Cold War Kids Play the Wiltern on Friday
Happy Thanksgiving - stay home and play Rock Band or go see No Country for Old Men
Friday 11/23/07:
Cold War Kids / Richard Swift / We Barbarians @ Wiltern (Sold Out) – Silversun Pickups and Cold War Kids released their albums last year, but they both broke nationally in 2007. There was a time when I regularly saw CWK on random nights at Spaceland and in the small room at the Knitting Factory. At first I resisted them, but somewhere along the way I started to appreciate them. I even got into a bitchy email fight with an insecure, Midwestern, wannabe hipster (read: Pitchfork writer) about them. Anyway, like SSPU they’re now able to sell out the Wiltern. Opener Richard Swift put out one of my favorite releases this year. It’s just solid ass songwriting. The other opener, We Barbarians, are doing the Monday night residency at the Silverlake Lounge in January.
Download Richard Swift’s “Paisley Park” and “Kisses for the Misses”
Exitmusic / Adeline @ El Cid ($8) – Nice local lineup.
Artichoke @ Mr. T’s Bowl
White Out (with Nels Cline) / Alasdair Roberts / Charalambides @ Spaceland ($10) – Solid lineup.
TSOL / DI @ Echoplex ($18)
Circus Minor @ Bordello ($10)
Saturday 11/24/07:
Band of Horses / The Drones / Tyler Ramsey @ Avalon (Sold Out) – I must have seen Band of Horses three or four times when they toured for their first album. They got better each time, but they still don’t quite sound like their records. The lead singer seems like a nice enough “aw shucks” type of guy. The new record’s a little disappointing to me.
Download BoH’s “Is There a Ghost”
Why? / The Happy Hollows / Half Handed Cloud @ Spaceland ($10) – Why? Is a NoCal Anticon band. The Happy Hollows are one of the local bands to keep your eye on in 2008. They could be part of the next wave to break out of the LA scene. HHC is part of the Sufjan/Danielson indie Jesus mafia.
Download Half Handed Cloud “Feed Your Sheep a Burning Lamp”
White Magic / Luke Top @ the Echo ($10) – Drag City band.
Gram Rabbit @ Safari Sam’s (Free / $5 under 21) – Gram Rabbit recently did the Monday night Spaceland residency.
Aceyalone @ Viper Room
Sunday 11/25/07:
Rademacher / Karin Tatoyan / One Trick Pony @ All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock ($5 includes free shoe rental)
Reno In LA: Neil Hamburger / Abe Lincoln Story @ Spaceland ($8)
