Adem / Bedroom Walls @ Tangier – Adem was in Fridge. I like his albums, but with their layered electronics, they’re the product of studio mastery. Has anybody seen him live before? Tangier’s probably a good place to see him. He’s been on tour with Badly Drawn Boy, so here’s a chance to see him solo.

Wednesday Night Music Options 3/28/07
The promise of seeing Paul Williams at the Roxy last night was too much. He was billed as a special guest as part of Donovan Leitch's show. The show was packed. Leitch came out in Hedwig attire and did a few songs from the show. I haven't seen the Hedwig film since it came out in the theater, but I thought he did a great job with it. Eventually they did some Phantom of the Paradise songs and Paul Williams joined them on stage for one song. He joked that he couldn't remember the lyrics to a 30 year old song, but the crowd loved him anyway. At one point a marching band invaded the crowd and went up on stage. For the grand finale, Dave Navarro appeared and played guitar on a Stooges song and a Bowie song. It was exactly the kind of bizarre entertainment you want on the Strip. Does anybody know what the cameras were doing with Paul? Is somebody filming a documentary?Tonight's Pick:
The Moon Upstairs / High Society @ Bordello ($7) - High Society is Jason Moore’s band. He’s got a rotating cast of musicians that includes Josh Schwartz, Kip Boardman and Mike Stinson. It’s basically a bunch of talented guys playing bluesy rock and country rock songs/covers. People like to get up and have a good time at the shows. The Moon Upstairs is a local band with a serious George Harrison influence. Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Hoodoo Gurus @ El Rey ($20) – I was a fan back in junior high. I haven’t heard their recent stuff.
Club NME: Datarock / Scanners / Lady Tigra @ Spaceland ($8) – This is a big show for the indie dance scene and Dim Mak. Scanners are a Dim Mak band from the UK. Their album was well received by the critics. Datarock has an electro dance album coming out in June on Nettwerk. They’re from Norway and played some well received shows at SXSW this year.
Low End Theory Club: Prince Paul / Tom Burbank @ Airliner ($8) – Prince Paul produced De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising and De La Soul is Dead. That’s serious cred. Anybody make it down to the Low End Theory Club? What’s the scene like?

Kaiser Chiefs: Yours Truly Angry Mob (Universal) – If you liked the first one you might like it. I’m not feeling it. Sylus panned it, Pitchfork half panned it and Mojo, Uncut and Q like it. See them at Coachella on 4/29.

Donovan Leitch / Paul Williams Perform songs from Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Phantom of the Paradise @ the Roxy ($21) – Several of my friends are really obsessed with Paul Williams right now. He wrote all those great songs for the Muppets as well as huge hits for Three Dog Night and the Carpenters. He’ll be performing some songs from the cult film soundtrack to Phantom of the Paradise tonight. Donovan Leitch will be doing some songs from a more recent rock ‘n’ roll opera, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. It promises to be an interesting night.
The Deadly Syndrome / The Happy Hollows / The Lights From Here @ Boardner’s ($8) – Radio Free Silver Lake’s one year anniversary. Joe’s a big supporter of local music at RFSL and he’s got his finger on the pulse. He does these Let’s Independent nights once a month. This time he’s got two really energetic bands (TDS and THH) and one instrumental (possibly Morricone-inspired?) band I haven’t heard yet. The Deadly Syndrome were/are one of my top local bands to watch out for in 2007. Since I put them on that list, they’ve signed with local label, Dim Mak. If you like Oh No! Oh My! and the Unicorns and stuff like that, check them out.

El-P Performs at the Troubadour TonightTonight's Picks:
El-P @ Troubadour ($18) – I just picked up that new El-P record. What I like about it is that it’s literate, but still hits hard. Jeff Weiss posted a much lengthier review today.
The Airborne Toxic Event / The Movies / The Monolators / Western States Motel @ the Echo (Free) – This is a very solid lineup. The Movies are one of my favorite LA bands. They’ve got a charismatic lead singer and a great sense of humor. Download “Rock in the Slingshot” Airborne Toxic Event has blown up so fast. Unlike way too many new bands, they’re not afraid of lyrical repetition and hooks. I’ve heard people compare them to the Killers and the Smiths. Download “Does This Mean You’re Moving On” (courtesy of Spin). Western States Motel is another relatively new local indie band with a growing fanbase. I haven't seen the Monolators yet, but their stuff on Myspace sounds pretty good.

