot it was a secret...

Petra Haden & the Sell Outs / Lavender Diamond @ Safari Sam’s ($12) – See her do the Who a cappella.

Quintron & Miss Pussy Cat @ Spaceland ($10) – Refer to the LA Weekly

The Lovemakers @ Troubadour ($10)

Sunday 7/9/06
Sonic Youth / Pearl Jam @ Forum (Sold Out) – Jeremy spoke in class today.

Quintron & Miss Pussy Cat @ the Echo ($10)- The LA Weekly seems to like them, go read what they have to say.

Early Man @ the Whiskey ($14) – I like Early Man and they were really good last time they played Spaceland. If you like Wolfmother, and this current wave of heavy bands influenced by good metal (Sabbath, Motorhead, Priest) then check them out. Tough to get out to the Whiskey though.

Mike Stinson @ the Echo 5:00 PM (Free) – My favorite local honky tonk singer.

The Probe @ the Scene ($5) – Heavy rock sans gimmicks.

Irving / The Rentals Ticket Giveaway

What are you guys doing next Friday (July 7th)? Anybody else wanna check out the Irving / The Rentals / Ozma show at the Henry Fonda Theatre? The first two people to email me at dukeufo [@] hotmail.com will get a set of tickets (they’re actual tickets and you must be able to pick them up in West Hollywood between 10am and 7pm sometime this week).

I don't have to tell you about Irving. They’re a local indie pop band that I’ve written about many times before. They write infectious pop songs and always put on an energetic live show. The Rentals are Matt Sharp’s band (the original bass player in Weezer). They haven’t played or put out a record in a long time, so anticipation is high. He’s a talented songwriter (and Weezer hasn’t been the same since he left). Hopefully he’ll break out tracks from Return of the Rentals and Seven More Minutes and some new tracks.

Email me and win these tickets……

Live Music Options 7/3 - 7/7

Once again Band of Horses was disappointing. They were better than when I saw them at King King, but the Echo was so crowded and it was hot in there. The lead singer seems really nice, but it's kinda lame that he forgot the words to one of his songs (they've only got one album) and they played the same song twice (I'll excuse the Pixies for doing it) and they destroyed a Hall and Oates song.

Monday 7/3/06
Darker My Love / Grimble Grumble @ Spaceland (Free) – Darker My Love have a record coming out on Dangerbird Records on August 22nd. To me it sounds a bit like the Brian Jonestown Massacre. I haven’t seen them live yet but they're supposed to be more rocking.

The Spores @ Viper Room ($10) - See the weekend write-up.

Tuesday 7/4/06
Kenny Loggins @ the Hollywood Bowl ($8-$145) - Fireworks and KL. Also on Monday.

God’s Gang @ Silverlake Lounge ($5) – Most clubs are closed so if you really have to see music, this is about your only choice.

Wednesday 7/5/06
Electric Eel Shock / The Grates @ Spaceland ($10) – Japan’s EES play fun, riff rock. The lyrics are funny and the energy is infectious. I’ve seen them a few times and never been disappointed. The Grates are from Australia, so see 'em before they go home.

Built to Spill @ Troubadour ($17.50) – They put on a great show on Saturday night. Opening with my favorite song, “Car,” they went on to play a two hour set of new songs and greatest hits. They ended with a 20 minute jam that I could have probably lived without, but overall it was fantastic. Some fans have complained that they played too many covers on the last tour, but they kept it original and tight this time around. And the sound at the Troubadour is so good.

Thursday 7/6/06
Belle & Sebastian / The Shins @ the Hollywood Bowl – This should be an incredible night of music. Two of my favorite bands together at one of the most iconic venues in the world. When are you going to get a chance to see Belle & Sebastian with the LA Philharmonic again? They put on the show of the year earlier this year at the Wiltern. The new Shins record has to be one of the most eagerly anticipated albums of the year. Can you believe it’s been three years since their last record? They’re hit or miss live, but hopefully they play some new songs.

Silversun Pickups @ Hammer Museum [10899 Wilshire Blvd] (Free) – Their new album is really good. It’s been in regular rotation since I got it last month. I’m already hearing it on Indie 103.1 so catch them before they go on a national tour later this month.

Dengue Fever @ Tangier ($10) – Cambodian psych pop.

Tilly & the Wall @ Troubadour ($12) – I heard the record’s good, but I haven’t heard it yet.

The Brokedown / Great Northern @ the Echo (Free) - These talented local guys are working on their first full length. Great Northern is kinda like Earlimart without Aaron.
