Highlights From Thursday's Calendar - 8/2/07

Buddy Plays the Hotel Cafe Tonight

Some solid free, outdoor entertainment tonight. If you can get out of the house early....
Tonight's Choices:
John Vanderslice @ LA River Basin – Sponsored by Aquarium Drunkard. Meet in front of the Los Feliz Café [3270 Los Feliz Blvd] at 7:00PM and walk down to the LA River. It would be pretty neat if this was all an elaborate hoax and the Aquarium Drunkard and JV were really serial killers who were taking everybody down to the river to kill them. I’m pretty sure they’re not.
The Minor Canon / The Section Quartet @ Pershing Square (Free Outdoor Show) – Starts at 8:00PM. The Minor Canon’s live album on Spaceland Recordings comes out soon. They put out one of my favorite local releases this year.
The Shys / Grand Ole Party / The Procession @ the Roxy ($10) – This is the second week of Filter Magazine’s new weekly party. Grand Ole Party’s about to head out on the road with Rilo Kiley.
Blair / Buddy @ Hotel Café ($8) – Blair’s a talented singer-songwriter from New Orleans. The Aquarium Drunkar’s hosting some tracks. He had her on his Little Radio show yesterday and is presenting a show with her at the Silverlake Lounge next Tuesday. Buddy’s a talented local singer-songwriter. Sinking with Sylvia’s has him on her show on Little Radio this morning. He describes his music as “wimpycore.” Which is pretty funny. She goes on at 7PM and he goes on at 8PM.
The Format / Limbeck @ House of Blues Anaheim
Lil Band O Gold @ Spaceland ($8) – Louisiana supergroup, swamp pop.
Thee LA Gentleman Callers @ the Scene – Matt and Paul from Qui play with these guys too.