Elvis Perkins / Let’s Go Sailing @ the Echo ($15) – I finally got Elvis Perkins new record. The first half is definitely intense. I’ve seen him open for the Pernice Brothers and My Morning Jacket this year, and he’s a compelling performer. As I mentioned yesterday, Let’s Go Sailing had two songs on Grey’s Anatomy last night and appeared live on Morning Becomes Eclectic yesterday. Bravo.

The Parson Red Heads @ The Unknown Theatre ($5) – The Parson Red Heads are one my favorite bands to see live in LA right now. They’re a whole lotta fun. The music’s along the lines of early Byrds and Beachwood Sparks. Although white jeans do make your junk look funny.
Birds of Avalon / Crime in Choir / Metalchicks @ Spaceland ($8) – I have a feeling I’m going to make it out to this show for a while tonight. I’m curious about Metalchicks (featuring Sugar from Buffalo Daughter and Yuka who has played with OOIOO and DMBQ). Download Bird of Avalon's "Set You Free" and "Bicentennial Baby" The band features two of the guys from The Cherry Valence. Crime in Choir is an instrumental prog band featuring original members of At the Drive In and the Fucking Champs.

Thursday Night Music Options 3/22/07
I hate to shit where I eat, but last night I went to check out Besnard Lakes, Dirty on Purpose and Helio Sequence at the new ExPlex (under the Echo). Besnard Lakes took the stage (maybe (9:45ish). Very powerful - high falsetto, guitar jamming. They sounded great - even better than their record. I was really getting into it. During the fourth song I see the sound guy approach the stage and hold up one finger. My friend turned to me, "One song left? how long have they been playing." As they finish this fourth song, the sound guy walks back to the soundboard and cranks up the Arcade Fire's new record. So much for that one song. Maybe a 25 minute set. Tops. As I drank my $9 Maker's Mark and Soda and thought about the $12 I'd paid to get in, I got a little annoyed. Keep in mind, Besnard is a touring band from Montreal on a big indie label, not some guys who hauled their equipment over from their practice space in Highland Park. Next up was Dirty On Purpose from Brooklyn. I wasn't that into what they were doing, but they definitely had a crowd there enjoying them. Without warning, after about their fifth song the Arcade Fire erupts through the PA again. The band was stunned "We were promised 45 minutes. How many more songs do we have?" Arcade Fire blaring. The band was like, "Sorry guys. I promise if you come see us in Costa Mesa tomorrow we'll play a full set." About 11:10 the Helio Sequence took the stage. I stuck around until about midnight and left. Not sure what was going on with the short set times (the same thing happened when I saw Kelley Stoltz upstairs), but I do know I'm about $42 poorer and only got to see the band I liked for 25 minutes. All three bands are playing the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa tonight. I highly recommend seeing the Besnard Lakes. For a similar perspective check out Little Radio's review HERE. I saw a few other blogger/writers there, including Jeff Weiss who apparently contributes to the LA Times now. Wonder what they thought of it all? Oh yeah, the ExPlex is pretty cool and it's got guys in the bathroom that watch you pee (and try to sell you gum). Hopefully the short set times was a one time situation.
Anybody else listen to Let’s Go Sailing on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic this morning? Very nice. You can watch it HERE. Also tune into Grey’s Anatomy tonight as two of their songs will be featured. Their debut album gets re-released next Tuesday.

