Slint Play the Fonda Tonight
Sonic Youth put on a great show at the Greek on Saturday night. They played Daydream Nation in its entirety and then Mark Ibold joined them on second bass for a five song encore, followed by a one song encore. I stood on Lee Ranaldo's side of the stage which gave me a great vantage point to see the guitar interplay between Ranaldo and Thurston Moore. Guitar sounds are everything to those guys. After each tune, Ranaldo handed off his guitar to the tech who retuned it. Ranaldo only ended up using about five or six of the 20 or so guitars at his disposal.
Tonight's Pick:
Slint / The Phantom Family Halo @ the Fonda ($23 / $33 after service charges) – Slint was one of my favorite bands in college. With its loud/quiet dynamics and lyrics that build from a whisper to a shout, their album Spiderland was extremely influential in the post-rock world. I saw them on their reunion tour in 2005 and they did not disappoint. I heard their recent show in New York was fantastic. Stream “Nosferatu Man
