Highlights from Friday's Live Calendar 9/7/07

OATES, OATES, OATES, OATES

Where I’ll Be:

Daryl Hall & John Oates / The Spinners @ Hollywood Bowl ($7-49) – This is where I’ll be tonight. Hall & Oates have a lot of great songs: “Rich Girl,” “You Make My Dreams,” “Kiss on My List,” “Maneater,” “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do),” “Private Eyes,” “She’s Gone.” They’ve been sampled by Kanye West, De La Soul, 2 Live Crew, Heavy D, Tony Yayo, Young Gun, and Young Geezy to name a few. Unfortunately Mr. Oates is sans moustache these days.

Quality Touring Indie Bands:

The Mother Hips / The Broken West / Let’s Go Sailing @ the Roxy ($15) – This is a good lineup. The Mother Hips play “California Soul.” The Broken West released my favorite local record of the year on Merge. Let’s Go Sailing are another local band that I talk about too much.

Joan as Police Woman / Emily Wells / Princeton @ Spaceland ($10) – Joan Wasser was romantically involved with Jeff Buckley, which is probably enough to make a lot of people curious about her. Her debut album has gotten great reviews.

Ben Kweller @ the Echo ($20) – The last night of his three night stand. He performs Ben
Kweller in its entirety

Kings of Leon / Black Rebel Motorcycle Club @ Greek Theatre ($40) – Southern rock and fuzzy rock.

Stereo Total / The Octopus Project @ El Rey ($15.50) – Download The Octopus Project’s “I Saw the Bright Shinies

Support Local Bands:

Quazaar and the Bamboozled / She’s Your Sister / Sumo @ El Cid ($7)

The Hectors / Repeater @ the Scene

The Monolators / The Front @ Mr. T’s Bowl (Free)

For the road trip Inclined:

Cracker Camper Van Beethoven Campout: Camper Van Beethoven / Magnolia Electric Co. / Watson Twins, etc.. @ Pappy and Harriet’s in Pioneertown