Apples in Stereo / Page France / Headlights @ Spaceland ($15) – Great lineup for the indie pop fans. Apples in Stereo have their first album out in five years and I think it’s their best one yet. If you like all the new, manic indie pop bands, but aren’t familiar with Apples, do yourself a favor and see them tonight. Did you know Elijah Wood has a record label in the UK and Apples in Stereo is his first release? Me neither. Luke Paquin / Tobias Froberg @ Tangier ($10) – Is Tobias Froberg the next Swedish sensation? Alan McGee (Creation Records) apparently thinks so; he just signed him to his Poptones label. Go over to Froberg’s Myspace and listen to “God’s Highway” and tell me it doesn’t sound like Paul Simon. Luke Paquin is the guitarist in Hot Hot Heat. He’s doing the singer-songwriter thing around town. Anybody see him yet?
Hell Ya! Night: The Explorers Club @ the Echo (Free for 21+, $5 for the non-legals) – The Explorers Club does a ridiculously good of sounding like the Beach Boys. I’m really intrigued by them. If only I hadn’t stayed out until 1:30 last night…….

Wednesday Night Music Options 3/21/07
The Besnard Lakes Play the Echo TonightA plethora of options tonight.
Tonight's Pick:
The Helio Sequence / Dirty on Purpose / The Besnard Lakes @ the EXPLX ($12) – It’s been three years since the Portland dream rockers Helio Sequence put out their last record on Sub Pop. They’re only a duo, but they get a big sound, which makes them a lot of fun to watch live. Download the Helio Sequence’s “Blood Bleeds” and “Everyone Knows Everyone” Dirty on Purpose is a slightly shoegazey, more Yo La Tengo-inspired Brooklyn band who put out a good, but overlooked album last year. Download “Light Pollution” and “Mind Blindness” The Besnard Lakes is another new, very promising band from Montreal. I’m really enjoying their new Jagjaguwar-released CD. They get compared to a lot of disparate bands, but that’s mostly because unlike a lot of bands, they’re multi-dimensional. You have to spend some time with their album before you comprehend their nuances. I’ve said they’re like cross between Low and Band of Horses, but that’s probably bullshit too. I’m really enjoying them right now. Download “And You Lied To Me”

Club NME: Goldrush / Electric Soft Parade / The Explorers Club @ Spaceland – Goldrush and Electric Soft Parade are two interesting British bands on an excellent local label (Better Looking Records). Goldrush gets the Wilco, Flaming Lips comparisons. I hear a little Snow Patrol too (when Snow Patrol still rocked a bit). Their record comes out on April 10th and its good. Download Goldrush’s “Heaven’s My Destination” and “Every One Of Us” Electric Soft Parade rocks a little bit harder. The All Music Guide compares them to Doves and Elbow with a hair of Ben Folds. Download Electric Soft Parade’s “If That’s the Case, Then I Don’t Know” Explorers Club are a heavily Beach Boys-inspired band from South Carolina. Like unmistakably Beach Boys inspired. Seriously. I’m not screwing with you. Download “Forever” (not a cover of the great Beach Boys track) and “I Lost My Head”
Sondre Lerche @ El Rey ($24) – After that weird sidebar, Duper Sessions record, the indie pop singer from Norway returned to form with his latest. It’s a good record.

Greek Theatre Schedule 2007
The Greek Theatre is a fantastic outdoor LA venue. It's one of the rare venues where I seem to always have a great time. If you're on the fence about any of these bands, just buy the tickets.
Tickets are currently available through their Premier Club Membership program. You'll have to pay $12/ticket and you won't really know where the seats are going to be, but it's probably worth rolling the dice if you really want to see a show.

