Wednesday Night Live Picks - 10/11/06

Tonight's Pick:
Merle Haggard @ Royce Hall ($38-65) – Merle Haggard is a legend. He competes alongside George Jones, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash for my favorite male country artist of all time. I’ve seen him perform once (at Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace) and it exceeded all expectations. He didn’t resort to medleys or anything cheesy like that. He played a lot of classics and seems to know why people love him (which seems to elude a lot of older artists). I really wish he was playing somewhere other than Royce Hall because all those songs about drinking really make you wish you had a drink. Some favorite songs: “Mama Tried,” “Swinging Doors,” “The Bottle Let Me Down,” “I Take a Lot of Pride in What I Am,” “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink.” He’s also playing the San Manuel Casino tomorrow night.

Also Playing:
Cold War Kids / The Delta Spirit @ Spaceland ($10) – Should be packed. Cold War Kids are celebrating their album release (out yesterday on Downtown records – home of Gnarls Barkley and Art Brut). They’ve got great, loyal fans and they definitely deserve a wider audience. They’re in the process of going from a local band to a national band, so go see them at Spaceland while you still can. Before you dismiss them, see them live at least once. Download “Hospital Beds
Jesse Sykes / The Shore @ Silverlake Lounge ($10)
Kasabian / Mew @ Fonda (Sold Out) – I saw part of Kasabian’s set at Coachella once. They seemed tight and more interesting than their records. Mew’s album is pretty good. Should be a decent show.
The National @ Troubadour ($14)
