Recent New Music Releases 10/16/07 & 10/23/07
I'm way behind in trying to keep up with the new releases. Here are some recent weeks...
Top Five New Releases 10/16/07 and 10/23/07:
Can: Anthology 1968-1993 (Mute) – Worth picking up if you don’t have the albums.
Prefuse 73: Preparations (Warp) – It’s got a 65 on Metacritic which seems fair to me.
At the Troubadour on 12/9
[LOCAL] The Warlocks: Heavy Deavy Skull Lover (Tee Pee Records) – The Warlocks are back as a quartet.
At the Troubadour on 11/17
Ween: La Cucaracha (Rounder) – Apparently this is a return to their goofy, sniffing glue style of record. It’s got a 76 on Metacritic.
At the Wiltern on 11/8
Neil Young: Chrome Dreams II (Reprise) – This one’s very hit or miss. I was listening to it a log to get psyched up for his concert. Then he played some of the lamer tracks live and I probably won’t listen to it again for a long time. It’s got a 76 on Metacritic.
Other Interesting New Releases:
Ryan Adams: Follow the Lights EP (Lost Highway) – New and old songs. Two covers (Alice in Chains and Cardinals). He’ll be on Morning Becomes Eclectic on 11/9.
Babyshambles: Shotter’s Nation (Astralwerks) – Pete Doherty stayed out of jail long enough to make another record. I thought the Libertines had two or three decent tracks, but really don’t get it. It’s got a 67 on Metacritic.
Download “Delivery”
Black Dice: Load Blown (Paw Tracks) – Brooklyn experimental/noise/art rock band. It’s got a 73 on Metacritic. At the Echoplex on 11/13.
Download “Kokomo”
Castanets: In the Vines (Asthmatic Kitty) – Indie folk. It’s got a 76 on Metacritic.
Download “Sway” and “This Is the Early Game”
Extra Golden: Hera Ma Nono (Thrill Jockey) – It started out as a school project on Benga music. American/Kenyan collaboration. It’s got a 70 on Metacritic.
Download “Obama”
The Forms: The Forms (Rebel Group) – Steve Albini produced this one. At the Scene on 11/14.
Jesu: Lifeline EP (Hydra Head) – At the Echoplex on 11/9
Dave Gahan: Hourglass (Mute) – The Depeche Mode frontman. It’s got a 65 on Metacritic.
Holy Fuck: Holy Fuck (Young Turks)
Karate: 595 (Southern) – Posthumous live release.
Lazarus: Hawk Medicine (Temporary Residence)
Download “The Sky of the Tall Sun”
The Owls: Daughters and Suns (Magic Marker) – Indie pop.
Phosphorescent: Pride (Dead Oceans) – Ethereal folk
Download “A Picture of Our Torn Up Praise”
Robert Plant & Allison Krauss: Raising Sand (Rounder) – It’s got an 86 on Metacritic.
Randall of Nazareth: Randall of Nazareth (Drag City) – From Pearls and Brass
Download “Ballad of a Sorry Lonely Breaking Man”
R.E.M.: R.E.M. Live CD/DVD (Warner Bros.) – It’s got a 65 on Metacritic. They were my favorite band for a couple of years in high school, but never known for being a great live band.
Saturday Looks Good To Me: Fill Up the Room (K Records) – Indie pop.
At the Echo on 11/10
Download “Make a Plan”
Soft: Gone Faded (Academy Fight Song)
Download “Higher”
Sole: Sole and the Skywriter Band (Anticon)
Download “Shipwreckers”
Soulsavers: It’s Not How Far You Fall, It’s the Way You Land (Columbia) – Mark Lanegan guests on the downbeat electro record. At the Troubadour on 12/2.
Serj Tankian: Elect the Dead (Reprise) – It’s got a 70 on Metacritic. The lead singer of A System of a Down.
Tullycraft: Every Scene Needs a Center (Magic Marker)
[LOCAL] West Indian Girl: 4th and Wall (Milan Records)
Download “To Die in LA”
Dwight Yoakam: Dwight Sings Buck (New West) – I like Dwight Yoakam and I like Buck Owens.
Reissues/Greatest Hits:
The Besnard Lakes: Vol. 1 (Jagjaguwar) – I love the new one, but this one’s not quite the same.
Of Montreal: If He Is Protecting Our Nation, Who Is Protecting Big Oil, Our Children? (Polyvinyl)
At the Avalon on 11/8 and 11/9