Bloc Party Plays Two Sold Out Shows at the Wiltern Tonight's Pick:
Bloc Party / Final Fantasy @ the Wiltern (Sold Out) – For the indie dance crowd. Bloc Party’s like a guilty pleasure for me. Their music’s upbeat and mostly fun with a political undercurrent. As All Music puts it, they’re “equally inspired by Sonic Youth, Joy Division, the Cure and Gang of Four.” They’re fun to see live too. Final Fantasy is Owen Pallett, a Canadian violinist and member of the Arcade Fire’s extended family. He makes critically acclaimed baroque pop.
British Hype:
Amy Winehouse @ the Roxy (Sold Out) – Critically acclaimed young British sensation and soulful, Motown revivalist.
The Horrors / The Airborne Toxic Event @ the Echo ($12) – This one’s not a free show. The Horrors are a gothy, poppy-punk band that’s not too far from the Cramps. Next Monday’s show at the Echo with Airborne Toxic Event will once again be free.
The Fratellis / The Pipettes @ Troubadour (Sold Out) – The Fratellis are a new Scottish buzz band. Pete Townshend just joined them onstage at SXSW for a version of “the Seeker.” Check it out here at SPIN. I would imagine a lot of people are going to this show to check out the Pipettes. Judging by the SXSW coverage, I’d say the Pipettes were all over Austin. They photograph really well because they’re three girls in polka dot dresses. They do the Phil Spector girl group thing, but in a seemingly kitschy way. Seems like it’s all in good fun.
Australian Hype:
Berko / Airbourne / Wolf and Cub / Jamie T @ Spaceland (Free) – If you’ve been looking for an excuse to hit Spaceland all month, this is the best of the free, Monday night lineups in March. Wolf and Cub is an Australian band on 4AD. They just played a bunch of shows at SXSW.

There’s live footage of Jethro Tull, Taj Majal, Marianne Faithful, John Lennon (with Eric Clapton and Keith Richards), Yoko Ono (ok, maybe this isn’t very cool, but its certainly annoying) and classic Brian Jones-era Stones performances. You even see Gram Parsons looking very wasted in the background.

The Zombies / Ian Hunter @ Henry Fonda ($45) – The last time I did a top 10 albums of all time list (on 10/31/05) the Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle was #8 on the list (I could only put one album per artist on the list, otherwise it probably would have been a little lower). It always puts a smile on my face when I hear it. Of course that record came out in 1968, so is it really worth seeing them in 2007? I’ve seen them twice. The first time I was elated to hear so many of my favorite songs performed live. The second time wasn’t as good. Seeing old dudes pump their fists in the air to Argent’s “Hold Your Head Up” and “God Gave Rock ‘n’ Roll To You” didn’t seem quite as cool. By all means, go see them if you haven’t caught them before and if you have, then you already know what you’re getting yourself into. Ian Hunter was the lead singer of Mott the Hoople.

Thursday Night Music Options 3/15/07
Unfortunately, I didn't make it out Dr. Dog last night. I'd love to hear how it was. The main reason I didn't get out, can be seen in the photo above. This is what happens when some piece of shit on a suicide mission gets wasted in the middle of the afternoon and plows his car through a parked car, over a curb, over a speed limit sign and into two businesses. Absolutely bananas. Luckily some good folks came down and generously boarded up the windows to hopefully help prevent any looting.
Almost everybody's out of town at SXSW. Unfortunately I haven't had time to do my guide to SXSW. If you're there, go eat at Rudy's Barbeque and Curra's Grill. You won't regret it. Hopefully I'll have time to do a post later today...

Tickets for the Hollywood Bowl are now on sale. You can’t buy to individual events yet, but you can make your own packages. Basically Ticketmaster will charge you a flat $20 order fee. Dr. Dog / Bobby Bare Jr. @ Troubdour ($12) – I’ve really only gotten into Dr. Dog in the last two weeks. I’ve always heard a lot of musicians I respect praise them, but I’d never heard their stuff (admittedly, Pitchfork’s hatred for the band didn’t help). Once again, Pitchfork is way wrong. These guys are damn good. If you’re into 1970s-era McCartney and classic pop-rock songwriting, give these guys a listen. Their new album, We All Belong came out on 2/27 on Park the Van Records and there are six or seven stellar tracks on it. It reminds me a little of Kelley Stoltz, who put out one my favorite albums last year. They appeared on Conan on Monday night. They seemed a little nervous, but seem like they’d be a lot of fun to see live. Download “Ain’t It Strange” and “Worst Trip”

