Friday Night Music Options 11/2/07

Yo La Tengo Play the Ivar Tonight

There really is something for everybody tonight. Even the hair metal dudes.
Friday 11/2/07:

Tivo Alert: Jay-Z on Letterman; Talib Kweli on Carson Daly

[Recommended for fans] Yo La Tengo @ Ivar Theatre ($26) – They’re billing this as part Storytellers, part Unplugged and part Chanukah show. It will be mostly acoustic and entail stories from their entire existence as a band but use their latest album as a springboard. Sounds like a good time for fans like me.
Download “Beanbag Chair” and “Pass the Hatchet, I Think I’m Goodkind

[Recommended – at the right price] Neil Young / Pegi Young @ Nokia Theatre LA Live ($45 - $257) – See my review of Tuesday’s show. It’s worth seeing if you can get reasonably priced tickets. For future reference, I would say that the Pit and the first few rows of the double lettered orchestra section are the best seats for the money. There were people sitting two rows behind me who paid $120 less per ticket.

[Recommended] Jon Brion @ Largo (good luck getting in)

[Recommended] The High Society / Junior League @ El Cid ($8) – If you like boogying to rock ‘n’ roll music.

The Polyphonic Spree / Rooney / The Redwalls @ The Fonda ($25) – I saw the Polyphonic Spree last time they played El Rey. Rooney is one of Jason Schwartman’s favorite bands.

The Bronx / Mercy Killers @ Safari Sam’s ($12) – Loud rock ‘n’ roll.

Redd Kross / The Willowz @ the Echoplex ($16) – Local legends, Redd Kross. I’ve seen them a couple of times and that’s probably enough for me.

Dax Riggs @ Spaceland ($12) – Of Deadboy and Elephantmen

Bobb Bruno @ the Smell ($5) – Bunny costume and noise.

Ferraby Lionheart @ Bordello ($10) – Local singer-songwriter.

Frankel / Correatown / The Monolators @ Mr. T’s Bowl – Nice lowkey, Eastside option.

Mezzanine Owls / Black Kites @ the Echo ($5 / $7 under 21) – I haven’t seen Mezzanine Owls in a while, but I hear they’re sounding great lately.

Bob Schneider @ Hotel CafĂ© (Sold Out) – This is an early show at 7:00PM

Low vs. Diamond / The Softlightes / Something for Rockets @ Viper Room ($12) – Low vs. Diamond was September’s Spaceland resident band and the Softlightes are November’s.

Dropkick Murphys @ Wiltern (Sold Out)

BulletBoys @ the Roxy ($15) – They’ll definitely play “Smooth Up in You” (which you can hear on their Myspace page).
