Highlights from Thursday's Live Calendar 9/6/07

Lucinda Plays Essence at El Rey Tonight

Tonight's Pick:
Lucinda Williams @ El Rey ($35) – The second night of her five night LA stand. Tonight she performs her excellent release from 2001, Essence. It’s my second favorite record from her. They’re offering up live recordings of the shows immediately after the performances.
Other Very Good Options:

John Vanderslice / Bodies of Water / Bower Birds @ Troubadour ($14) – JV’s the talented, blogger adored singer-songwriter from San Francisco. Bodies of Water’s a local band getting a lot of national press right now. They play Danielson Famile meets Arcade Fire indie rock.

Magnolia Electric Co. / Secretary Bird @ the Echo ($12) – I’ve been a fan of the mellow, folk-country-ish music of Jason Molina since his days as Songs: Ohia.

Innaway / Stevenson Ranch Davidians @ Silverlake Lounge ($10) – Innaway’s a partially local band that doesn’t play enough shows around here. They’ve got a bit of an Echo & the Bunnymen influence.

Ben Kweller @ the Echo [Early Show] – Performing On My Way it its entirety. Somebody double booked the Echo again (guess neither one of these guys is deemed big enough to put downstairs in the Echoplex). This is an early show at 6:30PM. Most people in LA work at least until 7PM, so good luck with that.
Also Happening:

The Frames / Eleni Mandell @ the Fonda (Sold Out) – The Frames are having renewed success in the US after the lead singer starred in that well reviewed, art house film, Once.

Listening Party: Guilt By Association @ Broadway Bar 8:00PM – Listen to Petra Haden’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ (Journey Cover)”

Cracker Camper Van Beethoven Campout: David Lowery / Johnny Hickman @ Pappy and Harriet’s in Pioneertown ($15) – Decent excuse to drive out to Joshua Tree for the weekend.