New Release Tuesday 3/13/07
This week's not nearly as jam packed as last week or next week, but there's still a few things to get you out to the store.....
Top Five New Releases:
The Fratellis: Costello Music (Interscope) – New band from Scotland with a lot of hype behind them right now. They just won the Brit award for Britsh Breakthrough Act. Kevin Bronson at the LA Times gives the record props today. Their show at the Troubadour on 3/19 is already sold out.
Rosie Thomas: These Friends of Mine (Nettwerk) – Folky singer, Rosie Thomas moves from Sub Pop to Nettwerk for her new album. The album features a cover of R.E.M.’s “The One I Love” with Sufjan Stevens. She also does Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird.” Catch her tonight (3/13/07) with El Perro del Mar at the ExPlx (below the Echo).
Various Artists: Stax 50th Anniversary Celebration (Stax) – This is not a skimpy, rip-off collection. The two-disc set includes 50 songs from the classic soul, blues and R&B label and all for an MSRP of $20. The usual suspects are here: Booker T, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes as well as some more obscure artists. It’s a very well done introduction to the label. Recommended.
Amy Winehouse: Back to Black (Universal) – Can you say crossover? The British, tattooed soul singer is already getting major radio airplay. She’s edgy, yet sings well enough to appeal to sorority girls and hipsters. A bit of drinker, she’s all over the tabloids in England. There’s resurgence in Motown-influenced music right now. Some of it’s pretty subtle, but not with Winehouse. See her at the Roxy on 3/19 and/or Spaceland on 3/20. She just won the Brit Award for Best Female Solo Artist.
Neil Young: Live at Massey Hall (Reprise) – This looks like a much better value than the Live at the Fillmore East disc that recently came out. It’s an unreleased, pre-Harvest 1971 solo set mostly with just Neil and guitar (or piano). Two versions are available – CD only and CD/DVD combo (this time the DVD is the actual show, not just a DVD audio version of the show). I’ll definitely pick this up. See the trailer for the DVD HERE.

Ken Andrews: Secrets of the Lost Satellite (Dinosaur Fight) – The former lead singer of the band Failure. See him live at the Troubadour on 4/5.
Gilberto Gil: Gil Luminoso (DRG) – Just voice and guitar. Appearing at Royce Hall on 3/24.
James Morrison: Undiscovered – He just won the Brit award for Best Male Solo Artist. Catch him at the Roxy on 3/21 “You Give Me Something” (Video Stream)
Reissues:
The Buckaroos: Best of the Buckaroos (Sundazed) – Buck Owens and the Buckaroos defined the Bakersfield sound. Artists like Merle Haggard, Gram Parsons and Mike Stinson owe a lot to these country innovators.
The Electric Prunes: Just Good Old Rock ‘n’ Roll (Collectors Choice) – Not the same dudes who made the classic, “I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night).” This lineup was a bit more countrified.

The usual suspects are here: Booker T, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes as well as some more obscure artists. It’s a very well done introduction to the label. Recommended.
Amy Winehouse: Back to Black (Universal) – Can you say crossover? The British, tattooed soul singer is already getting major radio airplay. She’s edgy, yet sings well enough to appeal to sorority girls and hipsters. A bit of drinker, she’s all over the tabloids in England. There’s resurgence in Motown-influenced music right now. Some of it’s pretty subtle, but not with Winehouse. See her at the Roxy on 3/19 and/or Spaceland on 3/20. She just won the Brit Award for Best Female Solo Artist.
Neil Young: Live at Massey Hall (Reprise) – This looks like a much better value than the Live at the Fillmore East disc that recently came out. It’s an unreleased, pre-Harvest 1971 solo set mostly with just Neil and guitar (or piano). Two versions are available – CD only and CD/DVD combo (this time the DVD is the actual show, not just a DVD audio version of the show). I’ll definitely pick this up. See the trailer for the DVD HERE.

The Buckaroos: Best of the Buckaroos (Sundazed) – Buck Owens and the Buckaroos defined the Bakersfield sound. Artists like Merle Haggard, Gram Parsons and Mike Stinson owe a lot to these country innovators.
The Electric Prunes: Just Good Old Rock ‘n’ Roll (Collectors Choice) – Not the same dudes who made the classic, “I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night).” This lineup was a bit more countrified.
The Electric Prunes: Release of an Oath (Collectors Choice) – This lineup featured David Axelrod. This preceded Just Good Old Rock ’n’ Roll and is an example of early prog (but the whole album’s only 24 minutes long).

Tonight's Pick: El Perro del Mar / Rosie Thomas @ the Ex_Plx ($17) – El Perro del Mar is Swedish singer, Sarah Assbring (those Swedes with their crazy names). Critics adore her new album. Inevitably they all say she’s influenced by Burt Bacharach and Phil Spector. To me her voice sounds like a combination of Julee Cruise and Kate Bush, however the All Music Guide says it’s a combination of Jane Birkin and Neil Young. I don’t get the Neil Young? I think we can all agree that it’s pretty, melancholy music. Rosie Thomas has a new record out today. It features a duet with Sufjan Stevens on R.E.M.’s “The One I Love.” There’s also a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird.”
Other Options:
Diplo / Bonde do Role @ Safari Sam’s ($18) – For the indie dance party crowd. Bonde do Role are Brazilians in the same realm as CSS. Diplo produced that first M.I.A. record.

Monday Night Music Options 3/12/07
Austin's The Sword Play the Troubadour TonightI went out of town last weekend, so the only live music I saw was Greg Diaz in the lobby of my hotel. Anybody make it out to the Sebadoh or Menomena shows? Sorry I missed them. This is the week of SXSW, so a lot of prominent local bands have already left town, but there are plenty of buzz bands in town this week on their way to or from Austin.

The Sword / Priestbird / Year Long Disaster @ Troubadour ($12) – The Sword are in town to give you a little slice of Austin before you head to SXSW later this week. They put out one of my favorite heavy records last year. They play Black Sabbath-inspired heavy metal with just great riffs. It’s along the same lines as Wolfmother, but better. Priestbird used to be called Tarantula A.D. Year Long Disaster is a local band fronted by Daniel Davies (Dave Davies of the Kinks’ son).

Airborne Toxic Event / Foreign Born / Mezzanine Owls / Eagle and Talon / Peter Walker @ the Echo (Free) – Airborne Toxic Event is doing the Monday night residency at Echo this Month. Here’s a bill with some top quality local bands stripping out the electricity from their songs and playing acoustic. Some of these bands are pretty atmospheric, so you can see how their songs hold up. You can also see how attentive the Monday night crowd is.
Berko / Low vs. Diamond / Fionn Regan / Children Collide @ Spaceland (Free) – Berko’s doing the Monday night residency in March. Fionn Regan is an up ‘n’ coming Irish singer-songwriter along the lines of his touring mate, Damien Rice. He’s just stopping in LA for a couple of shows after his Australian tour and before he heads to Austin for SXSW. Download “Be Good or Be Gone” Low vs. Diamond are a local band that’s getting big in the UK. Menomena Play the Echo on SaturdaySaturday's Pick (3/10/07):
Menomena / Bon Savants / The Parson Red Heads @ the Echo ($10) – I just got turned on to Menomena last weekend while working at Sea Level. Some of the songs remind me a little of TV on the Radio. It’s interesting and experimental but not in the way that’s going to give you a headache. I’ll shut up now and let you download “Wet and Rusting” and hear for yourself. They’ve got great artwork too. It was designed by Craig Thompson who wrote that Blankets graphic novel. Check them out. Seriously. The Parson Red Heads are one of my favorite local live bands. They play 1960s inspired music in the same way the Beachwood Sparks used to play.

Thursday Night Music Options 3/8/07
Saturday Looks Good To Me Play Spaceland TonightI checked out Spaceland last night. Dandi Wind was on stage. Wow. That was some outfit and some performance. I'll leave it at that. The Young Knives finally resolved their visa issues and played a show. Unfortunately their energy was (understandably) a little muted. "We've been up for 24 straight hours. Sleep is for losers." They had a good sense of humor (the bass player's name is House of Lords) and were likeable guys. They've got a post-punk, Gang of Four influenced sound. They're headed to SXSW next week.

Wednesday Night Live Music Options 3/7/07

Club NME: The Young Knives / Dandi Wind @ Spaceland ($8) – Evidently their immigration problems continued, and they didn’t play their Safari Sam’s show last night. I got an email today that assures me they’re on a plane and they’ll be in town for this show tonight. I haven’t heard their record yet, but it has already gotten four star reviews from Mojo, NME, Q and Uncut. If you’re still kicking yourself for missing the Arctic Monkeys last year, you’ll probably want to show up tonight.

Qui / Big Business @ All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock ($5) – A couple of the best local noise/metal/punk rock bands. David Yow’s (Jesus Lizard) now a permanent member of Qui. Big Business is celebrating the release of their new album (out yesterday) on Hydra Head records.

New Release Tuesday 3/6/07
It's a big day at the record store. Top Five Most Interesting New Releases:
!!!: Myth Takes (Warp) – The dance-punk band is receiving strong reviews for their third album. Almost all critics agree that it’s a ton of fun and a great dance record, a few knock it down a notch for the actual songs. See them at Coachella on 4/28.
Air: Pocket Symphony (Astralwerks) – This one’s getting panned by a lot of critics, but I’m sure if you like the band, you’ll dig it. Nigel Godrich produced it and Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) contributes guest vocals.
Arcade Fire: Neon Bible (Merge) – This is one of the most eagerly anticipated indie albums of the year. Don’t worry, this is no sophomore slump. The dramatic music works well with the lyrical motifs. Win Butler tackles religion (Christ, the Antichrist, heaven, holy wars, and the Neon Bible metaphor), politics (war, choice, race), modern life (TV, technology, paranoia, celebrity, poverty) and mortality. If you liked Funeral, then you’ll like this one. There are a couple of tracks that you might skip over, but overall this is a great record. I fully expect it will be on my top 10 list at the end of the year. Unfortunately a manufacturing delay means the vinyl is delayed until the beginning of May. The artwork in the deluxe edition is pretty cool, but the music’s all the same. You’ll have to decide for yourself if it’s worth the extra money. See them at Coachella on 4/28. Letter Grade: A-
Albert Hammond Jr.: Yours to Keep (New Line) – Albert Hammond Jr. is one of the guitar players from the Strokes. His debut solo album makes a nice companion record to the Arcade Fire’s new album. As dark and heavy as that Arcade Fire album is, Hammond’s record is light and carefree. With its sunshiney songs and strummy guitars, this is a great soundtrack for this 75 degree day in Southern California. He even covers Guided by Voices (and sounds a lot like them) and Buddy Holly. Catch him in concert tonight at El Rey. Letter Grade: B
RJD2: The Third Hand (XL) – The former indie rapper goes indie pop on this record. The production is still interesting with lots of electronic beats and some inspiration from video games. I haven’t heard the whole thing yet. See him at the Henry Fonda on 5/14.

Antibalas: Security (Anti) – Afro-beat artists expand their sound with John McEntire (Tortoise) as their producer. See them at the Troubadour on 3/22.
Apostle of Hustle: National Anthem of Nowhere (Arts & Crafts) – Apostle of Hustle is Andrew Whiteman’s band. He’s the lead guitarist from Broken Social Scene. Members of Stars also contribute.
Big Business: Here Come the Waterworks (Hydra Head) – Big Business is a local hardcore/punk/metal band on a very respectable local label. It features former members of Karp and Murder City Devils. See them at the All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock on 3/7. Pitchfork gave this a very respectable 7.9/10 today.
Bright Eyes: Four Winds (Saddle Creek) – Pitchfork gave this a crappy rating today, but if you like a band who really gives a shit what a critic says. I’ve been planning on doing a warbliest voice in indie rock post for a really long time, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. I think Conor Oberst would be pretty high (along with the Win from the Arcade Fire, the guy from CYHSY and the Wolf Parade guy). See them live at El Rey on 3/7 and 3/8. Download “Four Winds” and “Tourist Trap”

The Stooges: The Weirdness (Virgin) – Their first album since 1973 with Mike Watt added on bass. Some critics are ripping some of the lyrics, but it’s still got Iggy’s trademark energy. See them at the Wiltern on 4/23
